What is missing from Ed? Well you.

Not gonna engage in accusing people of being DB's. Many people are complaining about Ed being boring and empty. To a certain extent this complaints are valid. But on another level I read far too little constructive critisism. This game is still in beta and they are working on it. So expecting a complete game is a bit childish. But on the other hand this is a time when game developers are most likely to hear us players out on things we would like to see. I am still learning all about things that there are to do in game and how to have fun. Piloting has become a bit easy unless I turn off assist which I do all the time but playing on an Xbox control is super frustrating. I have several threads going on things I would like to see added for each profession to make them more interesting in the long run.

To my surprise some of these are already there with the PP system. How can we as a community make things better? Well again constructive critisism. I am not a veteran elite player. I was shown this game by a friend and we both were amazed by the depth of the gameplay. Having to dock and looking around a ship is impressive immersion. After reading responses from several veteran players I realize one thing. We (new players) must be respectful of the past. Even if we want something different and evolving we must allow room for the veterans to not feel they are playing an entirely different game.

so what do we want from elite? That's the question w must agree on as a community.
Personally this is what I want in a nutshell.

-that my actions affect the universe and the community even in a small way.
-that I be able to support my friends and work towards mutual goals.
-to feel personally invested I my virtual cmdr. That that struggle to survive in space have weight. (Pilots dying and having to start over is a GREAT way to do this) perhaps as a pilot you could pass down to your decendants a portion of your amassed wealth thereby not loosing everything's)
-to be recognized for in some way for being a good cmdr. Wether that be rankings or something else anything.
-to be involved in a struggle larger than myself if I wish. (Can't wait for that alien race invading)

this is is what I want overall. I have a few suggestions for enhancing gameplay for individual professions but that is for the other threads.

Except for the iron mode of starting a new commander upon ship destruction this is already all present.

<grins> Do I detect a hint of sarcasm there? Either way, that's very noble of you!

To OP: FD have stated that ED is released and is feature complete so it is not in beta.

Lookie here:

The issue with the game is… In my experience, there’s always something more you want to do with the game. If you’re a perfectionist, it’s never perfect. But having said that, we released a game that was a complete game. That’s not to say that there wasn’t things we wanted to do with it, I’m still proud of the game we released. It worked as a holistic whole, and we’ve had a lot of people commenting who’ve played the game for more than a thousand hours. Saying, oh, they feel they’ve seen everything. And they probably have.

But they haven’t actually, they’ve seen everything that’s in at that point. We’re continuing to add more content. People say there isn’t enough variation in the missions. I’m inclined to agree and we’re increasing that variation. There’s some variation coming in the Wings update for example, and coming forward there will be in future ones as well, and the point is that we’re making it as good as we can and we’re making it better. We haven’t let go of it. We’re continuing to do that. As we go forward, we will keep doing that. Eventually we’ll bring in a big upgrade, a paid update, which we said we’d do right at the start, and then there would still be support for the game and free updates as well going forward from that.

The original Ironman proposal by FD had them in a mode of their own - no need for special paint-jobs, all would be Ironmen.

Oh see I'm playing on Xbox one so for me at least. Still in beta

As far as completeness of the game. I agree the game itself is largely complete. the story, the extent the developers are going to take it is not. My point is that the people complaining about the lack of features or lack of diversity don't often present well thought out solutions. And if they do it is often not in keeping with the traditional concept of the game.

I for one am trying to take a positive can do will do approach to the game.

People don't have to present a well though out solution, it's already there in the form of the dev diaries and the DDA. That's what many around here are waiting for FD to implement in full and have been waiting since december last year. It is true that most game features are present already (apart from a few things, passenger missions being an example, tier 2 NPCs another), but they are only in their most basic form. There is hardly any of the depth described in the DDA and the diaries. One of my personal pet peeves is the way the black market was supposed to "not be just another option in a menu" in the words of DB himself. You were supposed to have to work your way into the crime ring of a system before being allowed to deal with the local black markets... but instead, black markets are literally and ironically very much just another option in a menu. Another one I dearly miss is the way exploration was supposed to feed into the background simulation to cause minor factions to expand and fight over newly discovered resources. Still waiting for that as well.
Not all criticism around here is blind, although since december I suspect many people have grown tired of repeating the same stuff when asked why the hell they aren't completely in love with the game and why don't they go play WoW or CoD instead so have now taken to just adding to the ambient negativity.

There is plenty of constructive criticism around but it tends to get drowned out by the just plain bonkers. Like weeks of fervent discussion about whether the universe can be switched off because ive taken a mission and want to go to bed frinstance...

What is missing is not a lack of suggestions about what the game should include. Just look at the DDA - there is enough in there to keep them busy for most of the next ten years. The problem is the prioritisations that FD have chosen. Most of us would disagree with those priorities, unless FD happened to focus on our pet subject (never happened to me yet).

The game has been released some 9 months ago, it is certainly not "in beta". In addition, a beta test is done when the software is feature-complete. So afterwards, no more features are added to the product.

Therefore, we have a finished game and upcoming stuff are (paid) expansions.

Just to get the terminology right.

Further, it is unlikely that missing features, such as the single player offline mode, will be added in future.

That said, I really like this game and don't think much is missing, as I see it as a remake of the original Elite and Frontier.

BTW, I also fly with a gamepad. As the ships turn rather slow, I don't rely on the additional precision of a flightstick. The flight model is rather arcady and it does stay that way if you turn FA off. The flight computer will still mess with your thruster inputs, often in unintuitive ways.

He is an XBox player: to him it certainly IS in beta. He is not one of the 'whiners' who use that phrase to underline the fact that they do not think the game was at a state that was releasable when it was released. Whatever they think, DBOBE went out of his way to stress that what was released was a complete game.

My God Cody, are you a new Cmdr.? Two posts of more than (2) words. If so, have I permission to take over your 'mantle'?
