What is the point of the game? What is there to aim for?

What was there in Elite, Elite Frontier, etc. to "achieve"? Nothing really, but people still spent months on and off just relaxing, flying around and exploring in those games. Elite: Dangerous is no different, which is to be expected from a sequel. If you came to Elite: Dangerous expecting long quest chains, interesting dialogue, goals or achievements: look no further, since it's pointless to look for it in the first place.

No, the game is NOT in Beta. It works. It has all the features that where announced for release. There are some bugs but with that many lined of code and that complexity NO bugs are impossible.
Yes, there will come new features, but the game is finished and not in Beta and there are quite some people out there who enjoy it and for them it is worth every penny RIGHT NOW!

Well said!

You set your own goals, bro. I almost feel the same as you because as gamers this is something we are so accustomed to. But sometimes, you just need to learn to enjoy what you have and set your own objectives and goals. If it still doesn't suit you, then ED should be shelved for now.

You can also ask what's the point of life? After beating Grand Theft Auto 3-5, what's the "point" to continue playing?

I logged far more hours in open play than during the campaign... just driving around, fighting the cops, doing various stunts, whatever.

E: D to me is just GTA in space. A massive open world, one of the biggest, if not the biggest. Just fly around and in the crevices of stations, try some stunts, fight off authority vessels for as long as you can (Do this to the feds or alliance, HAIL THE EMPEROR)

Immersive as can be with the Oculus Rift. Graphics are beautiful.

It's already the perfect game in my eyes. Not everyone likes to play GTA for hours on end after the campaign. Lots of people need the campaign. If that's you, then the game just isn't for you at the moment. I think it'd be neat to see some more campaign-like features though, like of like working up to the clipper ... etc. We'll see.

Apparently you didn't download the babysitting mod that allows the game to tell you exactly what, when and where to do things in order to have fun.

Hello CMDR nats, be patient. ED is a new completely different concept of gameplay. Fdev will bring in more and more features. Think of it as a "modular" game. If you're getting bored, just take a break, follow the news and come back when there's a new feature to have fun with.

OP's wrong on all counts except trading.

It's not a 'deep' game. That would require gameplay innovation beyond the tech limits of 1984. Oh, and sand. There is no sand.

If you're not into grinding, I don't think you'll like Elite : Dangerous in it's current form.

I just read your sig for the first time and completely agree with all of it. Especially the NPC trading limitation.

I think this is the thing I find frustrating with Elite Dangerous:

What is the point of it all? There is no progression in the game, nothing to aim for.

  • You dont have enough ships to be aim for (certainly not from the Cobra) and there are so few ships that its a relatively linear progression which is dull, you have little if any choice of what your next ship is going to be.
  • There are no chained missions that I can see that lead you through the gameplay, they are all just individual one-offs that mean nothing. No story, no sweeping arc, no background - nothing.
  • Its so easy to make money trading and exploring and there is no real risk involved that it seems pointless trying to make money for the sake of it. Certainly you never feel very much at risk from meeting pirates like you did in Frontier/FFE - in those games meeting even one pirate was terrifying!
  • You cant bounty hunt to any degree because its all randomised stuff going on - you never feel like you are actually 'hunting' anything.
  • Trading is very much just grinding you dont have any real information to make sensible decisions and you cant see the market changing with any real intelligence.
  • And of course without being able to land on planets exploration is pretty dull and pointless.

So I think that is the issue. There is nothing bringing me back into the game, there is no direction or anything to aim for. There is absolutely nothing that makes me think I must get back into that game this evening to see what happens if I no this or to see where I go next. Its all the same there is no wonder or spectacle, even most of the stars look the same.

So this is the thing that needs addressing by Frontier: I want to be given a reason to play the game please guys. Been waiting now for two years to play this, let's please see it starting to 'happen' now.

I feel your pain, I feel like wise but , I think we must give FD just a little more time, I am also impatiently awaiting Wings, meaningful missions, things responding to your actions ect, ect.
We will just have to contain ourselves, play what we have got (or not) and HOPE this ships really launches and takes off.
I am sorry its all the consolation I can give, and its the stuff I say to myself
This game has enormous potential, it want happen in a month :)
+ Rep and think of queen and country when you play :D
Cheers Cmdr's

Frankly I don't think you will be happy with the game ever.

Elite is a great game right now, it just isn't a great mainstream game, it is a niche game and more a simulation and less a game in the traditional sense. That is something that most likely will not change because Frontier is following their vision and quite a lot of people have been waiting for such a niche game for some time.

the only problem is, there is no information from the Devs when and what we will have in the game like a "new features".

With this information i will be happy to come back later

Some people can drown in 3 inches of water. For others it takes an ocean.

People who love the game in its current state are the former. I, like the OP, thought it was great for the first 20 hours. Then I realized I was playing in a 1/10th full kiddy pool... And... Have yet to return.

Elite: dangerous, the game that could have been.

Seriously, not even wings. Not even chat! It is baffling.

This game has a lot of potential, it just isn't there at the moment. I understand people feeling a bit let down after paying 40 euros for this game cause it could have been 20 instead for what u got at release. I also understand the people that enjoy the content there is at a slow speed to make the game last longer or are satisfied with the current content due to having played the original game. (Yes it's a bit of a step up) though u should realize what expectation gamers have and what these current games need to live up too, I hope ED realizes this and more content will come and current lacking content will be updated. Shelfing a 40 euro game so soon is sad to say the least although an easy excuse for players that want to ignore the real facts.

Sounds like you are missing the point of Elite entirely so explaining would just be a waste of time.

Aye, when you boil any game down to it, the same questions of "What's the point?" can be leveled. The real question is, do you enjoy it? If you do, it's a game for you; if you don't, it's not the game for you. Same with everything in life! There are movies that are massively popular that bore me or worse, irritate me. There are movies that I love deeply that are generally disliked or unknown. And there are movies that are hugely popular that I love, and ones that are widely disliked or unknown that I don't like or don't know about :)

When we don't like something, we stop and go "What was the point of that!" When we do like something, we've no need to start trying to break it down - we just enjoy it. I guess if you are lead to ask "What is the point of...." then it instantly answers that it isn't for you. No amount of explanation will change your mind (which does, ultimately, make the question pointless to ask....)

Exactly. There is no scripted end game, that's sort of the point of Elite, always has been. What's the point to 'playng' FSX or playing a round of golf? None really other than for the enjoyment of the act itself.

Something to aim for can be any goal you set yourself. Do you read a book just to get to the end?
