What is the point of the game? What is there to aim for?

I think this is the thing I find frustrating with Elite Dangerous:

What is the point of it all? There is no progression in the game, nothing to aim for.

  • You dont have enough ships to be aim for (certainly not from the Cobra) and there are so few ships that its a relatively linear progression which is dull, you have little if any choice of what your next ship is going to be.
  • There are no chained missions that I can see that lead you through the gameplay, they are all just individual one-offs that mean nothing. No story, no sweeping arc, no background - nothing.
  • Its so easy to make money trading and exploring and there is no real risk involved that it seems pointless trying to make money for the sake of it. Certainly you never feel very much at risk from meeting pirates like you did in Frontier/FFE - in those games meeting even one pirate was terrifying!
  • You cant bounty hunt to any degree because its all randomised stuff going on - you never feel like you are actually 'hunting' anything.
  • Trading is very much just grinding you dont have any real information to make sensible decisions and you cant see the market changing with any real intelligence.
  • And of course without being able to land on planets exploration is pretty dull and pointless.

So I think that is the issue. There is nothing bringing me back into the game, there is no direction or anything to aim for. There is absolutely nothing that makes me think I must get back into that game this evening to see what happens if I no this or to see where I go next. Its all the same there is no wonder or spectacle, even most of the stars look the same.

So this is the thing that needs addressing by Frontier: I want to be given a reason to play the game please guys. Been waiting now for two years to play this, let's please see it starting to 'happen' now.

What about test the game and report a lot of bugs that they implement in the game

If you are the type of gamer in which the only fun you have is to be given a reward at every step in the game, then sorry, ED is not for you.

Just like everything in life, you find a reason to do things. I play to have fun. To explore the entire milky way, to test my skills against other players, to look at upgrading some parts to my ship if needed, to experiment with different builds and loadouts...

Like everything in life, you have to find your own way.

What's there to aim for, in my case, the rim. Followed by a trip around the edge and back to base, followed by a wander out into the hub. If we get something where we can show the route we took I might try my hand at drawing 3d wireframe bunnies.

To be frank I'm glad there's no progression treadmill, after years of having the Warack raid monkey on my back I'm more than happy to take things easy and vary my game according to my mood.

It's not a 'deep' game. That would require gameplay innovation beyond the tech limits of 1984. Oh, and sand. There is no sand.

If you're not into grinding, I don't think you'll like Elite : Dangerous in it's current form.

Well I would say those things are things you do whilst you play at the main game, they are not reasons for playing the game in themselves. I play plenrty of games that are sandboxes - but most of those provide lots of tools to play with and lots of new things to find/try/create. This game isnt just directionless its almost pointless as well, thats the problem. I just hope that starts changing real quick, two years is a long time to be still in testing/beta.

Elite won't hold your hand and force feed you with adventure......its simply not (and never has been) that sort of game.

You'll get out what you put in.

Its about immersion, role play, and clearly its not for everyone.

This video best explains what many people fail to grasp about Elite.

Don't worry if you don't "get it"....if you don't, simply get angry with the game and rant on the forum.

That seems to be the established convention.

The goal of Elite is to get to Elite rating. You can either do this through combat, trading or exploring.

The point for me is to enjoy myself in the closest recreation of our galaxy. There are various careers to dabble in but mainly it's about existing in this sandbox. It has re-ignited my passion for cosmology and allows me to do what I want. I don't want missions or badges or quests. I want to do what I want.

Elite is not a game where you can achieve anything. It is more like a simulation like X-Plane. It is NOT about the goal it is about the experiance.

The biggest issue for me is the missions are pants. They just don't grab you and you never really feel like you are getting anywhere, yes they increase in value once you become friendly and then allied but they don't increase in difficulty or change. It's always just the same "deliver this" or "go and fetch this" missions. You don't feel like the factions are actually giving you anything worthwhile, it's just a conveyor belt of the same mission re-jigged with different cargo.

What is the point of any "game"? To have fun..........in a computer game, that means gameplay......the flight feels good, docking feels good, fighting feels good, exploring feels good...it is "fun to do".........If you want to "win", you can win money from bounties, win ships through more credits, win rep for exploration, etc etc........

If by "content", do I want the game to center around a princess that needs rescuing, or an evil star lord that rules the galaxy, or some space key that needs to be found to open Wormhole X..............? No thanks........just give me a ship and a star to sail her by.............

No, the game is NOT in Beta. It works. It has all the features that where announced for release. There are some bugs but with that many lined of code and that complexity NO bugs are impossible.
Yes, there will come new features, but the game is finished and not in Beta and there are quite some people out there who enjoy it and for them it is worth every penny RIGHT NOW!

I've always thought people way overthink this. The point of the game is to become "Elite." That's it. That's the overall goal.

It's not about getting the top ship or owning space stations or anything like that. If you need a finish line for the game, it's to achieve the top rank as a pilot. To give you something more to shoot for, you can do it in one of three categories, or all of them. That's all there is.

Now, how you get there is up to you. What you do afterwards is up to you. It's whether or not you enjoy the mechanics of the game that determine if you want to put forth the effort, but that's the case with any game isn't it? :)
