What is your view on microtransactions for credits?

First serious answer from me...

Pay to win - anything where you can pay to get some actual advantage in the game - sucks as far as I'm concerned.

I would never play open ever again if that were to come to pass and if I felt it was cynical enough I would give up on Elite as painful as that is because it's been a long dream to be back in this universe.

It's why - even though I backed "the other game" - I've given up on that game: the cynical nature of the p2w from that vendor is, to me, beyond the pale.

I agree with the FD idea of allowing payment for cosmetic 'personalising' things and think having more of them might be a nice idea but as soon as you can give real money to get a better gun or ship or location I'm out.

I guess i should of said outside of kickstarer, Preorders rewards or Expansions ? I thought that was a given.

Heck yeah!! Then I can get that super-cruiser with all the max modules, and all the other stuff, thus winning the game. Oh wait, you guys are talking about Elite, not real life?! :D

Yep i was so excited for "that other game" until i saw the greedy nature of the company. I have played enough of those games to know its not something i want to play or support.
I am more then happy to support a company that works hard to produce new content and make the game better. I am not willing to support one that wants to sell me a ship for $100.

If somebody is willing to invest a lot of effort into such a meaningless task, I'd say give them an opportunity to increase their output by some paid items. I.E. "Major Government-change boost", increases your government-changing performance by 100% :) Here you go, cash to support the servers.
And there is the problem. Suddenly the game becomes a contest of who can put the most money into it, not the most in the game effort.

Always a bad idea IMO being able to exchange real cash for in game money, especially when the game requires no time to gain skills like EVE or WoW.
£100 for a fully kitted out A grade Anaconda anyone?

I knew I had read it somewhere, a quick Google mid post turned this up from the kickstarter Q&A's.

We do not plan to make it subscription-based. Once you have purchased the game up front, you will be able to play thereafter for no further cost. Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc. We will probably allow the supplemental purchase of Credits with real money, for those who want to accelerate their progress through the game.
We do plan to charge for additional updates, to be available sometime after the original release. These will offer additional content, features and gameplay.

Still, not a good idea.

I do not want credits to be purchasable by cash. I prefer cosmetic items that have no gameplay advantages.

1.) The game is often designed to be tedious and grindy to advance. Ways of gaining credits fast will always be nerfed as soon as spotted (trading supply, seeking luxuries, bulk trade tax, rare commodities, fines -> bounty trick, founder's world exploit).
2.) The game would then cost "real money" when you die, had you bought the ship with cash. This is never a good feeling.
3.) Again, in a game where you can buy credits to skip time: The devs have an incentive to make it take just enough time to make you want to pay money for it.

In my opinion cosmetic items are the way to go, not cash for credits. I for one will certainly not be a customer of cash for credits.
Thanks for reading!

As the majority of the people will argue that it doesn't matter what another person has in this game in respect to you, would it be fair to say that buying credits for real cash doesn't affect anyone at all?

There is no "win" in this game, hence it wouldn't be pay to win.

This does not appeal to me at all. My friends and I abandoned Lord of the Rings Online shortly after they introduced micro transactions. It just sucked the soul right out of the game. I would rather pay a monthly subscription.

Agreed

And when you think about it. Once you introduce something like that, the studio ends up relying on it, and therefore scaling things so that the PIYA (pain in your @$$) factor nudges you towards giving in and spending some cash.

It's like the Dark Side. Once you start down it, forever will it control your destiny ;)

I think cash-for-credits will be introduced once the RTE competition has been decided. As a mod has stated, the idea was mentioned by Mr Braben himself at one stage, so it's a definite possibility.

A possibility I'm not in favour of in the slightest.

I don't think it would add in a positive way to the game.
I wouldn't throw a fit over it if it happened though.

Nor were the vast majority of players in the DDF, alpha and premium beta in favor of it. As a result of discussions that took place during that time period FD chose to change direction and only offer cosmetic items for real-world cash, so rest easy.

All these vitriol filled posts of "If they do! Ill QUIT!"... You people saying this realize... They already have you're money, you can leave and it doesn't effect them one tiny teensy weensy little bit. BYE BYE! However, a cash shop would be a continuing amount of monies. Ton's of people would buy the game, and lots wouldn't hesitate to drop 20-50 bucks for a huge cash infusion to skip right out of that starter ship into something nice. It's a WIN WIN for Frontier all the way around, AND as people "Quit" that free's up server load so they don't have to expand their servers to pickup the additional load that might accumulate from new players.
