What other games are we all playing?

Let us know how it is. Its been hovering on my wishlist for some time, but the issues i've heard about it put me off a little.

So, spent a few hours in co-op in Deathwing Enhanced, so can give a little feedback. They fixed the performance issues it seems, so finally you can at least play it :p There's one new class that is fun, and a weird progression system for unlocks. It's better then the old one that's for sure. Also they added new xenos that make the lives of anyone melee living hell xD So for my group at least it was improvement enough to finally play the damned thing. I would say wait for a sale and give it a try, but it is nowhere near the polish of Vermintide gameplay wise. The aesthetics however.. I mean I was chuckling as I was reading the inscription on the power sword I was holding. These guys know what Space Hulk should look and sound like.. I just wish they would take some gameplay lessons, too.

Over the weekend I installed and started playing Borderlands 2 for the first time ever. I had bought it from a Humble Bundle quite some time ago but never got around to trying it until now. Very fun FPS game. I love the art style to it, and it feels like a Diablo game with guns.

LA Noire is an outstanding game, great detective story with an awesome atmosphere, I loved it.

It has it's moments - apart from that a city that isn't really alive. I've yet to see an open world game that features a good city emulation. Skyrim does a decent job, but that are more villages than cities.

I think all GTA games made their cities alive. In GTA V, the details are ridiculously well made. Also, I fondly remember when I first travelled to NYC, how much of it was recognizable in GTA IV.
In fact, it is a sad state of gaming that GTA V is already 5 year-old, yet I don't think anything came close of surpassing it - at least in my eyes, can be because of the setting. Yes, I love Elite, but the gaming world is just flooded with fantasy/sci-fi games, and I just love how R* realizes contemporary settings, or the Wild West in RDR.

Red Dead Redemption 2 might assume this mantle by the sounds of it :) Sounds like they're going all out on create a living breathing world...

Most immersive/alive cities I saw in games were Witcher 3/GTAV ons. I would add Assassin Creed ones too, I played only Black Flag and bit of the latest one tho.

I agree assassins creed deserves a shout out for believable alive cities.

I think the first mafia game deserves a shout out too.

Yup, I forgot about Mafia games, I recently started Mafia 3 and I truly enjoy the story and characters so far, and New Bordeaux feels great.

Yeah The Witcher 3 feels very alive.
I don't know about Black Flag, but the first AC had very obvious NPC patterns that didn't make any sense. At first glance it felt immersive, but following the NPCs revealed a lot of the tricks used by the devs. But I still think it was a decent achievement for the time. :)

It's not so much about good-looking cities or an underlyinhg traffic and daytime sim. It's more about the houses being mostly scenery backdrop. The one that has this realisticly looking door you want to enter to seek cover or flank and then it's just a texture.

Skyrim. Bought it a year ago, only played the first bit until you get to whiterun. Fired it up again, lightly modded, and am totally hooked.

Yeah I also like it when buildings aren't just empty sceneries. I would love games to let players open all doors in, say Witcher 3, The Division or Last of Us. But I do think the NPCs that are populating the cities need to serve purpose. This is why I'm very excited about Red Dead Redemption 2 as certain NPCs will actually build stuff like fences, and they will complete the build as well. :)

Anyone remembers Lure of the Temptress? That was one of the first games (if not the first) with NPC daily schedule, where they wandered around the village doing their own stuff.

Went far enough into it, but could never ever find a specific NPC that was supposed to wander around. Had to call it a day. That was in the pre-Internet era, so no multiple walkthroughs available, just a printed one in a gaming magazine which had probably forgotten something...

And as for NPC schedules, there was at least Ultima VII that came out a few months before. That has been my gold standard for ages, with NPCs already on schedules, sleeping, working, going to the tavern for lunch/dinner, passing orders to the waiter NPCs, waiters delivering food in front of customers, etc. It's still more advanced than 99% of games these days.

Well, had I known before Elite will be launched on consoles, I might have foregone upgrading my rig. Now I've passed the point of no return.

But missing out on RDR2 is painful. The first one was a masterpiece.
