What the new secret feature should be

Shouldn't we take a more realistic view?
Due to the introduction of PP2, there are many bugs and therefore the review of the new feature is postponed to 2025.

If the leaks are correct then base building has been in development, put on hold and resumed for a few years. The necessary tech could come from the Planet games. Also, base building could be monetized with lots of cosmetics for the exterior, interior, NPCs, creatures, vehicles.

I don't see much monetization potential for new planet types, EVA, explorable derelicts, fly through gas giants. Maybe as paid DLC which is a 1 time purchase. Cosmetics would be less relevant.
EVA as similar to ship interiors could be easilly customized. In case of derelicts - in this various case caches, toolsets and maybe you could turn some trophies into cosmetics/furniture. New planet types could bring species packs like Stellaris. Gas giants - well this one would be hard xD Most would work as an expansion or small DLC better though.

Actually today's Galnet story is a giveaway of base building. Actually at first I was thinking more about EVA and ship interiors that would make great gameplay, but I think at the moment choice is better as game needs to get more momentum and playerbase, then they could do a soft reboot with another expansion/do some investment into game engine. Also it will add more stuff to do on-foot, which is good as not much changed there since polish of Odyssey.

Basebuilding is a possibility, and the opportunity for Frontier to increase their ARX income by selling skins and decorations for the buildings. We'll find out in... 14 days.

Raises a question in my mind, how would base building be done in terms of the UI?

For a game where we are largely in first person view even when sitting at the controls, or using menus in our ship/helmet, how would the UI for base building fit? NMS style out of body third person with floating walls snapping together?

Hmm.

Still, I've no interest in bases so I'd never use it.
Probably like in a carrier view / ship outfitting.

I like survival mechanics there.
  • Temperature differences on airless celestial bodies slowly damage your infrastructure
  • you need to have certain amounts of oxygen, water, food, etc. at your warehouse (so you could have your own commodity store at last!)
  • crew element could be extended also along this and then retrofitted to large ships / carruer
  • also it may be used as a foundation to eventually terraforming planets and getting atmospheric planets
  • SRV battles! raiders, etc.
  • stashes, hideouts, etc.

If the feature is just setting up your own little arx customizable fort on some random landable body, I will be immeasurably disappointed.

I want to build systems. I want to head back to one of those systems I discovered that has the perfect assortment of bodies to develop an agriculture economy to facilitate trade with the mining economy systems other commanders are developing a few light years over. I want to terraform planets by importing 100s of thousands of tonnes of materials with my fleet carrier, or mining nearby high metal content bodies, or transferring water from the nearby water world. I want to secure my system from pirates that show up during boom times. I want to defend against occasional incursions by thargoids trying to gain a foothold on the ammonia world at the far edge of my system. I want to negotiate with galactic powers to bring much needed tech resources or military might to help my system thrive.

There is way too many cool possibilities to be satisfied with something as trivial "base building."

FDEV:This will be an exciting new addition to the core gameplay

Sounds like rather para-terraforming - i.e. biome under domes. To move an earth atmosphere worth of resources would take countless megaships jumping countless times...

I envision you could buy "licenses" - lands of plot on some planets/moons outside of the bubble - as a pioneer rush. This would push on exploration beyond 2% of galaxy.
I imagine it could be like that old Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman film Far and Away(?) where they have the race to lay claim to land patches :D

Everyone in their shiny new Mandalays charging off from the bubble and gankers galore in open!

Yes, but with our spiffy new map of our new understanding of thermodynamics, anything is possible!

Changing the orange HUD color should've been in-game years ago.
Changing it to say red or night vision green perhaps, the thing is that many colours would be unrealistic to such an extent that I'd really be disappointed if the game let you set them; bright lights in navigation cockpits are a massive no no in the dark, they completely ruin your night vision.

That would be an increase of over 200% on what has been discovered since the game launched.
