What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

"...for vertical/lateral thrust." - Just to confirm you can control this?

So you can thrust vertically and horizontally?

Yes, it's 6 DOF, i.e.

Axis 1: Pitch (up / down)
Axis 2: Yaw (left/right)
Axis 3: Roll
Axis 4: Strafe Up/Down
Axis 5: Strafe right/left
Axis 6: Forward/Back (throttle)

I've not seen anyone changing direction other than traditional Elite 1 & 3. ie: I've not seen anyone yawing.

The default controls are pitch+yaw, and on the mouse config, yaw is set to autotransition into roll pretty fast. So nobody with joytwiggles will yaw and many people with mouse will not yaw either.

At least as far as I know.. I'd kinda like to see a vid of someone expliticly controlling the ship with pitch+yaw.

The ideal controls for me look like this:

- Freelancer style "drag the nose" virtual joystick on the mouse. Pitch and yaw.
- WASD for vertical/lateral thrust.
- Q and E for roll.
- Target throttle on the scroll wheel.

You lose some fidelity on the keyboard controls, but with a proper "soft" sensitivity it can be almost as good. Basically if you have to hold the key down for a little bit to reach maximum roll thrust, it will be more precise.
Roll and laterals are not as important as pitch and yaw either so the lack of precision isn't so important.

You have full function and great precision with a layout like this. Unfortunately I don't know of many games implementing it. X3 I know. Ironically since I don't otherwise like X, at least the controls are good.

You pretty much referring to FPS controls like in "Space Conflict", especially the pitch/yaw part. You not supposed to be aiming with a mouse, that's the whole deal here.

Just to let people know - Controller and joystick have completely different sensitivity and feel. So yeah if you get used to controller you better stay with it, otherwise start playing with Joystick NOW, otherwise it will take some time to get used to controls. We have a good opportunity here to start getting used to joysticks early before game release. Its going to be a tough switch and time to get used to if you'll try to switch from one type of controls to another after game release.

Using pitch and roll for the mouse doesn't really make sense unless it's a Battlefield style flight model, which is inherently bad because you have to lift the mouse and keep dragging.

It makes much more sense to use a pointer for a mouse, and simply point at the direction you want to go. This means "dragging" the nose up or down, left or right, towards the pointer. Rolling isn't a direction.

A joystick is a steering device, a mouse is a pointing device. Respect the difference.

A mouse is also limited, so you need to defer the less important controls to the keyboard. The WASD cluster is easy to learn, and ergonomically positioned. Basically a left hand substitute for the arrow keys anyway. Up, down, left, right. Makes sense to map it to strafing. Q and E are handy to reach from this position also.
If it ain't broke why fix it?

So I've just tried the following controls and they work beautifully. I recommend trying them yourself before discarding. I realize we all have our preferences, I just found mine.

Note - whenever mouse is mentioned, I don't have to pick up the mouse, just move and hold and the nose follows, allows for very precise control, as I could imagine in a future space craft. This is actually more immersing for me, using both mouse and joystick. It's actually quite amazing.

The Joystick I'm using is a T.16000M on my left hand, even though I'm right handed.

Axis 1 - Pitch - Mouse
Axis 2 - Yaw - Mouse - yaw is slow, so you NEED to roll
Axis 3 - Roll - Twist on Joystick
Axis 4 - Strafe - vertical - up/down on joystick
Axis 5 - Strafe - horizontal - left/right on joystick
Axis 6 - Forwards / back (throttle), I would like to use the mouse wheel, but doesn't work, so I'm using the hat on the joystick, which works great.

Also I've got the trigger on the joystick to turn the flying aids on and off, careful of motion sickness with it off!!!

Such fun :) Have to say the sounds, graphics and small touches in Alpha are superb. Grats to all.

Thanks Shepard, this is useful to know ! Before getting a brand new PC to play E/D, i was a PS3 player, so i'm very used with controllers... but if you think the "Joystick experience" is better, maybe i'll try !
But i still hesitate a bit : MarcParis post on Youtube an interesting video, showing how playable (and apparently fun) the game is with a XBox controller !

The only thing i want to avoid is playing with keyboard and mouse.

Another quetsion : does anyone here tried to play with a PS3 or a PS4 controller ??? I wonder if it works...

I had one of those as my travel joystick (work away from home) had to get rid of it, the spring is too strong for accurate movement it gets very jerky, I'm going to stick to miss you xxx x52

UUUUGGGGHHHHH

there's nothing worse than yaw and roll being conflated into the same control, I seriously hope you can rebind this

Yeah, it's optional, it's just on by default for some of the control configuration sets. I was having real trouble with flight assist off flying until I realised I should disable this option.
