What type of controller will you be using for Elite Dangerous

See There is the other problem, If you say 'time to wake up' and decide to buy a joystick.:p
You then find that the Xbox controller looks like a mini keyboard with the buttons in the wrong place, and (like someone said earlier in this forum) not enough fingers.
so you plum for a flight stick (which makes sense on this game), but there are so many. And they range (again on the forum) from £25 to stupid mounts.
Also none of these offer the option to take it home and try it for a month or two before you try another and so on until you find the one that you can use and are happy with.:S

So instead of moving forward you stand still with your keyboard and mouse configuration.:(

It's not a hardcore flight sim, as someone has already said. The best thing you can do really is read or watch as many reviews as you can and then plump for a controller. Nearly every joystick out there is superior to mouse/keyboard for a game like Elite Dangerous.

Assuming that I have enough cash left over after buying into beta, I'd like to grab one of those 360 controllers that Microsoft makes specifically for computers. If not, I'll just muddle through with a keyboard/mouse scheme until I can.

Hi

just so you know you do not need the games for windows xbox controller.

you can either get the wireless dongle (cheap ebay knock off works fine) and use an xbox wireless pad, OR use a standard xbox wired controller which is identical to the GFW MS controller but with an xbox logo.

Now the XB1 is out you could maybe get a cheap deal on a pad 2nd hand if you are that strapped for cash.

Can anyone tell me about the Cyborg FLY 5? It ticks all my boxes but after watching a few video's it seems to have slow responses. Is anyone using it in the Alpha tests?

Hello Hadar;

i've just bought one (as well as the wired Xbox controller for Windows).. but my new PC is only coming tomorrow, and i need a few days to test both of them. But be sure i'll post here soon my impressions about the FLY5 !

I had a fly 5 it didn't do it for me, the build quality is great, there are copious buttons, however the spring strength was just too much for precise control, I bought an x52 a couple of years ago I'm going back to that now, but the fly 5 will be fine for most applications

I plan to use my Saitek X-52 and it's should be fine.
However, is someone knows something about TrackIR/FreeTrack support? It would be nice to have it in "Elite: Dangerous".

Sorry, maybe this issue already discussed here, but I cannot find anything about it.

diff controllers

I've used various controllers since starting the alpha, I have 3 sticks from diff manufactories and then of course the mouse( not a game pad fan personal preference is all). For those that are die hard mouse and keyboarders (fps gamers) the customization in options has a lot of choices to suite preferences.

Now as I like cockpit type games it feels natural to have stick and throttle, and then set the game to various programmables that suit comfort and at my age memory lol. Anyhow with the many differing sticks...x52 pro for the money is a good stick and a bit more stiff than the x52...still have the pro but sold the regular 52, the pro will need to calibrate occationally though because of drift. x-65 is a solid stick but takes getting used to and will have natural drift because it is pressure sensitive ie if your hand is on it, it will drift with pressure, lots of control functionality and can be set to use the 52 preference in the alpha

I have it and you can customize how sensitive it is to the touch as the stick itself doesn't move. throttle however does have its range of motion and a tensioner for its range of motion. I am currently using my warthog setup( wife will kill me if she ever sees the combined cost of all three) and it has its own challenges the target gui has to be active and a profile loaded before your virtual stick and throttle are usable, then most likely use a custom control setup as very light support for the warthog hotas at moment in game...and definitely not as a designated choice, hope that changes...

the Saitek including the 65 have the ability to roll with the twisting of the stick for rudder or a roll effect...however the 65 has a split throttle like the warthog system and you can set the roll to the left split of the throttle which works well to. the warthog has no z axis on the joystick so thaats how I set it on split throttle and based on best maneuvering of alpha ship it keeps my velocity side about mid ways anyhow so I get great response to...for the stock fans out there like myself

all 3 of these sticks mentioned should do beautifully for those on the fence...its more a matter of what you want to spend at that point...price point lowest to highest is x52, x52 pro, x65, warthog....the x55 coming will probably be under the 65 im thinking...side note 65 and warthog are heavy sticks and heavy duty both being of metal construct, also the warthog shouldn't be plagued by failing x,y pots as tm learned their lesson from the community that modded their earlier cougar with hall effect sensors and got the message...hall effect= no wearing out or close to it. they will last a good long while...check out the information for modded cougar systems from the sim sights and youll see they last. Hope this helps some.

Just opened a gift from Santa (my wife) and found a Thrustmaster T.16000M inside. Going to give it a quick try tomorrow if I find some time in the midst of the Christmas Day stuff! :)

I've been enjoying the alpha best with one of these.

It felt much more accessible and definitely more precise than my old Logitech 3d Extreme Pro. Mind you I've been well trained over the years on those PlayStation sticks.

I own a joystick, but the consensus of the Alpha is that it works best with a console controller. Might pick one up.

Really, all I hear from the Alpha is people banging on about how good the X52 PRO is or maybe the Thrustmaster 16000M or the Warthog. The general consensus seems to be that a good flight stick is better than a controller is better than mouse and keyboard.

Personally I'm using mouse and keyboard and finding it ok. Part of the trick is to increase the dead zone in the setup so it's not too twitchy.

Um, no. I started with a gamepad and it just does not give you the level of precision and control that you want.

Here's the same mission with gamepad and joystick (I give the controller name in the description):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlQJWD76CkQ

The latter video clearly shows better control that a "longer stick" gives you, I'd say.

The only trouble I had with the joystick was that it did not have a hat switch or the twist yaw (used buttons for yaw). Now, Santa brought me a Thrustmaster t.16000M and I'm looking forward to doing the same mission yet again with that (pending the end of Christmas celebrations and some practice with the new stick).

Some of its going to be preference, ie what your comfortable with, then functionality, another piece of the puzzle cost and affordability verses how much you are going to use it, then immersion level.

Personal preference is im in a cockpit I want a throttle and stick setup...asthetic and personal choice...Currently rigged with the warthog, but could decide to switch to my x65 or x52 pro...warthog doesn't use a z axis on stick like the other 2 do...and I reconfigured controls to have pitch and yaw on stick while on the throttle I have roll and throttle...with the warthog and x65 systems your throttle is split so can use one for rolling and other for throttle.

price point the warthog is at the top for dishing out the cash....awesome rig but for those that really are not concerned with the traditional flight controls...a game pad or mouse keyboard will work for you once you have it worked out to best suite you.

Now some of us have the warthog and many have the x52 series, but that is not to say that various other sticks at highly varying price points are not going to suite or fit what you would like, heck even flightstick series is still being produced and can be found along with logitechs hotas system although thiers may have gotten pulled or production stopped but the only system I know that is knewer and supported force feedback was the Logitech hotas...think it was 900 series but again I think they stopped making it not sure.

As to game pad controllers...I'm personally not so good with them and they take away the immersion for me so I don't use em...but that's personal pref.

at the end of the day its what we feel most effective with...and as the game reaches additional mile markers ...im sure we will be adjusting our mapped options to streamline our game play for even more personal touches

for me I'll probably try out the x65 on this game to just to see if I can get it all tweaked....warthog setup seems pretty easy at this point though and it just looks beautiful...and I was lucky enough not to have the wife see what I spent on it all or id be a dead reaper:cool:

Um, no. I started with a gamepad and it just does not give you the level of precision and control that you want.

you definitely seemed to have better control with the joystick, but can you say with confidence that it was because of the controller and not that you had already gone through the mission before and it was down to experience?

I have used Keyboard and mouse for so long that I am on the fence about making a break for joystick/pad.
Although the joypad just seems a little UN-natural in the position of the buttons or the amount of buttons vers a flight stick that are used in current flying vehicles.

I think the real selling point for me would be if someone videoed a keyboard and mouse battle.

or I just stop f*nnying about and just get one, lets be honest it isn't going to eat or drink anything:smilie:.

Then the second issue that no-one has mentioned, gone are the days when PC World (yuk) would display the joysticks and you can have a feel and a grope so to speak;)

Blimey Bikerix, was that under a pack of spangles and some tins of Long Life Pale Ale in the loft?
