What unconventional things have you done in ED?

It's all about blazing your own trail, so share some unusual ways that you blazed yours! ;)

Mine is pretty boring; my first cargo/trader build was a stripped down Federal Dropship. I was just going through the game casually at that point, and had not yet availed myself of all the community resources and recommendations. But it was fun, if repetitive... :)

I offered my NPC fighter pilot dental and health insurance to supplement her income. She seemed very surprised by the offer, so I have to assume it was pretty unconventional.

Oh, and I outfitted a T9 for laser mining, which is semi-unconventional based on reactions here in the forums when I asked some questions about outfitting it. I also didn't include core mining capability on it at all, because I don't want to core mine with it....which is definitely unconventional these days.

Supercruising between systems to see if I could or not and jump range testing, and after reading your OP, it reminds me that my generally prefering to go exploring in a combat loaded Vulture seems rather unusual. Oh well; their loss. ;) There was also that time through necessity that I found the route and minimum jump range needed to reach the Crab Nebula.

Cheers.

Can you? Supercruise between systems that is. I have had a notion to try it myself several time already, but haven't yet. Seems it would be much easier now with SCA, cause you wouldn't be as nervous about doing something like ...take a 4 hour nap...while enroute.

No, not the last couple of times I've tried. You can get to where the other system main star should be, but the instance doesn't change to it and you're still technically in the same system that you start from. So in this sense, each system in effect has an infinitely expanding void of space outward beyond the system itself. Jump ranges from system to system are also static, so even if you supercruise toward another system, you still have the same distance to jump to get there, minus the weight of fuel you use up before the jump, as it were – meaning your ship itself might be able to jump a little further.

Hehe, nice! I've been really thinking about using my Vulture for exploration with the new added slots, or maybe a Viper. ;)

My first core miner was a Dropship.
The FDS is a pretty good medium core miner, so not unconventional.
I flew a (pre-engineering) 18Ly T7 to Colonia.
That's not unconventional either, that's madness.

To the people saying "exploring in a Vulture/FAS/FGS etc..."
I have a feeling after every patch it becomes more viable to do this. More jumprange, more module slots.

Regarding topic: I have simply no idea. I don't think I did something really unconventional.
I tried to do PvP in a hulltank FDS once with fixed guns without having a clue of either fixed guns or hulltanks. Didn't went well, but it's not really unconventional.
Part of the Problem is I am veeeeery focused on flying optimized builds, so unconventional is not for me.

Yeah, in some respects I suppose. I've been using the ship for exploration since late 2015. It just depends what sort of exploration you're doing. Jump range doesn't really matter so much if you're just out there to be out there checking out systems and such. It comes in handy more for exploring on the fringes of the galaxy or trying to reach some destination in a shorter amount of time though. I've generally preferred the Vulture for its handling and survivability. Cheers.

Edit: Just checked and it seems I currently have 4 empty module slots on my Vulture. I'm running a lightweight variant of it though to make it out to Beagle Point on DW2. Honestly not sure what I'll find to bother putting in those extra size one module slots. It was nice using them for the ADS and DSS previously.

Heh. Similar bit of fun with me and a Python loaded with cargo for the Repair Jaques Station CG. Had it a bit easier on the return trek at least though.
That's what I was going for. By the time I got there it was months after the CG ended.
I haven't come back, instead bought a more conventional Asp Explorer and canabalised the T7, using Colonia as a base.

Hmm. unconventional... I got this ;)

  • Tissue sampling of Thargoids via cold ship builds
  • Helped out with initial solving Ram Tah 1 & 2 missions
  • Weeks of assassinations to create one of the first post 3.3 famines, part of decoding the BGS status bars
  • Tissue Sample bomber ;) (before it got nerfed)
  • Spent a year recording all the station repair totals
  • Helped write the paper that decoded the Thargoid attack patterns
  • 18 months decoding Eagle Eye most weeks
  • Currently curating the expedition to some systems that are unreachable by ship, first target HIP 4099 on Thursday :)

It's gotten a lot more conventional again with the recent discovery of overlapping Painite/LTD hotspots. Just yesterday I de-mothballed my mining T-10 for exactly that purpose.

I've done a few things I'd consider non standard...

Flown around the inners of a station with FAO.

Gone full criminal in a system with 9 noto to try and cripple a 50% controlling faction

Play boop the ship with friends

Gone and helped a couple of broken down pilots and refuel them

Traded imp slaves for 50 cigars for said engineer with a trading squadron/clan/guide

Yep, my Pink Laser Mining Space Cow agrees.

My first exploration trip was in a Viper. Couldn't afford an AspX back then so I just headed out into the black to see what all the fuss was about ... ended up doing a 5KLy round trip. Great fun !!

I'm now out scanning all 13700+ systems in a sub-sector near the core, hunting for ELWs, WWs and AWs. 60% done ... 😊
