What's with the mood shift?

I don't think accepting this as the journey we're on is the the best idea. I'd rather say (loudly) "This isn't cool, Frontier. What are you doing?"

As long as people remain reasonable..

Your comment makes more sense to me when:
  • You lost your entire franchise/progress when you played many hours
  • Can't open the game anymore after an update
  • Constant crashing of the game

But it doesn't make sense (and maybe disrepectful) when people also say this when:
  • The ambience speakers didn't work (very minor bug)
  • I reported my bug 2 weeks ago and it's not fixed yet
  • I wanted more features, where are they?
  • Why isn't my favorite animal in the game yet?

For some people paying € 50,- isn't that much of a deal. But some people have to save money for several months just to buy 1 game.

And it's really bad luck and very understandable when € 50,- is a lot of money for you and the game doesn't work at all.

No I don't agree with this. Frontier had a nice success story in JWE and they received an investment shortly after. If they can afford to build an entire new building to house their company then they can hire some QA staff to make sure the game is ready for gamers/their fans. Yet here we are, bugs and crashes.

Building a new HQ is a valid thing and has nothing to do with other expenses. But just look at their recent annual report at their website. They've sold 2 million copies of JWE within the first 7 months after release and net results sky rocketed if you are interested.

To be fair, most marketers these days just lie and manipulate.
That's all "marketing" is these days - hype up something that isn't as good as what the "marketing" makes out it is.

A good example is Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares - the "up next" bit at the end shows cut and shunt pieces of footage, but the actual programme is completely different and you see everything has been taken out of context or from different scenes entirely! All to build up hype - lies really.
Marketing has always been like that. ;)

Have you ever thought that perhaps if it's not a "bug" then the cost of food is simply way too expensive?

How would you justify $26,000 grade 1 food for pandas per feeding for 15 pandas? Honest question. How does a feeding use $26,000? Watermelons and bamboo are not that expensive. It's insane.

Perhaps the problem isn't a bug but rather terrible calculation into how much animal food really costs?

Watch the expenses report. Its a yearly cost.

Hello guys, it's been a month since I last participated in this forum. I wanna ask, is the community in this forum getting better or worse? Is there an increase of hostility amongst fellow users or no?

Really, what the mood is you can only decide for yourself, because everyone has a different level of acceptance. In my opinion, besides one or two users, the community is as friendly and welcoming to others as it used to be. The mood towards the game is mixed. Some people are understandably frustrated because bugs killed their save files. Some, like me, still believe in Frontier and look forward to the things to come, yet are open and freindly with critisism. Some are just here to bash the game.

A communityy ou can trust will always be mixed and hat's a good thing. I made friends here and rolled eyes, so I guess sometimes I am happy with the mood and sometimes annoyed. Nothing new.

I wasn't here for the beta or even for release. I'd pre-ordered the game, but not the beta part and didn't start playing until a few weeks after release despite getting it right away (had other things going on). The mood hasn't seemed that bad to me here though. This community has felt downright positive compared to reddit and the steam forums though once I did get into the thick of it. :)

Agreed. Haven't messed with steam, but reddit forums are usually more impersonal anyway for some reason. I think it's got a lot to do with the Frontier team. I know there are some that bash them, but even just a volunteer mod popping in for a second, or a new announcement with an exciting tone are more than you get from third party forums.

Reading this thread I can see the usual group dynamics in discussions for games, especially those in development or newly released. As one user said, it's normal for the negativty to subside over time and that is IMO mainly due to the so called 'haters' moving on. I'm glad to see a dev speaking out about the issue and would like to add my two cents. (Not being a navtive speaker please bear with my orthography and grammar.)

As a former developer I'm aware of the two extreme groups, either pounding the game and its studio or praising it to the skies. Neither group I think has got it right and both contribute to a very toxic community. I think it's best to keep it straight forward, honest and on topic.

That being said, I'm very happy about many aspects of the game. The art style is wonderful, as is the amount of detail that's to be found. The animations and behaviour of the animals is nothing short of amazing, sounds are great and performance seems acceptable. The degree of micro-management is a delight to those who enjoy the genre. However there are some aspects to the game that I find extremely frustrating. Take the following for example: Construct a barrier of 20m wall length with 90° angle snaps, forming a perfect square. It does not work. The last wall fails to complete, messaging 'Panel to long'. This does not make sense and begs the question, how did this this pass beta?

Another example is the quarter rounded, flat glass roof. There's only one and it needs to be rotated to fit either the left or right corner of a buildling. The issue is there is no left/right hand piece, resulting in the textures not lining up with the rest of the construction. Pathways behave in odd ways, seemigly dependant on the the order they're buiilt in. Sometimes they'll line up nicely with a (rounded) wall, sometimes they'll protrude on the outside. The same goes for some wall elements, such as the sloped roofs / walls that seem to snap on top of a given wall or clip it by different marigns.

The interaction of path building, construction and barriers is very finicky and often dictates the outcome of the build, instead of being able to build the project one would expect to achieve with the given elements. Furthermore, there seem to be objects missing one would normally expect. For example, there seems to be only one guest gate, it being a wooden one. Nothing to match the material used for the barrier, say glass or metal. The barrier walls can be lowered to 1m, which is wonderful - but no gate is half sized and they're set at 2m. These are not game breakers per se and just off the top of my head, but they do not live up to the the otherwise polished state of the game.

There are many more issues I could list, but I have no intention of turning this post is to a rant. Quite the contrary. It's the amazing detail and the sheer potential the game promises, that makes these matters, that appear half baked, incredibly frustrating. I've spent many hours reading in forums, asking other players and watching guides before posting here and really want to love this game, sink many hundred hours into it - but not finding workarounds and loosing my last hairs trying to get things to lineup, snap or match symetry.

The overall impression is that of a work of love, with dedicated developers that was cut short a tinge before perfection. Sadly the issues present make the game so frustrating to me, I quit playing until they're fixed.

Hopefully there are many fixes and addtions in the pipeline, as well as an active communtiy providing the tools that might ultimately not be included. (The Cities Skylines community is a good example in respect thereof.)

Thanks for listening.

It does work though...sometimes. I suspect terrain is a factor and skews things just enough with the settings regarding post height and whatnot to make it often fail. But, it does work, sometimes. Most of the time actually, if you keep trying with different angles of the mouse (i.e. you'll get the fail message a few times but can make it stick if you rotate the camera and come at it from a different angle).

Still more trouble than it's worth though, it's a lot easier just to use a barrier length that is less than 20m so it will work every single time.

Thank you for your reply. I've taken care to flatten the terrain and tried at multiple locations. It's the inconsistency, the fiddling you've described that I find so annoying. At this point I must add, I love the genre for 30+ years now, have worked with CAD and Autodesk products (which are somehwhat similar in functionality.) - the three axis movement tool for some objects is pure bliss. We're all humans, devs as players. I have my six year old sitting with me, watching me get annoyed at objects misbehaving, pathway placing glitching out and construction parts missing or not lining up well with other items. The game is so incredibly promsing, with potential to the brim. 'Somtimes' and 'Just use something else' hurts so much more then.

I'm sadly the type of person who will see when something is slightly askew, too long or short, and I can't un-see it. Today I tried placing an evenly spaced, symetric and sizable rectangular barrier within a set distance to a surrounding pathway. A seemingly simlpe task, but I gave up. Tried to pixel inch the first post in a corner, which seems to turn by 45° upon adding a second wall, preventing placement. Couldn't properly align the first wall with the pathway, so the second wall at 90° covering a distance of 40m++ would be ever so slightly askew it would also prevent placement. Tried building a smaller version inside the space, then scaling it up, thereby messing up the distrance between posts. I'll literally try for hours, watch tuts and ask for help before throwing in the towel.

I'm not giving up on this game, waiting for the kinks to be removed and some items and maybe tools to be added. It's simply too good to do so.

@monokoi, you make me glad that I find symmetry rather unattractive in a zoo layout so that I don't try to do any of that... I have OCD and one of the things I'm quite obsessed with irl is having everything aligned nicely, furniture that is not at right angles actually stresses me out, even in other people's homes. But for some reason, when laying out my zoos I like to use natural curves and make landscapes that look good and then follow the lines of the landscapes (which obviously means not symmetrical).

You're lucky. I much prefer using a grid to freeform, but with the current system it's basically impossible to get barriers straight. I mean don't get me wrong, it's nice that freeform is available - I just don't understand why something as basic as clipping a fence to the edge of a path is missing.

I did experiment with a complete grid layout once.

I laid out invisible barriers when I started the zoo, filling the entire available map with Octagons that were ...iirc...60 or 70m per side. Whatever size, it was the exact size octagon that a transformer in the dead center reached all of it. I then laid in my zoo, with desired staff buildings in the middle of each octagon and habitats around the outside with the Visitor paths following the sides of the octagons. Because octagons don't fit together to make a perfect grid, 4 sides out of each 8 sides per octagon were instead squares (which touched 4 different octagons). That's where I put guest services; restrooms and shops; and also exhibits and smaller habitats like nile monitors.

It was a fun experiment. :) To clip fences to paths. I laid the fences first and then use the path option to "snap path to barrier". Then I went back to editing the barrier and used the ability to select and drag a fence post anywhere I want it to tweak it, adding additional posts with the + symbol on the barriers if I needed to in order to get it just right. Hard not to get it perfectly aligned when you do it that way.

Urf, completely off topic though. I get chatty sometimes.

I'm aware of that option and it works, somewhat The trouble starts when doing this inside a building. I can only get two of three features (barriers/paths/construction) to play nicely, but not all three. Maybe I've got the workflow wrong, but I can't figure out how to lay down a barrier, attach a path and then construct the surrounding building so that all elements line up in a 'tight' build. Are there any guides available on how to accomplish this? (Sorry, going OT, will open new thread and include some videos.)

The way I would have made that is placed the path FIRST, path placement is blocked by barriers (the cause a lot of the errors) and they have quite a big area of effect, so generally I to terrain / paths / barriers. Then I would have put the barriers inside running along the barriers. Also you can fine tune barrier placement by selecting the post and then using the arrows to move it to whether you want it. You can also use this to move barriers out of the way if you want to work on the paths. 80% of the path issue I have are caused by barriers, so I just move them out of the way.

I am doing all sorts of crazy things with paths and scenery etc BUT I build very organically, so am not that bothered about being exact. Also most of my barriers are null, as i use terrain, and null barriers seem a bit more forgiving. Not sure I could cope with this game if I had even slightly OCD tendencies.
