Where do you draw the line? (in game behaviour)

I go by the motto of do unto others as you would have done unto yourself.
However, that person who attacked in Sag A. Low life scum of the universe. Hopefully karma gets him in a seriously big way.

It may take a little bit of role playing to feel compassion for slaves in the game. But if you treat the game as just bits and bytes to manipulate to "win" and you encounter someone who applies a bit of imagination to role play a pilot (even to a little extent), chances are that you will step on that someones toes at some point or the other.

:D S

Very true, and I see what you're saying, but I love it when the Bulletin Board says they're looking for slaves and I can just buy a couple from the same station and then sell them back instantly to the advertiser. To me, that's just instant, free cash, without the pondering of ethics. This, hopefully, will change in an update or two because, quite frankly, it doesn't make sense, but if I can make 30,000 cr while docked at a station then I'm going to go for it.

Dunno, I thought it was quite funny to be honest. At least they didn't have to make the return trip so, you know, every cloud!

No one forces explorers to go unarmed

If someone killed me at Sag A* I would make it my personal life goal to ruin their life. Preferably in-game.

That said I don't really draw the line for others where my own line is. I usually play games and RPG's like myself. Mostly a kind person, but revenge is allowed, sort of Rambo style ;)
But gotta allow others to be more themselves too. (and there are some really annoying people out there)

True. It's uncharted and unpoliced space so surely anything goes and that's a part of the risk of being out there.

But slaves aren't real though, surely? I mean, in game, it says they're slaves but they're just words and figures on a screen so surely they're in the same category as fish, but a valuable commodity. I oppose slave trading in real life but come on, it's still just a game.

Yes, it is just a game and how everyone decides to play is up to them individually. I choose to play my Commander with a philosophy that is in line with my real life philosophy. Naturally others will choose to play theirs as they see fit sometimes with a credo that is vastly different to the ones they live by. To each their own and such, your mileage may vary and there is nothing wrong with that.

There is no line when people blatantly exploit and call it fair play.

When they do stuff like...

Combat log
Submit jump
Frameshift shield charge
System jump to avoid mass lock
Wingman station trading hop tether exploit

What's the point? Why has the player population dropped significantly? Look no further than above.

I draw the line at bothering other players. If it's something that would upset me then i don't do it to someone else. Treat others how you'd like to be treated.

So glad I found this thread as I'm only a couple of thousand Ly away from reaching Sag A and have been playing in Open all that way thinking it would be relatively safe.
The thought of being killed once I get there after nearly a month's travel (I don't get to play that often) fills me with dread! Switching to Solo for the last leg might seem like an easy solution but I'm not losing all that scan data!

I do take any action that I am not willing to accept the consequences for.
I try my best not to be hypocritical.
I treat others in the same way I expect them to treat me: straight and fair.

Also, I do not exploit.

I feel these are things every decent human being should adhere to. I can see others having their own flavor of #3.

I guess he is Roleplaying and his Commander is anti Slavery.

Enemy commander in a CZ, fair game.
Any commander who attacks me or a companion, fair game.
Any pirate commander who interdicts me or a companion, fair game.
Any commander carrying a large (100,000 cr+) bounty, I will send a warning message before attacking.
Any commander on the opposing side in a CG, I will send a warning message before attacking (if attacking is appropriate for the CG).

Apart form the above, I save my aggressive behavior for the AIs. :)

It's an interesting question.

For me it's more or less as follows;

The only time I would initiate an unprovoked attack on someone would be in a combat zone. Even there I wouldn't jump in on someone that's gone red through an accidental fire incident and I wouldn't be part of a group attacking a single player unless that player had directly attacked me or someone in my wing.

If I were bounty hunting I would only go after heavy duty pirates or wanton ship killers - I wouldn't be interested in picking up bounties for some trivial non aggressive action that had gone from fine to bounty - I'd like a summary of what the offences were on a scan but that's probably not practical.

Outside of combat if anyone attacked me I would have no problem destroying their ship - if able - though if they were hopelessly outmatched I'd probably stop short of full destruction.

On the "moral" side I don't have any issues dealing with voluntary "slavery" (silly way to describe it) but I wouldn't deal with involuntary slavery - i.e. "proper" slavery.

I won't "pirate" players - mainly because reading the boards for 2 years plus now has shown me that many people really don't buy into that being pirated thing. That said I do a lot of trading and I have no objection to being pirated.

All I can think of at the moment..

New player here with EVE online background. In my opinion if it's not cheat, exploit etc and is ok as a game mechanic is fine. Everything else is just some artificial rules imposed by players and can be ignored, obeyed, laughed whatever you like, just have fun, in the end is just a game.

Be careful. FD have pointed out that some exploits are considered unacceptable (combat logging and ramming spring to mind), and will be monitoring players who use them. Continue to use them and there may be consequences.

1. I've only interdicted a non-Wanted player twice that I can recall: I interdicted my son once just to freak him out and one time I interdicted an EIC player in an Anaconda while I was in Sidewinder.
2. I don't think I'd attack a Wanted player if the bounty was anything less than 100,000cr and usually I know, going into the fight, that I'm probably going to end up as "space dust".
3. I don't deal in Slavery unless the intention is specifically to FREE them.
4. I don't intentionally attack other players in a conflict zone unless they attack first.

"Ramming" is not considered an exploit by FDev as far as I am aware. They are, reportedly, taking steps to make it harder to use in and around star ports but ramming will still be a valid combat tactic against an opponent in open space.

Like i said before i really hate exploits, cheats etc. They really spoils the fun of the game. Also logging was/is a frowned thing even in EVE and developers at some point fixed the problem of logging out in space with aggro.

I will draw my lines upon the situation.

However killing someone at Sag A* should make you the single most wanted player in the galaxy.

I seriously heard about this from someone I just randomly winged up with today.. Do we know this persons name? Do you have the low down? Also even if I went into the middle of nowhere I'd take a ship with big enough guns to defend myself.
