The game allows a wide scope for behaviour, and different modes allow people to play in the style they prefer. But most of us when it comes to player on player interaction have a line they will draw somewhere and say "No, i wouldn't do that".
Today was an eye opener for me with the occurence of the first kill of someone at Sag A*. Two reasons for this. I knew there were people around who kill without reason, but i never assumed any of them would have the dedicatation to fly to Sag A* to kill someone randomly, knowing full well the target would most likely be unarmed, not expecting it, and would lose potentially weeks or more worth of playtime (in this case, fortunately in a way, they were on a buckyball run and had completed their objective). The second reason was the support this action gained from a number of other players (thankfully a minority from what i could tell).
In other words, someone crossed a line that i personally would never cross.
Thread "rules"
Ok, i'm no mod, i can't set rules, but i'd like to set some anyway and hope people will stick to them.
1) Just state your stance on where the lines exist for you personally. Ideally, one post per person unless you have something valuable to add later.
2) No quoting other people's posts to argue with them about it. Be enraged quietly. Quote if you need to though.
3) For heaven's sake, no quoting dictionary definitions of things like "griefing". Few people agree on what the hell the term means anyway.
4) In fact, please steer clear of saying things like griefing and carebear and whatever else is likely to get people riled or might get the mods involved.
5) Please, no turning this into a solo/open discussion. Pretty please! With sugar on top!
Naturally we are assuming Open mode only here, although one example of where it might cross modes is for a person would be to join Mobius with the intent of killing people until they get booted from the group - because such people do exist.
Also of course, we are talking about things they you can get away with in game and do not break the T&Cs of the game. So even if you think its acceptable to use cheats, probably not a good idea to mention that here.
My line(s)
1) I'd never intentionally kill another player who wasn't wanted without a very good reason. Ideally an in-character reason as well.
2) I'll never pirate. I have just too much empaty to be a good pirate. I'd end up listening to their sob stories and feel bad for interdicting them in the first place and offer to escort them safely to their destination.
3) I'll never attack a new player in a startwinder.
4) Ill never initiate an attack against someone in an obviously vastly inferior ship unless its in a combat zone or under circumstances where there is a good in-game reason for me to attack them (powerplay could bring some interesting reasons here). If I am going to PvP, i will want a challenge. Attacking someone in a T6 when I am in an Orca, without good reason, is something i would find distateful. However, if they initiate combat, then all bets are off.
So, where are your lines?
