Where do you draw the line? (in game behaviour)

This is a fine attitude. But it's only because you are a moral and good person that you personally act this way. (tautology I know, but bear with..)

The game allows amoral behavior. So if you breed an expectation of good behavior in the verse for new commanders they are going to be so much more disappointed when they meet me in a bad mood. Their immersion (built on your fantasy) will be broken and they will feel as if they were grieved just because I blew them up.

Maybe consider that holding hands and singing kum-by-ya is a toxic philosophy in a game designed to be adversarial.

I disagree with your statement that the game is designed to be adversarial. Mr. Braben has stated in the early development that the game is supposed to be focused heavily on co-op play with elements of pvp. That pvp was supposed to be an occurrence that was both rare and meaningful (i.e. not too often but when it happens for good in game reasons). Having said that, you are correct in that his vision will be a very hard goal to achieve for the simple fact that there are people who enjoy nothing more than urinating on another persons leg and get off on that kind of thing.

My personal philosophy is do unto others as you would want others to do unto you. In other words, I personally would not enjoy somebody setting my game back for spurious or "reasons" so I will not do that to other people. I enjoy chat with other people and co-op play, but this notion that the game is all about the pew pew is a more alien concept to me than Thargoids would be if they actually were real and showed up on Mr. Brabens doorstep demanding royalties for their likeness being used in his game.

The red line for me would be exploiting, cheating and hacking. That behaviour is a scourge in online gaming but anything else goes as far as I am concerned. I'm not especially down with pwning total noobs in Eravate any longer. Whilst I have done it I was never really comfortable with it and its largely counter productive because it creates a negative feedback from new players and is far from awesome.

Not that we are able but I wouldn't camp one person for hours upon end. The game needs bandits so we can have heroes and with that brings an added dimension of political tension amongst players. From what I understand PP is going to provide many more meaningful ways for players to have adversarial experiences.

But hey, its a cut throat galaxy and jeopardy makes things a lot more interesting. ;)

I won't shoot at inferior ships if they are player-operated.
I won't carry slaves unless it's taking them to freedom.

I agree with your slavery comment, I will pick them up if they are floating in a resource zone or outside a station because whatever happens after they leave my hold is better than dead imo. I will not buy them to trade however as that is something I view as just wrong.

A thread back in September titled: School of Elite Combat Ethics was put out on the forums that to date, I have followed without fail. Pretty simple set of rules.

While I do accept that it is not everyone's cup of tea, I found it odd that only 7 (including the OP) signed on to them.

And yes, I do accept (and to some degree welcome) contrary play styles,,,,,,

Up to a point.

The "line" is an artificial constraint you put on yourself.

Your actions in game don't necessarily reflect your views and morals outside the game - Be who ever you want to be*

(Slaves & other illegal goods are definitely on the table to be used and abused for credits - it's not real life)

*Within the T&C / CoC of course.

I view Elite: Dangerous along the lines of a simulation, rather than a game. In that regard, I infer my ethics into the simulation.

Lines? Rules?

We have tools, not rules in ED. That's why I like it. It's open, free and everyone can choose to play the way they want at any given time, hence the "dangerous" part in the title. Personally, I play in a DK2 so, when I'm out and about in the void, I'm myself. I'm in the game (and so are you, even in Solo) and that's an amazing experience.

I love the fact that so many Commanders play so many different ways. It's the Galaxy's "juice".

I always had trouble with being a bad guy, be it in a single player game or a multi player one. But I don't judge those that are. In fact I welcome them, especially in Elite (knowing it doesn't say ANYTHING about your personalitiy in real life, a concept a lot of players don't seem to be able to grasp)
Too many people complaining about being shot for no reason. It's the risk you take venturing into Open; it makes it thrilling.
And let's get real, Open isn't even that dangerous. It doesn't take much effort to survive or escape an encounter.

Obviously lots of varying opinions as to what is acceptable within the confines of the game, and what is not.

For myself, for the most part, I behave in-game as I would out of game. When interacting with other people, whether it's face to face or virtually, there is a certain measure of decorum which I believe is required. It's not just another ship there, it's not just another dwarf/elf/whatever; there's another thinking, feeling person that you're dealing with. Just because you're not face to face with them, and because virtually you are mostly insulated from any retaliation should you upset them, that is no excuse to treat them any differently than you would any other person you deal with normally.

Within the confines of the game rules for confrontation with other players, whether it be blowing up other ships, or variable types of PvP which exist in other MMO's, or FPS's where the only objective is to shoot other players, I treat it as I would a sport. I play by the rules. I play fair. I play hard. Even if I am a terror on the battlefield (whether the case is or not may vary depending on game), I am a gentleman on or off of it. No insults. No hard feelings. No picking on the new guy who doesn't know how to pass the ball and misses every shot. Advice is freely given, if ever I have any. "Winning" is always the goal (definitions of which are variable and debatable so as such I won't go into them here, eg. defeating an opposing ship versus escaping from them), so no giving up if the odds are against you (eg. combat logging), but a victory is only worthwhile if accomplished by overcoming a struggle (ie. no picking on newbies, unarmed traders, etc.).

Some other real-life quirks which have crept into my gameplay: not only will I not trade in slaves of any sort, I also refuse to trade in legal drugs as well (alcohol, tobacco). Call me health-conscious or whatever.

Do I expect the same of others? No. I may hope for it, but as in the real world, you have to deal with all sorts of people. And regardless of how they may behave, it provides no excuse for me behave in kind.

I run lines somewhere between out of game understanding of people's time and effort put in vs my in game personality (which is fairly altruistic anyway.) Killing someone at Sag A is well within the rules and I'm sure someone may have a reason for doing it, but for me if I found out who it was and where they were I'd consider hunting them back into bankruptcy and a Sidewinder as justice. Exploration is a very different kettle of fish, so much time and effort that really isn't repeatable is put into it. I did the journey myself and meeting someone out there would've been awesome, but to get blown up after a whole month of travelling, scanning and sight seeing, plus losing 75m, would've left me gutted. The only justification would be if it was by someone else doing the Buckyball run not wanting their time beaten, in which case both players are kind of in on the RP and it's not like they'd have any detailed scan data, just jump boom and scoop. No excuse for a fellow explorer, the chance of following someone elses trail is miniscule at those distances.

I generally don't pirate but if/when I get the right ship I'd consider pirating slave traders and blowing them up even if they do drop all their canisters. Certainly with that community goal that had free the slaves vs get paid for them. Simply put, don't trade in slaves, my in game character finds it as abhorrent as I do.

I wouldn't kill sidewinder pilots unless they had a reasonable bounty showing they'd been up to no good. I would happily ruin the day of someone who did kill them though, repeatedly.

Station ramming is out of order, even if it is within the game mechanics it's still an abuse of them and could lead to ridiculously slow speed limits and everyone getting fined for going over 100.... boring... well done rammers, you've made docking a chore for the entire player base.

Station lurking however is fine, can be good for bounty hunters to get the jump, or particularly ballsy pirates. Obviously you have the risk firing in the no fire zone too.

Basically a lot of my lines are about karma, if I get the chance to deliver some bad karma back then I'd do it, possibly even over do it. This also includes combat loggers and the like. Then again I am friends with pirates too so I'm not hardline about the average decent pirate or anything and the social aspect of hanging out with them is more important than being "in character."

I may change some of my views when Powerplay comes out, if I find a faction I particularly dislike I may not think twice to blow up their ships, but I wont know until it's out and I'm in the moment. Generally try and be nice and help most people or just chat.

:D My ASP is fully decked out A rated for my 5 yr mission to explore str.... u know the score.. it also boasts armour, shield cells - 4 A class beams and 2 mulit cannons, missiles, chaff, flares... Good explorer with a big bark ^_^ ill be setting off soon and im going through Sag A. Hope hes still around when I pass through.

Don't cheat, don't use exploits, everything else is fair game. And avoid repeatedly screwing the same player over and over unless they're explicitely okay with it or there is some profit in doing so.

But slaves aren't real though, surely? I mean, in game, it says they're slaves but they're just words and figures on a screen so surely they're in the same category as fish, but a valuable commodity. I oppose slave trading in real life but come on, it's still just a game.

Imperial Slaves are there by choice and there is no social stigma attached to it. (Source - Perhaps not fully implemented but it gives you an idea as to the Lore and FD's thinking)

If you "free" Imperial Slaves that's an insult to the Empire and its citizens.

You are free to bring your human values into the game but it may not respect you for them.

It may take a little bit of role playing to feel compassion for slaves in the game. But if you treat the game as just bits and bytes to manipulate to "win" and you encounter someone who applies a bit of imagination to role play a pilot (even to a little extent), chances are that you will step on that someones toes at some point or the other.
