This is a fine attitude. But it's only because you are a moral and good person that you personally act this way. (tautology I know, but bear with..)
The game allows amoral behavior. So if you breed an expectation of good behavior in the verse for new commanders they are going to be so much more disappointed when they meet me in a bad mood. Their immersion (built on your fantasy) will be broken and they will feel as if they were grieved just because I blew them up.
Maybe consider that holding hands and singing kum-by-ya is a toxic philosophy in a game designed to be adversarial.
I disagree with your statement that the game is designed to be adversarial. Mr. Braben has stated in the early development that the game is supposed to be focused heavily on co-op play with elements of pvp. That pvp was supposed to be an occurrence that was both rare and meaningful (i.e. not too often but when it happens for good in game reasons). Having said that, you are correct in that his vision will be a very hard goal to achieve for the simple fact that there are people who enjoy nothing more than urinating on another persons leg and get off on that kind of thing.
My personal philosophy is do unto others as you would want others to do unto you. In other words, I personally would not enjoy somebody setting my game back for spurious or "reasons" so I will not do that to other people. I enjoy chat with other people and co-op play, but this notion that the game is all about the pew pew is a more alien concept to me than Thargoids would be if they actually were real and showed up on Mr. Brabens doorstep demanding royalties for their likeness being used in his game.
