Where do you draw the line? (in game behaviour)

In general: 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'

My main line is not attacking another player without a good reason (and personally i don't count 'just for fun' a good reason). Because this happened to me and it really, really ruined my day. I've been playing in a private group ever since because it just made me feel so bad (I will eventually come back to open, but not yet). Yes I know it's just a game and yes I know playing in open means stuff like this happens. But I think what hurt the most was knowing this guy (or gal) would easily get away with is, just pay a fine and off you toddle. If people want to role-play (or whatever) being a nasty character like this then that is up to them, but IMO there needs to be far FAR harsher penalties for acting this way. Hopefully some of this will come about in the powerplay update, we shall see.

My moral compass is easy. Never put up with a..holes. Never ever. This takes some efford and it is not the easy way always. Here it is easy. I never play open even though I might miss some content but one a..hole shooting me at Sag A would simply make me stop playing at all so I willingly decide not to get into such a situation.

I was in He Bo today, in a resource extraction site. I went there in my Cobra to practice combat against computer generated targets. Then I noticed a real player in a Vulture. So I just sat and watched because I hadn't seen one of these before. He was clean, and I had no bounty. But then he just rams me. I thought it might have been an accident, but I had a shield booster. Then he rams me again, and starts firing at me. I don't stand a chance so I make a break for it, and get away, although he is giving chase.

Anyway, CMDR Rol****, (if you are reading), that was so lame, and you can't even kill a Cobra even when you are in a Vulture! No, seriously, I'm not offended, or aggrieved, and that last sentence was meant in jest. But is there a bulletin board where players can set bounties on rogue players like this? Or is that counter to game equitette?

For me i see the people now targetting the explorers in SAG*A and shooting them up as being nothing more than.. what other aspect of Elite Dangerous can we totally screw around with today. The people who go that far out to shoot defenseless explorers have a real social problem. Explorers as your target ? If you want PvP there are places far closer to civ. space with pilots far.. FAR better than you likely are.. but then that is the point isn't it.. an explorer is just about your combat level.

There is nothing in the game where players can set bounties on others. But his action is one of the reason I never play in Open play. I actually saw this coming already in Beta so I never sat my foot in open since beta. Only way to get away from that kind of players is to play solo or join some private group.
If he wanted a dogfight he could sent you a text message if you are up for it but sadly in open that never happened. Open play is psychopathic heaven,,,

I find these sentences, especially in such proximity, to be quite a bit of irony.

Only a lunatic would do anything less than stack the odds in their favor as much as possible. A truly fair fight is nothing more than flipping a coin on your continued existence.

As an explorer you don't have to play in open. just go solo as you will not encounter anyone out there. But the thing some do in SAG just force players out of Open play.

What chat as there is no global chat? I assume the poster meant to set up a bounty on the bulletin board.

He was clean and the attacker was clean so whats the reason to attack? Just for the LoLs il guess. Or to boost their ego abit.

There is local chat. There is wing chat. There is direct chat to anyone you can name.

More than once word has passed from a friend of a friend of a friend to my ears, or someone closer by, about a CMDR so-and-so who was later chased off or shot down.

Could be any reason, or no reason.

The Vulture could have been trying to drive off perceived competition. The Vulture may have recognized the Cobra from elsewhere and had cause for enmity with this CMDR. Maybe he thought the Cobra was trailing him? Maybe the Cobra scanned him? Maybe he was just eager to shoot down a ship piloted by a CMDR? I couldn't say.

I'm sure I've shot down more than a few CMDRs in situations where it appeared I was attacking them at random, but I've never attacked anyone without reason.

Sorry for taking out part of your reply but,, This is the is the major reason. Just to shoot because it was a player. Iam glad you are not one of them that attack for no reason, or ram etc :D

PvP can be so much fun in a game but even in pvp there is "rules" or moral aspects,,, But if the cost of dying is so high it draws out the worst part of some players as they tend to do what ever they can to make the game miserable for others. But if dying to another player wouldn't matter that much it wouldn't be any problem. People would accept to be shoot at. I wish your progress would not be lost when you die by an players hand. No insurance cost. (or just a minor because you lost) No lost of explored systems since last save. But you loose your cargo.. But dying in this game can take you back to square one. ( just se that some players flew all way to Sag just to kill others,,, whats the point? )
Just think of it. I can compare other game where levels and gear is the progress. You reach level 100, have good gear,, You can "control" NPC combat and choose when and where. But then an player comes in and kill you when you least expect it and you loose everything and are back at level 1. I think that is a major reason why people don't enjoy pvp and open play. Oki its called Elite dangerous but in my view its just sadistic and don't encourage the game to be casual.

Only real strict rule(s) or standard I set for my self is:
1. Find my own RES site to rat in if one is occupied, especially if it's a player in a Winder or something of that sort. I don't really blow anyone up unless I am ratting in a site and they KS me, then I will kill them no mater what, the more bounties they have collected and subsequently lose at that point the better.
2. Don't attack defenseless ships like transport ships, only mess around with combat ships. My whole thing with pirating is that it makes next to no money. Interdicting someone and having them drop like 10% of their cargo nets you next to no money, you are just being a troll by doing that.
