Newcomer / Intro Whooooa!

I just did 16 jumps in the loaner with a fuel scoop! Feels good getting the fuel scoop down. This game keeps gettting funner and funner!!
Some guidelines. There's science and rules to everything in this game:
1. Set the mouse widget to "on" at the bottom of the mouse section in the keybindings, then, as you fly to/around the star, you'll see an orange/yellow line that marks the gravity. Keep the dot outside that at all times, otherwise you fall into the star and burn.
2. As you approach the star, keep an eye on your heat indicator. Move forward a bit at a time to see how it goes up the closer you get. You can stop and scoop all day long as long as you keep it below 65% (64% for basic Sidewinder). Once it goes over 65%, it will continue to rise until you burn unless you fly away.
3. You can reduce your ship's heat a lot and scoop for longer if you switch off in the modules panel all the modules you don't need for travelling. That includes shields, PD, weapons, limpet controllers, cargo hatch, docking computer, SRV and anything like that. You can switch them on again after your last jump. That can save a lot of time and give you a more relaxing ride on a long journey. Bear in mind the risk of interdictions if you're running missions or carrying cargo.
4. Never engage your FSD while the scoop is active or else you'll cook.
5. If ever you do fall into a star, which happens often when you fall asleep during a long trip, definitely switch off all modules except PP, FSD, sensors and life support before attempting to climb out, otherwise you burn even worse. That's assuming that you don't have heatsinks to cool you down.

Another thing on scooping.

When/if you get around to buying a bigger or different ship, some run cooler than others. For me, I've found the Dolphin, Phantom and Mandalay to be most bodacious. 'Course, these can be equipped with really decent scoops which do the job quite fast and cut down time you're gaining heat - although you should be able to find a sweet spot where you can just scoop and your heat remains constant. Take sunscreen though. For Justin.

Some ships will have sparks and damage happening all over the cockpit by just looking at a star but, even if you are seeing fires in the 'pit, your ship can stand quite a thrashing before the dreaded "Eject! Eject! Eject!" and you're looking glumly at the cost of your rebuy.
