Why Do You Own a Fleet Carrier?

My fleet carrier serves as the mobile fight ops base, obviously. It has about 10K tons of Tritium since I don't go all over the galaxy with it yet. I have about 20 ships on board. It has all of the functions I can fit. The weekly upkeep is about 27m Cr. It has a buffer of 28 years of upkeep. Obviously upkeep isn't an issue, nor is having enough Cr to do anything. For me, it feels more like I have a presence in the system other than being a visitor if my FC is there in the navigation panel.

What do you do with yours? Short of "anything I want" and the obvious role of storing ships, did you have a more specific activity in mind when you purchased a fleet carrier than having a mobile base of flight operations? I know some do some buying and selling, some do some exploring, some do some other things. What is your current FC activity and plans??

I use the secure storage to launder stolen goods, stock Thargoid nasties, and recently I've sold off most of my surplus of Odyssey materials.

And yes, it's a presence when you jump it into a system.. :)

And since it's a gold rush, I've helped an alt to haul large amounts of gold over large distances.

I have 3 carriers in Live.
My Main acquired his first carrier after Colonia Bridge phase 1, now replaced by another following transfer from console. As a wandering trader it freed me from attachment to any specific system and expanded my ability to haul commodities many times over.
During Thargoid incursions it allowed me to participate in multiple aspects with rescue ships to evacuate civilians from burning stations, AX ships to fight off the Thargoids and cargo space to help restore the damaged stations.
The first alt to gain a carrier did so as they were gaining autonomy from my Main having been housed aboard the Main's carrier. As they had interests in different directions it became clear she needed her own carrier rather than being dragged around by my Main.
The exploration alt gained a carrier just before the transfer from console. This allowed me to boost the mats available to my Main once they transferred and swapping mats between accounts rapidly developed my Odyssey kit.
Following this the exploration carrier was fitted for the black so freeing the alt from needing to return to the Bubble.

What do you mean "swapping mats"? Are you referring to engineering materials (seemingly impossible to transfer) or haulage?

Because I have more credits than I can spend.

To facilitate giving things to my squadron mates.

To serve as a mobile base.

To help new players.

To store my shtuff for use later.

Just to name a few.

i use mine to skip loading screens every now and then... that's about it. haven't really seen much of any other function it has worth using it for.

hoping the thargoid war destroys a bunch of stations and makes carriers relevant for that role.

I was on a trip as a passenger on a friends carrier, we went out to the very edge of the galactic rim beyond where I'd been able to reach in my own ship. I had never considered a carrier necessary before that, we were doing something that could only be done with a carrier.

Unfortunately the carrier pilot had an IRL crisis (they had to move house at short notice & were unable to access their PC for a while). I was the only passenger with a long range ship good enough to get back to the rest of the galaxy (we were in the Void region). I bucky'd 48,000ly back to the bubble to buy a carrier, filled it up with bought tritium & started to race it back to the stranded carrier to rescue the rest of the passengers.

Fortunately the carrier pilot was able to get their PC set up in a new home while I was en-route, and move their carrier closer to the rest of the galaxy. We met up in Colonia a few weeks later, I spent the time mining for tritium to refuel my carrier & we transferred enough to the other one to get back to the bubble.

After that we agreed it would be better if we continued our trip on my carrier (I play every day).

When I'm in the bubble I don't have much use for it other than to indicate our squadrons interest in a system (mobile advert). It gets used as a rearm/repair depot during wars if there is no other available carrier or station but generally i prefer not to advertise my presence so it usually stays in a nearby system.

I store all my ships & stored modules on it for quick transfer to the station I need a specific ship moved to, and it has Universal Cartographics & Vista Genomics for selling data to while out exploring. It has all facilities apart from the secure storage & there is at least one 'passenger' still on board although they haven't logged on in over a year.

In Live I'm currently out in the black, usually I travel by ship & set the carrier to follow me, when I get close to the rim I jump with the carrier & explore the otherwise unreachable destinations.

In legacy it's just parked in a fairly central location & I rarely visit it. Every so often I dock & transfer any ships I have been using but no longer need back to it.

It costs me around 30m/week in upkeep (trivial for me) and I transfer any excess credits over 1bCr to it's bank with upkeep set at 95% so it will remain if I am unable to play.

The carrier I was originally travelling on is called 'Dawn Will Come', I named mine 'Evening Star' as a kind of homage to my friends.

That's a great story. Thanks for sharing.

Transport boat for my ships, primarily. Faster than the transfer times to a station*, and I have some builds that are swapping parts rather than just being on an entirely different ship, too. So yeah, I prefer to keep stuff in a centralized location, than to have it scattered all over the Bubble… or have to jump a Corvette/FDL around to get somewhere further away.

(Alternatively, I use it to go somewhere slightly further out like the crystal shard sites, where there is nothing to be done on the way.)

I also prefer to see it as ‘mobile home’ currently, rather than being stuck settled down at starport XYZ near a brown dwarf star.

*When everyone isn’t suddenly playing only because they can drive themselves insane moving gold between a station and a carrier, then back to another station again. Then log off once more when the cash cow expires and wait for the next one. (Yes, assuming, but it sure feels that way.)

I use it literally because it's a "Home".

Sometimes I go to the galaxy center, sometimes I use it for thargoid hunting, sometimes for BGS work, and sometimes for exploration.

I'm totally acting on my own.

In short I have an FC for "enjoyment".

For me, a carrier is a warehouse.

I can mine stuff when I am in the mood and store stuff until I am ready to sell it. I had 600+ tons of platinum stored, so that went straight to the current trade CG.

For a trade CG I can load from well stocked stations far from the CG location and jump close to offload (whether I use one of my CMDRs or sell to the gen pop).

I have also stocked a quantity of agri products, and when doing BGS stuff, if the faction wants such stuff, park the carrier and fill their needs.

Extra storage capacity for Ody materials, which if I want to can sell via a bartender.

And just in case the thargoids drive humanity out of much of the bubble, suspended services for that day when I have to bug out to somewhere safe. Not going to happen, but a bit of RP planning.

becuase ive got many billions in the bank and nothing else to spend it on? :)

i think with this latest CG and the ridiculous profits, pretty much every active player in the game is going to have one for the same reasons.

Mine is mostly a mobile base camp for whatever I might be doing, storing most of my ships and modules (some are still in Colonia). It especially opens up exploration—the ability to switch ships to change things up is really nice. Or just sell all the exploration data, hop into Viper MKIII and go hooning exploding because why the hell not?

It's also nice to be able to sell surplus Odyssey materials to those in need—when I do on-foot stuff, I tend to end up with a lot of weapon schematics, ionized gas and other such stuff.

Lastly, I RP that my carrier offers a home and livelyhood to many people displaced by the thargoid war. The Nautilus class has a nice space for centrifuges in the bow, allowing for healthy long-term habitation🙂

Each of my accounts has its own carrier and each carrier is fully loaded - 34,5 millions weekly upkeep

Simply because it's a base of operations - so i used it as such, keeping my ships and modules in one place, and moving the base to where i need to settle.
I also use my carriers as bulk traders when the needs be - usually i use 2 accounts to load/unload the same carrier, dividing the benefits between the 2 accounts (with the carrier owner benefitting a bit more - i dont use the transfer option, i only use buy/sell orders and i make sure the carrier makes some profit from any transaction)

I dont keep much tritium on my carriers, one of them has less than 1000t.
And i also remove heavy services as needed if i want more carrying capacity for bulk trade (like shipyard and outfitting)

For general trade I got into a habit of visiting ports tens of thousands of ls from the entry star that are usually bypassed by players, loading up and trading elsewhere.
Also trading rares as I can stock up on the carrier and go back for more.
