Why do YOU play In Open?

To me the game is much more fun with an undercurrent of danger. I like to enter a notorious system and be scanning my radar...

I fly in Open because I no longer believe that it’s as bad, expensive and murderous as I was led to believe.* Since flying in Open I’ve enjoyed the game more with a heightened sense of who or what may be waiting in the next system - the reality is usually just another Cmdr ..... looking for Pharmaceutical Isolators.

I still usually switch to Solo if I’m at Dav’s Hope, Bug Killer etc etc simply because I see little point chasing the same Chemical Manipulator as someone else who instanced with me before we both end up relogging anyway.

*I rarely get to play at the weekends so this may have a massive affect on my experiences.

I used to play in solo, exploration was the part of the game that I was really excited by when I started. Flying in a paper thin almost shield less AspX and when I got back to the bubble being nervous about the cartographic data I had made solo the choice.

After a time I took a trip to Colonia and while I do pop back to the bubble for various things I mostly base myself there. Recently the calm and gentle people at Carcosa put out a call for Cmdrs to help at the CZ there. So I went and because it was for a specific purpose went in open, hoping to meet people being a part of it.

Now, unless I have a special purpose, like flying a mining ship with 100t of void opals and no weapons, I always fly open. Also I now discovered that fighting against humans is much more fun than against the computer.

Flying in pen adds depth and character to the game, as a general rule its much more fun. I totally understand why people pay solo for a number of reasons, but mostly open is just better.

It took me several years to get round to this point of view though!

So to the title, why do YOU play in Open, and would you still enjoy the game if you were either stuck in Solo or an 'empty Open' like we supposedly have on PS4?

I like meeting players, even though I don't enjoy PvP. As simple as that. I absolutely loved taking on Thargoids in groups and Distant Worlds 2. So I play in open hoping for friendly co-op.

FWIW, my bandwidth cap reset so I'm playing in Open again, but not in busy areas. The primary reason is to avoid triggering that bandwidth cap again for this month, the assumption being that more players in an instance, the more bandwidth the game uses. Hopefully a random ship encounter out in the willywags where I'm working won't 'break the bank'.

I don't beleive that online gaming actually uses all that much of your data, for a long old time I played through a phone tie due to living on the water and not having a line, 10GB was seldom ever hit unless I tried downloading patches or watching youtube a lot.

Guess what I'm saying is come to Shinrarta. Your visit is rather overdue.

Regarding bandwidth cap, how do you manage game updates? Surely they knock your limits for six?
Just curious. 🤔

I toss my PS4 into my laptop bag and take it to a friend's house or the office after-hours. For this reason I also get bigger games like RDR2 on physical disc. Our town has high speed internet, but I live in a very remote area, so I rely on cellular data ATM.

That makes sense now. I understand.

PC only Open only.
PC, because it started digital gaming, bringing it forward. Open only because its has the right consistence for my role play.

I've been thinking about this lately. In another thread someone mentioned the larger player base as a reason to switch to PC. Yet here I am currently stuck in Solo because I hit my monthly bandwidth cap, now waiting for it to reset. Thing is, I'm enjoying what I am doing in Solo and likely wouldn't have encountered any CMDRs here where I'm doing it, at least not on PS4. And then there's the whole "pay to play (in open)" aspect to consoles.

There are three reasons that come to mind that people seem to love Open in ED. One is PvP, another is Group PvE (wing missions, expeditions, etc.), and then there is "Space Facebook" where it's all about talking on Discord about politics and religion while driving SRVs in circles, LOL. Of these, only Group PvE has ever truly interested me, and even this I can live without.

For me personally, the shared galaxy is what makes playing ED feel like a 'community' experience, regardless of game mode. Even if I don't see a hollow square or "o7" in my comms, I know that we're all shaping this galaxy together with our actions, be it the BGS, CGs, discoveries, etc. It's the thing that keeps drawing me back to ED over other cool but 'lonely' games like Subnautica.

I play in open because i can afford to. I have enough re-buys, so that the occasional idiot distroying my ship; is not really an issue. I use the block option, against those that have just killed me, without a word in the chat panel. Others, especially if they are role playing and I loose; I just accept as a part of my game and leave them un-blocked.

I have just spent a month or so, going for my Pack-hounds. All in open play; just to prove I can. I met loads of commanders, during my travels; most of which, I found friendly, I met some bad guys, waiting outside the stations, but I was ready for them and only had to Hi-wake a couple of times. I found it all good fun. I got killed twice, by NPCs. So only two losses in 4 weeks. Funny thing. I collect my pack-hound and then un-pledged and the next day; I make my way back to Cubeo, again in open. As soon as I hit my home system; some idiot in a FAS (I think), pulls my out of SC, and without a word; takes my hull down to 4% and then, as I am Hi-waking says 'leave or die'.

I will still logging into open play, as always.

The only issue I really have is. Everything is so slow, jumpy etc.. Especially in crowded areas.

I play Open, I always say hello (o7). I don't like getting ganked, but then again I don't like vanilla ice cream either. Solo is just that, alone.

I used to play in open (did plenty of pvp pre and post engineers), but it's too toxic (always has been)

I only play in private / solo now.

Most of the time I play in Open. I like sharing the galaxy in others and knowing we can meet (although probably not a big chance for that in the Perseus Arm sector where I am now). I usually don't interact with others though, if I can avoid it. Maybe an o7 salute. I find the text-chat interface cumbersome (especially in VR!) and I don't really care for talking with others while playing.

Powerplay or BGS from solo mode is a boring grind competition that nobody wins. No thanks, I already have a job. The only "competition" is who has the most free time or no life.

Competition when both sides play Open is a real war with people shooting at one another. Blockades mean something, and you can both prevent and be prevented from taking an action that someone else disagrees with. A much smaller faction with more skill has a better chance against a larger one full of cream puff grinders.
When I agree with you in spirit someone with all the free time in the world has the best life I think.

I play Open 99% of the time.

I was an early access person and started out playing Open because I thought that was what I was supposed to do in a game under development. I played Open until around the 1st Beta release. I got ganked a couple of times right outside the toaster and decide at the point, I can't afford this and advance in the game. So I went Solo and played solo up to a year ago. Which means I played solo for at least three or four years straight.

The requests by many on this forum for more ppl to play Open finally wore me down so I decided to try it out.

I tend to dwell either around the periphery of the bubble or just outside it. I found out quickly, in Open there were not many ppl where I roamed. I'm convinced now you can play Open and not be constantly ganked or interdicted all the time, you simply need to pick a place that's relatively uninhabited by Cmdrs. When I go into the core of the bubble I'm mentally prepared for it (empty squares). Going where other commanders are flying gives me a sense of danger. That is good.

If I want a fight I venture into the bubble. If I just want to make money, I hang out in my systems that pay well on the periphery or outside the bubble. I like playing Open now.

I love reading all the stories about how people went into open and then got shot and then never wanted to come back. It's a whole new world compared to where we are.

Well, if you all want open without the gankers, and 75% the rest of the general ED population, come and play the game in open down under (AU/NZ time zone). We here don't see much, I can supercruise straight to Jameson Memorial from Shinrarta Dezhra in a straight line without interruption, the most irritating thing about visiting any engineers is the stupid robot voice at their bases, and you can't even spook people by turning up in a warship and pretending to chase people in supercruise while continuously honking the horn (discovery scanner). Being attacked by another player is just about newsworthy. Heck, seeing another player outside of our time zone is almost newsworthy. Best thing is that if you and all the local folks live at the same station, you can meet up and do stuff. It's like a giant private group, but without the restrictions. I enjoy seeing other CMDRs (outside of our lot) out there but they pretty much ignore me and so I go on and do my thing. I'd like to experience the outer space wild west that y'all seem to have. We just have the tumbleweeds. Perhaps a VPN terminating in the UK or US might work.

I didn't say there were no player killers however, I think there are a couple of infamous names that hang around with our lot and occasionally shoot at us, but running in to them is like winning the lottery. I have a story about that, which I may have posted elsewhere. Good times.

An alternative to "if you don't want to see CMDRs, go elsewhere". Here's it's more like "elsewhen".
