Why do YOU play In Open?

I play in open when I feel like...

1. Seal clubbing
2. Shouting GitGud at Seals as they go POP
3. Showing off my max engineered Corvette shouting GitGud at paper thin explorers as they go POP
4. Getting into PvP fights then High wake when losing
5. Streaming while doing any of the above
6. Boasting that I play in Open with my GitGud ships

I mostly play in Solo, sometimes in groups for experiments and jollies, Open never appealed to me.

I'm mostly on open (XB1), I reckon if I'm running BGS / PP activities then there might well be people with conflicting aims, and it's only fair that I'd be available for them to stop me* if they so wish.

If I'm farming at Dav's, Guardian site, 'conda crash etc then I switch to solo as it's a pain for me if somebody else is already there to nick all the stuff, and the same applies to others if I'm the one who's already there.

Also go solo when I'm exploring so if I lose all my data it's down to nobody but me, and the only person I can fly into an apoplectic spittle-flecked rage at is myself.

(* I was going to say try to stop me however that would imply that I had a chance of beating off a human enemy, whereas in reality I'd have trouble hitting a cow's @rse with a banjo)

Are you all PC players, or have some console players answered the OP?

XB player here.
Like 99% in Solo, mostly because when i log in i have my own agenda and most of the time player interactions would do nothing except delaying that agenda.
The only activity that would benefit from Open is obviously PVP (and PVE) combat.

For any other activity Solo/PG is way better.
Instancing is crap, Mining in Wing is crap.
Outpost and Megaships does not seem to have been designed with multiplayer in mind and things are not really better with stations either.

And when it comes about PVP, i don't really like the way it is implemented.
No, don't get me wrong. I did spend a lot of time in PVP games:
Did a lot of UT, slightly less CS, 7 years of Dark Age of Camelot (i still think that game had the best pvp ever), some Conan (bleah!) and also some years in Dota2.

But, ED pvp? most probably i will get into it some time, just not really attracted to it at the moment (tho i do prepare for it - think my Groms just got unlocked :D)

PS> yes, i also think that most players click Open simply because it is the implicit option.

Since being killed by murder hobos no longer holds any fear for me (I've killed myself about 100x more often through recklessness and misadventure) there's no reason not to and you never know what might happen.
Well if I do switch to PC, I'll be making my rounds and collecting some autographs, so make sure you pen has ink!

Hey I think I saw you around Witch head a week or so ago! I think you joined me and my wingmate in an AXCZ? Or was that a different bald guy?

Anyway... Xbox player here.

I spend about 75% of my time in Open and 25% Mobius PG. It depends on my mood.

I use Open for three reasons:

1) I like seeing other players’ unique ships, and there’s more of them in Open.

2) The element of danger. NPCs ceased being a challenge long ago.

3) It is easier to find a wing in Open.

That said, I’ll generally stay in PG if I’m too drunk or too tired to pay attention to my surroundings. Sometimes I just want to relax.

Similarly, I’ll stay in PG if I’m doing an activity prone to trolling: engineering a new ship or certain types of CGs, for example. I don’t mind the occasional gank but if someone’s blocking the mail slot or camping Deciat... ain’t got time for that.

Im in one of my off periods but when i do play i play in open because i like the people, i got plenty of rebuys and a g5 corvette would i imagine be hard enough to kill so that i could probably get away.
But even when i didnt have a big ship i played in open, solo just seems a little dull.

Between Cmdr Ratelimited, Cmdr Smokesignalnet and Cmdr Vpnlooksfaster I find Open largely unplayable, so I’m part of the #IDont movement.

Private Groups have been my mainstay, since I came out of playing solo. Not a fan of crowds in the first place, and it extends to virtual crowds.

The other elephant in the room is how pirates jump between open and solo.

I play Mobius. I enjoy seeing other peaceful players in the dark, but I've come across too many people in Open who want to make me their content. They've never been able to catch me in the end, but that's also why I doubt I will ever leave the confines of my G5 DD Courier.

I used to, mostly for the random encounters and/or out of principle. But recently, I've quit playing in Open, because I don't want to feed the trolls. If FDev uses player statistics to judge that Open doesn't have a serious problem, I don't want to help perpetuate that particular myth. It has.

I play in open only because not knowing whether I'll make it home adds a little spice.

If it was about taking calculated risks, I'd be all for it, but it isn't. I've encountered a player pirate once. ONCE. Huge majority of CMDR attacks are plain and simple ganking, for no in-game reason. It's all for :poop: and 🤣 , or worse.

Imperial Courier, that's why. No ganker will ever catch me. I once defeated a Federal Corvette through the doctrine of annoyance. He made a sneak attack on me at a Resource Extraction Site, but his first volley failed to knock me out and I disappeared behind the rocks. After my shield had regenerated I made several quick attack runs against him and he eventually left, too fat to do anything about my glorious speed and persistence.

I play open for the non-aggressive interaction with other players.... sorry commanders... I have had some really hilarious interactions..some link-up's with complete strangers when it turns out we are both scratching around for something to do. Have been ganked, stomped, ridiculed and generally harassed in Open... but on the whole it makes the game more ''alive''. Don't get me wrong I'm a member of the original Mobius PG, Mobius himself is on my friends list, but I usually use Solo or PG when I'm doing something critical/expensive etc. Mix it up is good... so is Open in moderation.

I was playing strictly in solo or PG until the last Interstellar Initiative.

I got bored of hauling and wanted to see what all the talk about open was about. I swapped into my sidewinder and of we went.
Who would have known, I got interdicted right away by some fed aligned CMDRs, but made it out with 35% hull left. That was one of the most exiting moments in a long time playing.
After putting on some more hull, back I went, got pulled a few more times and always made it out without exploding (thanks to EP Drives).
I went to Maia, Taygeta to defend my CMDR's winter domicile from the bugs and advance my personal narrative for combat elite.
It was mayhem in Maia, but the amount of players and recognizable names just brought the whole scenario alive.
My Xeno Krait was interdicted a lot from CODE pirates, but they weren't interested in my tasty cargo, and I always run away.
After that was over I stayed in the Pleiades to kill some more bugs and the most memorable moment was another CMDR coming on Comms super excited saying he killed an Interceptor for the first time without loosing any hull and I was there.
Yesterday I went to the Witch Head to help repair the stations. On my way back to base to pick up some materials I was followed by an FDL and the CMDR was talking about "evil superpowers" and such, I was thinking he was some xeno lover, so I wasn't responding to him (wasn't nice of me). After loading my Cutter and drifting around the base to align with the escape vector I saw him taking off and following me. I prepared to be interdicted and tried to work out how to evade and at the same time line up the jump to the next system. I heard the interdiction sound but nothing happened and I could jump to the next system.
The next few runs I kept a lookout but didn't saw him anymore until my last run. I saw him waiting at the planet and knew what comes next. I overshoot and had to do the loop of shame. Unfortunately he got behind me on my way down to the planet and interdicted me. I boosted fa off and played Streetfighter on my controller until the FSD was ready. That repeated a few more times until I was save at base. He started to talk about the superpowers again and going to Colonia, and it clicked. I am 90% sure he was one of that famous Colonia CMDRs you hear about in the news. We had a short chat and I had to go deliver the last load of polymers.

Since I started playing in open a few weeks ago I spent 90% in open and the rest in Solo. The solo is to re-engineer some of my ships to be up to the task.
I think the interactions, good or bad, with other CMDRs in open just make the game feel so much more alive and enjoyable.
