Why I and many others will rarely play open

yea, but most MMOs dont reward/encourage level 500 players for killing level 1 players.
ED does that plenty
Don't see how Elite rewards/encourages that. If by "encourages" you mean "allows" then yes, but remember that nobody is forcing level 1 players to play in the same mode as level 500 players.

That's not the case with most MMOs, where god-tier players attack noobs all the time and noobs can't do anything about that. And that's usually intended by the developer, because that noob would get angry that they get blown up all the time, and take out their credit card to purchase their own god-tier equipment to be able to stand up against other players.

Another one of Elite's beauties - no pay to win, which unfortunately is also part of many MMOs.

Through non-intervention.
And because PVP has absolutely no connection with the game, but it is allowed.

Guess there is no point in me telling you to roll an alt and go in Deciat in a non engineered ship and see for yourself how many will feel encouraged to teach you a lesson by sending you to the rebuy screen.
For absolutely no ingame reason. And with no discernible penalty attached to the action.

That would be nice scenario for blocklist harvesting :)

Its not about the odds of being ganked (rather low) or the consequences of being killed (very low). It is psychological. The typical hyper-vocal anti-Open player is of a rather specific tye: the immersion-seeking explorer/trader boomer. The types who spend thousands and hours pressing 'j' as an explorer and feeling elite while learning nothing beyond how the honk button works. Or dragging biowaste from A to B to A to B to A to B to A to B to A to B to A to B to A to B to A to B and feeling elite while learning nothing beyond how docking works.

They are the lowest-skilled cmdrs with the least understanding of the game's mechanics. They know the absolute basics, just barely enoguh to allow them to indulge their Spaceman Spiff or Major Tom roleplay. Look at them, they are really the big space man now! Until some slightly intoxicated euro-trash teen shows up on a friday and roflstomps their ships while laughing about it. The Amazing Spaceman Spiff. Bested. By some random nobody kid. Unnaceptable. Its the fault of the game. Its unbalanced. Unfair. Nothing they can do. And its the fault of the attacker. They are psychopaths. Completely bizarre, sub-human critters. And other Open players arguing that with some basic skill and preparation griefing is a non-issue? Liars, frauds, probably griefers-in-disguise trying to lure Spaceman Spiff into a trap! But he wont fall for it, no Sir! He will safely stay on the forums and fantasize about pressing 'j' once more once his shift ends. Note how the core of the Star Citizen community are the same. "You can't shoot at me! I paid $1200 to feel like a Real Good Spaceman!".

As a small amusing sidenote, the above is why these people tend to rage about the 'fragile egos' of the 'griefers'. Let it sink in. Its not the boomer dude impotently raging after having his fake space ship blown up once in a computer game that is having some ego issues. No, its the kid (who already racked up literal billions of insurance claims when dying over and over while practicing his skills without ever caring the slighest) who is insecure.
Yikes. You on the warpath again? :) But so true.
I didn't log it, but my experience @deciat is:

1) Harmless sidey = griefer magnet
2) Elite sidey/viper/courier = mostly ignored (I guess most griefers realise what that ship will be)
3) Elite corvette = griefer magnet

You can see if another ship is outfitted for PvP or not. A PvE outfitted big ship much is easier to kill than an 'trollsidey/viper/icourer', and many PvE corvette cmdrs dont realise just how easy to kill they are. By then time they figured it out its too late already. So flying a big ship is no deterrent to a skilled ganker/griefer, the opposite in fact. They will tend to ignore high-ranked players flying ships outfitted in such a way to suggest the cmdr knows what he's doing.
Again, this.
Precisely my experience as well.

I do spend a lot of time in my iCourier - it's the most gank proof ship I have (decent shields, and fast) while keeping its utility - can use it as a planet lander (SRV bay fitted), mat gatherer (8t cargo + 1A collector limpet), bubble jumper (35LY and 3A fuel scoop fitted) and light combat ship that I've used in CG RES and even CZs alike in the past (3x size 2 HP's can do decent damage and allow for some flexibility also). The only ships that can catch it are other Couriers & Vipers, but they won't have the firepower and ToT to even drop my shields.

Number of rebuys: 1 - because while chasing after a ganker at Deciat I accidentally boosted into a cliff :). It's pretty much untouchable, and a joy to fly. As a result, nobody interdicts me except for noob gankers perhaps, and they'll get bored soon enough.

932m/s Viper 3 similarly although that one is more risky as it's barely made up of paper even. Exciting to fly around in the danger zone though.
True, some desperate gankers try to do it anyways but no chance.
Nobody demands anyone to fight back. If a ganker mocks me for escaping (can happen, but rarely so) I consider that a successful salt extraction maneuver, laugh about it and carry on with what I was planning to do in the first place.
I tend to respond with a lovely git gud to those

Still, that's allowing, not encouraging.
Of course. But 'encourages' sounds more dramatic. :) These topics always go on forever, and are pretty much about nothing. FD said years ago they have no problem with, as they said 'griefcondas killing noobwinders' in general. They added a little 'noob-zone', and beyond that you are on your own. ED encourges or discourages very little; its just you, your ship and your actions to keep it in one piece. Everything else is just forum waffling.

ED is quite different in that it heavily favors the 'defender'. It is so trivially easy to prevent being ganked, and the cost in credits is so pitiful compared to current hyper-earnings, that it is a non issue for anyone who bothers to learn some basic things.

True, but only if the Defender plays certain ships, outfitted in certain ways, and they accept to have their gaming time wasted in non productive ways by the attackers - unless their specific choice of ED gaming relies on playing the lure in greyhound race.

And all those certain conditions means the Defender will not play a ship optimized for their gaming goals (be it trading, exploration, mining, whatever), but optimized to prevent their attackers to kill them, meaning less efficiency because of less optimized ships/builds and because of the potential interruptions.

Sure, some people might enjoy the thrills of playing the hare.
Others might not, but they should not be berated or insulted for wanting to mind their own business. Enjoying their own time in the game, playing alone or with friends, but without feeling the need to entertain some strangers at the expense of their own entertainment value.

The other difference (not that I know how this is handled in other MMOs as I don't play any of them) with Elite is that rank is not indicative of skill necessarily, but merely tenacity (and you can probably say experience). Getting combat Elite was one of the worst slogs the game has thrown at me. I only did it for the triple-E decal really :)

Yep, indeed.
The levels i mentioned were only indicative of the huge difference between a noob in a non engineered ship and a pro ganker in a g5 murderboat
