Why I and many others will rarely play open

There are about 11K populated systems within 150 LY of sol. It's highly unlikely all of them have at least 1 CMDR at all times even if PGs and Solo were removed.
of course, you have to think about around 15\20 system where to found cmdrs -> founders world and community goals sistem and the systems where powerplay stuff happens douring the cycle, usually not so much. sometime powers have just 1 or 2 main system to take care off.

Is there a suggestion that the gankers don't min/max their ships to optimise it for a combat role - and I doubt that they would be keen on being "forced to change how they play"?

.... which could also describe those who seek to force all players (i.e. those who choose not to play among those who engage them in no risk / no skill required [to the attacker] encounters) to play in Open for "reasons".
Considering how poorly a lot of people build their ships combat focused players don't have to min/max their stuff. Strap a gun on and you're a leg up over an embarrassingly large portion of the player base. And at the end of the day, what provides a better path to enjoying open?

Taking the game as it is and preparing accordingly?

Or still complaining about what it isn't, and at this stage, will likely never be?

They may not need to, however it seems that many do - which reduces any risk to them from their targets to a minimum.

That was the case even before engineering - players optimise their ships for different roles - and not all players are interested in combat, in which case playing in Open in populated areas may not be the best decision.

"Yes."

.... noting that complaints come from both sides, for different reasons.

If you are in a T9 loaded with Beryllium and you just jumped out from the source station in Pleiades looking at another 15 jumps towards WHN... and you get one of those interdictions that simply cannot be beaten and get blasted... yea, it is bad
And if that was the last available load of Beryllium available in Pleiades, it gets quite dramatic
I thought most solo players combat logged against NPCs. :)

These kinds of threads with it's thousands of views and over 600 replies (and now one more because I couldn't resist to contribute) is literally the thing I dislike most about the forum.
If there's "Open", "PvP", "Griefing" or "Ganking" in the title, the thread explodes with exactly the same content as all the others buried here.
Why can't mods just close them after a few pages as duplicates and redirect to one of the other threads? That would be so much better!

Apart from that it's such a useless topic. It's a freakin' game. People play it however they like and done.

They should just have a open only/bonus, gankers, menu log, block, and open letter subsection. Move any threads about those things to that subsection and change the color pallet for that subsection to a toxic greenish color to match the content, and put up a sign, "all ye who enter here abandons hope, reason, and embrace the barest semblances of civility.", or something similar.

And you have to pay a Gatekeeper named Charon a troll toll.
