General / Off-Topic Why is everything an "IP" now?

I've been watching a lot of skyrim mod videos lately, and apparently mods have moved into the realm of people claiming copyright and other IP on them?

What ever happened to game mods being copyleft and all of that?

Sadly we've moved to the era when nobody does anything for free.

Perhaps it is because trendy young millenial's and their beards need to have phrases that are new and exciting... So franchise becomes IP... Appreciating a different culture by wearing a certain style of clothing becomes cultural appropriation, this 'term' is normally used by Americans to berate anyone and everyone... Ironic that they do so in the English language, which they have appropriated and (Insert the name of an infamous politician named Alan) B______dised.
(Post a video clip if you know who it is!)

I suppose it makes them feel a bit more intelligent too. ;)
A sexist assumption there. Unless women are assumed to 'culturally appropriate' a beard from men. Which goes against the trend for women to be clean shaven; so I've heard.:)

Okay, now I want to go and ask random women if they are "clean shaven"...... but I'm fond of my teeth, so I don't think I'll bother.

:D

Can't we just call games games? :p

Because corps and investors see it as something that be owned (despite initial copyright law being very clear about having limited ownership). Otherwise they wouldn't be spending hundreds of millions on games.

What's that? You could actually invest because games are lucrative business? Naaaah. Why have just some money if you can have ALL the money?

Also having an 'IP' means you can spin off lot of things from it and earn money trough recognition. If you have something new, it costs tons of money to advertise just to get traction.

Also just from realistic point of view, there aren't many ways to call 'a thing'. Franchise? It feels overused. Also saying 'we own characters, story, settings, visual appearance' doesn't roll from tongue same way 'intellectual property' does it?

Everything is IP because everyone wants their cut. Legalism and culture encourage people to develop a sense of entitlement for anything they invent, derive, or appropriate and to milk royalties from them for increasingly absurd lengths of time. There was a time (or so I hear!) when patents and the like existed to encourage innovation and disclosure of trade secrets (in exchange for protected use for a period of time) to serve the public good, but now they are mostly just another life tax.

Also, merchandising:

Actually...it's not that everything is an IP "now."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property#History

"The first known use of the term intellectual property dates to 1769, when a piece published in the Monthly Review used the phrase.[9] The first clear example of modern usage goes back as early as 1808, when it was used as a heading title in a collection of essays."

It's just something the internet has made us all more aware of than we used to be.

Well said........... also T.j.

They populated the last E3 with it (IP, I mean), so they did with experience.. "we want to give players a unique experience", "we want players to experience", "we created these experiences".. and I'm was just watching the videos thinking.. well, you haven't experienced the ED community!!!! (where everybody except the developers are experienced in everything!)

The answer to this question is now the IP of the Disney Corporation. The first installment of the upcoming franchise will star Dwayne Johnson and will be in cinemas by Christmas.
