Why the FSS is better than the previous system.

I dont know where they get direction from but repetative tasks like teh FSS should ring alarm bells in the design process. It really does come down to the immersion thing i guess. Can you tell yourself you are a space explorer cause of the tune and zoom? Its just a grind to me. Old way was a grind too, new way is like "a little grind upon your grind sir?"

I am deliberately pointing out that there are groups of people complaining that the FSS is simultaneously "too much work" and "too easy". Hence the only logical conclusion that is that these two extremes are the outlier positions, and the consensus lies in the middle. You can't please everyone, hence, the FSS must have hit that goldilocks sweet spot of just the right amount of effort for the reward.

There are easy things that take time to do Zijan, the FSS is one of those.

You simply do not get it. :)

I've used the DSS to map out where all the signal sources are, in minutes, and then go for the ones I am interested in.

Would you rather have the old system back, where you fly, blindly, maybe for HOURS, and HOPE to get the signal sources you want?

What sources? I want to honk system maps. And yes i do want the old system back.

.
How does ` old system ` work ? , I go into unexplored system and honk...old system see all planets on map...New system...Nothing , would have to scan EVERYTHING before I could see any interesting binaries or ice Planets with nice deep crevasses , new system is rubbish.

And that's another one who doesn't understand how the FSS works trying to argue that it isn't broken.

I'm starting to wonder if nobody at FDev left the Bubble either.

Well given the honk doesn't discover objects.. there's still no competition when you put it down to gamey gamplay gains.

Removing the credit reward from the honk and letting visual and flight explorers be on their way never occurred to them it seems.

Someone got tunnel vision internally and was determined to remove it because of.. idealism??? it seems. They even introduced the most cheezy idea of flash shared communal exploration data so combat kiddies wouldn't implode if they were forced to use the fss or fly to the nav beacon in bubble (without the old ads).

Can you imagine that.. no honk and combat players in the bubble? Even frontier weren't that silly. Yet somehow people out of the bubble have to suck it up now.

Nah, the 'combat ship with no ADS' issue was resolved by making the FSS a zero-sized module - in beta, naturally, since nobody at FDev ever min-maxxed a ship.

The 'exploration by committee' thing is them trying to make exploration multi-player after they found out the couldn't make it work with multi-crew. Zero throttle for the FSS and probes removes the reason for a 'science officer'.

The Codex Steam Achievements is there to make up for the fact that the new system makes discovering things too easy, so they added something that gives players a reason to visit more than one fumerole.

The software engineer in me says that they got too far into the 'scanner minigame' development cycle before they got any user feedback, and couldn't start over, so had to kludge everything together to make it (kinda) work.

I think its inverse.. if they designed the system to be in cockpit, however it turned out, it would *not* work in multicrew.... its kinda funny to hear a perspective from someone whos interested in that to consider it doa for the same reason. I think the blue screen minigame.. completely against the in cockpit design pillar frontier created themselves and have provided to us for long.. would have not have come about without such an arcane business requirement.

During beta i linked obsidianants review video of x4.. they have a working fss in cockpit.... pretty much the exact same parameters as elite (objects in space). It even has pulsating blobs to represent undiscovered objects.. good revelations from seeing it inaction.

Multicrew exploration could have been great - pilot is fuelscooping will the science office identifies possible targets of interest, then off they go to perform a quick flyby of the planets while the SO launches probes. Definitely had potential, but for some reason FDev couldn't make it work - or not in a way that is compatible with single player too. It needs AI crew, I think - then you could leave the AI to fuelscoop while you scan, plot a course between the bodies you want to probe and have the AI fly it while you play Mr Spock.

I've played X4 - scanning is essentially the old IDS with prettier graphics and more interesting stuff to find. I think it works better because the scale of the systems is smaller and you know where the limits are.

Mind blown!!!!!!

Just wanted to say.. the FSS feels so good and natural.... ON CONSOLE!!!!

Just tried it and everything about it feels like its at place and at home. The clicking, the panning, somehow feels so organic and right when all the controls are on a gamepad. It feels like something you should be doing there, and the console experience feels like its added to by this thing.

I think also, there's a slight new player nothing established its all still a gimick effect im getting on console too.. if you're just mucking about the sandbox pseduo aimlessly its great.

I hope this wasn't how it came about. Because on hotas and kbm its.. well im sure you have seen some of my feedback so...

The issue with the FSS not being in-cockpit & having to slow down is that it will usually be done close to the entry point of the system leaving the player potentially feeling vulnerable & therefore under some pressure to remain in the FSS Scanner Screen for as short a time as possible. Depends on where the player is, depends on which mode they are in. Way out in virgin territory this is much less of an issue.

The probe/mapping screen also requires the player to be stationary & without control but it's much less of a potential issue because a) it can wait, b) it's close to a body so the chance of being spotted by another player is much lower, and c) probing most bodies doesn't take more than a few seconds.

Ironically I think the 'hunt the mystery signal' mechanism used in the FSS Scanner Screen would be much better suited to finding static POIs on a planet surface where the potentially protracted session away from the ship controls would be less of a concern, and in multi-crew the ship could be piloted around the body to complete the scan more quickly and avoiding the need to retcon infinite probes and the special effects from a film* that pre-dates even the original Elite completely.

I am still waiting for these interdictions whilst in FSS/DSS mode and I have been exploring since Beta dropped. I will admit I have been interdicted a total of 3 times whilst in the 'naughty' screens, twice by System Authority - just dropped out of SC, waited 15 seconds and re-entered SC and continued my scans. The only other one was a NPC pirate, but since I didn't have cargo I wasn't overly concerned. I still had enough time to exit the FSS, change to Combat Mode, and beat the interdiction easily. In fact I have been interdicted many more times after exiting the FSS screen, normally either after scooping or on my way to map a body, but to me that is just normal.

Maybe if I was flying deep in the bubble I might experience more, and yes I am in Open before you say something - but once I get outside the bubble I rarely see another ship much less get interdicted. To be honest, even if I did get interdicted and destroyed, it wouldn't bother me too much, it is the same as running a Elite haulage mission where I know someone will come after me, it is just a facet of the game.

I concur. However that is not what I said.

1) It is equally great on hotas, if you bibd it well. Better even, because I can do it one-handed so can drink while scanning. :)

2) If you cant work ut out, use your controller on pc just for the fss.

3) the constant 'combat kids' 'tunnel vision' etc ad hominems make it hard to take you seriously. If your point relies on randomly insulting other people, who aint even part of the discussion, your point seems weak.

As mentioned, I use the FSS using HOTAS, am on my way to the formadine rift, have scanned a metric ton of bodies and discovered tons of stuff. Exploration hss never been this awesome! Then again, I am also a combat kid.

Because I am not only elite explorer, but also got the real elite rank. :p

I like the new FSS. Took me a while to suss out the gist of it, but now I am okay with it. Its much the same as before, but I can do deeper exploration if I want or just honk and go as I used to.

Ive not 100% sussed resolving USS etc, but Im sure I shall suss that eventually.

So its a thumbs up from me.
