Why the hate for playing in open?

I'd like some input here as someone who exclusively plays in open. I constantly read while perusing the forums people stating they only play solo or PG and that they won't even bother with open. What's the deal? Are people that afraid of losing their ship and ending back at the rebuy? I get dropping to solo if you can't get a parking spot at a CG or something like that, but to completely ignore he entire galaxy out there seems to go against what this game means.

I certainly don't hate people who play in Open. Good luck to you. But the credo of this game is "play the way you want to". The way I want to play is in Solo.

Not what I meant. I didn't state people hate me playing in open. I'm asking why so many people; your comment included now, say they play in solo. What drives you away from playing in open? Is it a desire to play by yourself in solo or is it a desire to avoid undesirables in open?

Maybe they subscribe to the school of Thomas Hobbes? Perhaps they have a cold and don't want getting other people sick?

What does this game "mean" anyway?

I play in a PG. I get to hang out with other like minded CMDR's and dont have to worry about Sadist CMDR's that hunt down under powered ships with no cargo and turn tail when evenly matched or out matched.

Last time I played in open which was last week for about a hour. I was in my main battle conda and got interdicted by a CMDR Vette. He though I was a under powered exploraconda or a tradaconda. Didnt ask for anything. Just started attacking. Once he saw I had teeth that would have taken him. He ran.

I just stay in my PG now, cause honestly I got tired of trying to do CG's and being constantly interdicted by PVP CMDR's that have nothing better to do and go to CG systems to troll other CMDRs and make their lives a living hell.

Well looking at the game and the expanse with which the human race has expanded through it doesn't limiting your interaction with those in the game cut back against that expansion? It limits the events that can happen to you in the game. Plus the name is Elite: Dangerous. It's a dangerous galaxy. The game seems to promote inclusivity and expansion yet limiting that seems to counter that. Those are my thoughts, I don't however think you are wrong for avoiding open and only playing solo. As you said okay the game how you want to play. I certainly wouldn't expect or want to impact in any way the way someone enjoys the game.

I'm simply asking why do some subscribe to the idea that solo is the only way for them. To this point no one has actually given any reasons. You seem to just be questioning why I would even ask such a ridiculous question. I'd like to understand why so as I continue to read through the comments and partake in the ED galaxy I understand where someone is coming from.

Thanks for providing your reasons. That makes sense. Are you on PS4 or a different system?

He did say, he plays PG to play with like minded CMDRs.

I personally play all 3 modes. Currently exploring and in open in the hope I'll see another explorer or two on my travels.

I have no hate for playing in Open. I use all three modes depending on mood and what I am doing.

I would play exclusively in Open if it weren't for malicious griefers. I am not afraid of PVP and rather enjoy a spirited fight with something other than the AI, but griefing is just too rampant. There is nothing PVP about attacking an unmanned ship. I have seen two examples of it just this weekend. Both while I was in my well kitted and engineered corvette. First I was collecting some nearby mats in the SRV and a jackhole starting firing on my ship. The shields were holding fine which gave me time to make a decision. The second was while using SLF and leaving the vette stationary while I checked out a feature, again some sucker punching B* attacks the ship, unmanned, not bothering anyone, just sitting there. To me, griefers are cowards. Real PVPers want sport. Sadly, there are too many griefers to enjoy the game sometimes, so Solo it is.

I still play in Open, but at first sign of one of those cowards, I switch....can't be bothered since they just run when you fight back.

Well, to be blunt, no one has to (even though they have already).

If your curiosity has been peaked by the reasoning behind why individuals who chose to play Solo or PG do so, and you look to find the foundation of this reasoning, then do the basic research in the views, opinions, and discussions that have already been posted in this forum (there are hundreds, if not more). In your opening statement, you already mention that you have perused many statements of others regarding playing Solo or PG, and most likely they have stated why they chose that option. You already know that.

I don't believe anyone is labeling your question as "ridiculous". However, it does seem to lean towards being a bit "bait-ish".

However. Such as with any forum. Enjoy.

I'm on PC. Been playing since Horizons came out. I comment on any of the platform threads because we may be on different systems, but we are all playing the same game effecting the same galaxy. I've played all modes in that time. It just seems there are a lot more CMDRs in open lately that just want to pray on unequipped CMDR's or new CMDR's with blockades on Eravate. All it is doing is pushing more people to PG's and solo. Considering Mobius had to open another PG just to accommodate the influx of more people leaving open.

Opens fine. I've had probably had less than 10 'hostile' interactions since I started in open around early August. A few legit pirate interdictions where I either donated cargo, or had none to donate and was let go unharmed. Had a few more murder hobbo interdictions, but I've won all those except the last where I made the mistake of shooting first (so used to NPC interdictions that I forgot a PVP interdiction doesnt mean the interdictor is automactically wanted) and had to retreat when the local cops showed up. Ive also helped a few random cmdrs outside of stations when a request for assiatnce has gone out over local chat.

But mostly, outside of CG areas, I rarely see other players. Theres not much difference between solo and open. That said, I do jump into solo every now and then when I'm just trying to get something (mostly engineer grind) done and absolutely do not want to be bothered by anyone.

Well to be blunt as you say, if you're responding to the topic at hand then yes you should provide a reason as that was the question posed. Why even other responding if you don't feel the need to answer the question. And no, I wasn't satisfied with the reasons I found so I posed the question on the PS4 forum as that's how I was introduced to the game and the community in which I play it.

Thanks for ringing in with your two cents

That makes perfect sense. That's what I was wondering. It's frustrating that kind of interaction has forced these groups to grow like that. I wonder if this is more the culture of the PC gamers or if this is something to expect to spread to the PS4 community once it's been around for the length at which it has been on the pc. I haven't seen that level of griefing take place on the PS4 to this point and haven't yet seen any of the blockades.

Part of what draws me to Elite is the sense of vast isolation so I quite enjoy playing in solo.
I'm also competitive and logically oriented; so as a fairly new player, I feel my time in that respect is best spent acquiring the skills and in game finances/wherewithal to make steady progress in pvp.
So I'll actually be seeking out other people for that aspect soon enough.

That's what I like about this game, it can be many things even to the same person.

Why the boxes man?

:)

I play open all the time and I think I've met one person in the last 4 months ... we said "hello" and went about our own merry way.

That makes sense. No boxs intended, more of a poor word choice on my end. More or less trying to understand the boxes that have been made out there that if you play in open your either a griefer or greifer fodder. Really looking to hear people input on why they play solo vs open to see if it's a mindset that spread from the PC's established community or if it's based on experiences in the PS4 community. Part of the dew for the game for me is the open galaxy and all the possibilities that provides, but if open becomes so desolate because people are playing solo or PG then the game loses some appeal for me. That's why I was looking to understand why people were in which instance and why.

I'd put it down to "fun". Everyone has their own definition of what they find to be fun and when they don't have fun they have choices - in this game that includes being selective with regard to who one plays among as Frontier had the foresight to offer three different game modes at the core of their game design while ensuring that every player experiences and affects the single shared galaxy state (BGS), Factions, PowerPlay, CGs, etc..
