Widgets on main screen

hi all,
Apologies if this has already been mentioned, I have searched but missed it.
It would be most useful to have programmable widgets to the left/right of the main HUD, for example I'd like to see local contacts on the main HUD without having to look left and then not see where I am going, even if it is for only a second or two. I'd like to show system status, name, how many jumps I am into my journey & so on in the same manner.

100% best game out there in this genre

in what way, the ability to configure or to display? I couldn't comment really as I only use the PC version.

How would that work on consoles?

Honestly don't care. We shouldn't have a watered-down experience because of console limitations. This game could be SO much more. It's extremely frustrating that we cannot customize basic things and "console" is given as an excuse.

OP, FD won't even implement HUD colors. Because of the way the HUD works, it can't handle color change without in-game assets getting messed up. There is absolutely zero chance this will happen.

Too late. Any game launched on console as well has it's wings permanently clipped. Put on the chains, PC master race.

I doubt it has anything whatsoever to do with consoles, it's just to do with whether fdev want to spend the time and cost of doing things that are (basically) irrelevant when they could be doing actual development on the game.

And they only do bursts of development on the game. Rightly or wrongly they are going to concentrate on the big picture.

wonderfully blinkered, short-sighted and exclusive approach.

How so exactly?? Yeah I get that you may not like the truth but as a PC player why should I moderate my every single want, desire, and suggestion based on if people on another platform can handle it?

I'm not screaming PC master race and insulting console players as "kiddies" or whatever, come on give me a break. But if it takes forking Elite Dangerous for console players to get me what I want, then so be it, I would prefer that.

Is that a problem?

Yes because, using the OP's HUD as example, if a widget can only be used on PC but gives advantage a CZ then console players are at a disadvantage throughout the whole war. So there's a disincentive to even playing the game on console (why? you can never get ahead in the BGS against a player with a widget). Having no widget on any platform creates a level playing field in all platforms, which has nothing whatsoever to do with machine speed.

On topic the way I see it OP is real world space craft are pretty complicated. ED emulates that even though across the 4 panels there aren't nearly as many functions. Having those functions on panels (artificially) adds complexity to the process of flying your ship while also keeping information accessible. Yes you might rather be watching your target head up .. but your complicated ship is demanding your attention ... and looking away into panels adds that complication.

So widgets could be cool to have but in the end there are probably a couple of reasons why we're unlikely to see them any time soon.

There's no evidence ED would be any different if the console versions had never happened.

You're guessing and blaming consoles.

Some are due to a game design decision, others to have a level playfield, specifically in a game with a real-time clock
And before ED was launched on Consoles it was still required to support crap computers - that in-case you wonder why the hyperspace sequence takes exactly the same time on the fastest pc or on the crappiest one.

No I'm not. The OTHER poster shot this idea down 'cause consoles. Not me, I was merely responding to him.

I don't know if consoles are the reason this can't happen or not and frankly I don't care. I'm not saying that to be mean or exclusionary at all. I'm here to discuss ideas and suggestions etc etc, not guess at what's possible or not because of consoles.

Okay, but you do seem to be suggesting it's down to consoles though:

I think the point is there's no evidence there's any correlation at all between console and how Elite has been developed. The design of the hud and the lack of widgets and customisation predates consoles in ED, it's simply the design philosophy of the game.

I mean it could change, they could implement widgets, hud customisations, or even full clickable buttons and VR controller support.

They won't though. Quite rightly imo. Maybe in a future product.

How do we go from “I can’t be bothered to press a button” to “consoles are watering down my experience” ?

what a joker

I wasn't so much worried about 'the truth', more reflecting that there may be reasons why Elite has evolved the way it has.

for example:
If it wasn't for consoles, would there ever have been the need for controller support? (keyboard + mouse is sufficient)
if it wasn't for consoles, would the menus be updated / streamlined to ease use? (short-cut keys is sufficient)

I dont know the answer, but it may be possible that without consoles some of the innovations that you now use on PC will never have been developed.
That was why I commented on the statement being a bit short-sighted.
