Will Jonty be recognised in game?

I must admit that when I first saw the term "Jonty up" being mentioned on KS I didn't know what it meant so I Google'd "Jonty" and found this:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jonty

Jonty have you been editing your own name? If so, that is wonderful humour!

Skinny, bespectacled, and perpetually youthful-looking individual with an unhealthy interest in technology.

Clean-cut appearance and slightly elevated social ability and personal cleanliness means they are more socially acceptable than a standard dork and can be safely invited to parties, although interpretations vary and there is a constant risk they will discuss computing.
"The audience at Robot Wars was full of Jonties."

Let's just hope that anyone looking up "Jonty" doesn't think it's any of the other definitions!

Origin of "Jonty'

Sorry, I have been following the kickstarter comments, but time hasnt allowed me to keep up with the 100K comments on the KS page.

Anyone care to put together a history of the term 'Jonty' and how it came about.

(with all due respect to the person himself of course)

Thanks & Cheers

As far as I know it came from Jonty starting low on his pledges and consistently upping his pledge in a fit of excitement :)

So the term "to Jonty" or "doing a Jonty" was born :)

The term was coined after the person on here "Jonty Campbell" he was so enthusiastic he kept upping his pledge and it became known as "donig a Jonty" and led to other people doing the same.

The definition would be "to increase one's pledge favourably especially in monetary terms".

:)

If you are lucky Jonty himself might post on this thread. :)

Jonty is lovely bloke and I follow him on twitter (worth a follow if you are on twitter) but I'm afraid the term "to do a Jonty" makes no sense at all unless you were part of the Kickstarter comments threads or have read this thread. If you are going to use a term or someones name ingame it needs to be subtle as in the Jonty Bass type idea. Telling people they can Jonty up their engines however will make absolutely no sense to a lot of people playing the game. I'm quite happy for people on the Kickstarter to be referenced in a small way. There were lots of people who spent a lot of time on the KS and answered questions etc like Lars, Eric, Deus etc who would be worthy of a mention

LOL. Nothing like being involuntarily famous. :)

I can't wait to buy my first trade unit of "Jonty Bass" fish from "Jonty World"

Would be hilarious if Jonty show's up and starts scaring people away from 'his' planet because they don't get the reference :D

Hi people,

I looked it up and it was Barry Markwick on November 10th who came up with "just done a 'jonty' . - upped my pledge :)". Up til then Jonty had raised his pledge a dozen times or so in less then a week. It then became a meme in a matter of a few 100 comments.

Oh and don't confuse Barry Markwick with Barry Pitcher :D

 Don't mention the 'B' word! :p

EDIT: FYI for those out of the loop on that one; this refers to a deserter of the cause!

I think Frontier will think this through carefully. The problem with Kickstarter references is that by the time we get to play E:D a lot of people will have forgotten what the joke / term was.

Hehe, ED was my first KS and first I thought that Jonty was a know KS thingy for adding to your pledge... I later found out it wasn't :)

All new words make no sense to most people at first, that's what makes them new words.

The correct manner in which to introduce a new word into the language is to confidently grab hold of it and start using it in its intended context as if this was the most natural thing in the world, and six months later you'll know if it stuck or not.

I will add though that used as a verb, jonty should not have a capital J.
