Will the 2020 ED build move away from peer to peer?

Here you both go, from August 2018:

New Era has been in full production since last August, as that is what FDev literally said.

Weird, I would have sworn it said they moved to pre-production in that post. Oh well, thanks for correcting me, humble pie it is!

I hope NEW ERA means something else and IN-GAME not something AROUND the game.
I hope that NEW ERA means Atmospheric Planets and Legs.

Atmospheric Planets would bring in the ERA of the LIGHT. Now when you land on a planet, even if you're on the day side the sky is dark like at night.
Legs would bring the ERA of SENSE OF SCALE and EXPLORATION: explore your ship, the stations, the planetary bases (your own base maybe?) and the undiscovered ELW's in our galaxy of course. Sneak in secretely in Thargoid Bases to steal their secret plans or some new technology for space travels... So much potential!

That is speculation, not pedantry. Read FDev's statement (31st August 2018) again.
"A while ago, our development went from pre-production into full production on our next major milestone of Elite development."
You are right, a while ago could mean less than 4 weeks ago.

Star Citizen supports maximum 50 players per server, not hundreds in one environment. The latter requires Cloud Imperium to implement server meshing which isn't yet on the roadmap. The full game of Star Citizen is many years away from release; FDev aren't waiting for that moment to release "held back content", New Era has been in full production since last August, and will have a total production time of 2yr+ when it arrives in the second half of next year.

What I was saying is:
massive multi player experience as e.g. it shows in Star Citizen or in other MMPG where hundreds of players are in one environment
which means games with massive multiplayer experience, like SC (with 50 as you said) or others with hundreds or more. The point is: E: D is NOT a massive multiplayer experience and will probably never be.

In the beginning, when the kickstarter and SC early pledges have been, nobody would have known when releases would happen. FDev always delivered more or less in time more or less what they have been promising, SC on the other hand, at those times, was expected to be the one and only space simulation and for FDev the only choice was to release before SC. They did and the decission was good and successfull. But still the coming of SC was expected to define the new standard which would mean that E: D could be dead just with release of SC. So, for E: D the strategy could be: if release of SC is near let us release what awesome we have until then and E: D will survive and prosper in the future, because E: D may be still ahead of SC.

Now looking back it seems, this strategy was not necessary as SC will not release in the near future if ever. So here we are, waiting desperately for the next steps.

This is all just speculation and dreams, so for me it's fine as my hopes are still on E: D and not on SC, because SC is way to much first person for my taste. Even if SC will be released some day, I believe it will not be my game anymore, but E: D always was and will be with the New Era (or whatever will come).

The thing to remember is that 99% of all instances contain only 1 player.
It would be incredibly inefficient and costly use a client-server model to support that.

Where there may be opportunities for improvement is to look at how the P2P model decides who the host is when there are multiple players.
And in cases where an instance becomes 'busy', then look at transferring the host duties to a dedicated server.

I don't expect FDev to move away from P2P. Maybe if they eventually make a new version of Elite a number of years down the road, but not next year.

Space won't be "alive" without central servers.

Subs aren't required for central servers. There are many many many mmos with central servers and no subs.

My prediction though, is that there will be a hybrid model.

P2P for all space not connected to the most popular systems and CGs, Central servers for popular systems and CG locations. This will be cost efficient, and bring life to the game.

Spacelegs in stations (large meeting areas with many players) won't work without some sort of central server.

The supposed roadmap leaks that have been happening (which has been accurate so far) does not mention atmospheric landings, unfortunately. But it does mention spacelegs and base building actually.
But anyway, I don't have too much hope for New Era considering Frontier's development speed on Elite so far.

The entire problem will go away once everybody has a decent internet connection and AWS costs way too much anyway. So, P2P is the way to go & therefore it will stay ;)

O7,
🙃

Subscription definitely a no, no from me - read uninstall faster than Jack Flash if they went down that road.

Space Legs as a paid add-on with a good single player campaign/story along the lines of Terran Conflict would be however be a Day One purchase for me.

I only play in Solo/PvE so if PvP disappeared along with all its salt and baggage, wouldn't bother me personally.

People need to remember that "Project 2020" is going to be an EXPANSION for the game and not a re-write.

Point being, whatever they produce for 2020 has to be something that people can say "no thanks" to, and still carry on playing the game they already have.

Sure, it's possible FDev could completely re-write the netcode for the game but, if they did that, they'd have to make the effort to get it all working with the current game and then offer it as a free update - and then they'd have to come up with something else as paid-content in 2020.

Nobody here is suggesting that a networking revamp would be the flagship addition. They're just suggesting it could be part of the update. (FDev have added plenty of things in paid updates that were applied to the core game too).

I'm not sure anyone would say 'no thanks' to better networking ;)

I just hope Elite will not waste dev time on shooter stuff. I play this game because of space. Walkin in statinons and the ship well. ok. why yes? why not? I dont really care. Net code? I would be one of those to pay monthly sub if they would manage to get a good server for power vs power warfare up and running. But I highly doubt that.

PvE shooting Thargoid NPCs in some dusty caves? No thanks!

Scavanging deserted ghost ships in deep space inhibited by strange alien species. Yes, sure!
