Will there be more exploration content after Q4?

11,000 players - I bet many of them explorers - turned up for an exploration event.

Now, we all know how that turned out.

But, if there's one good thing to emerge from the event, its that explorers have proved to Frontier - yet again - how hungry they are for content. Which isn't surprising since we've been fed crumbs for years now.

So, I hope that after Q4, Frontier consider adding more exploration content, and don't think "Right! That's the exploration stuff done, time to get back to creating more combat content." This game has been stuffed with combat content, especially since 2.4.

I dare say there's more combat content to come in Q4, despite that being focused on exploration and mining. We know that fleet carriers and ice planets have been put on hold due to an adjustment for content focus which adds "significant new gameplay". But, what is that gameplay based on? If it ends up being more combat, my screams of frustration will be heard in Sag-A.

The audience for exploration content is there, Frontier. The massive turnout to Gnosis (and the reaction to that event) proves it beyond doubt.

If 2018 was Yet Another Year of Combat, then 2019 should be The Year of Exploration. I hope Q4 is just the beginning of that overdue journey.

Elite dangerous could easily become the ultimate exploration game because of the potential of the one to one galaxy. And I hope Q4 is just the beginning... I have a terrible feeling however, it will be the last exploration update for a long time though.

OP - yes agreed !

Flimley - There are signs the next big thing in 4.0 will be based on atmospheric planets (I wish it was legs !) so that's got to count a lot toward exploration. I mean, what else can you do with it ? Unless it is Legs with atmosphere, in which case it could be boarding ships and pew pew on feet :(

400 billion systems full of potential, why make such a big galaxy if you're not going to do anything with it.
All content that's presently available could be put in less the one percent of that number and it still would take you a lot of time to find it.
I share your feeling though, exploration is obviously not very high on Fdev's priority list, lest they would've given it some attention way sooner.

It is truly very baffling.
I can only attibute it to market forces, i.e, what’s simply most popular. (Shooting games)

I hope it's the other way round, "Ok we've finished with the combat stuff, now let's get back to all the exploration and other content". Combat has had a lot of attention, it must be getting somewhere close to where they want it to be, if they have a clear idea. Sometimes I do wonder.

I can guarantee one thing for sure... if people feel this game is "empty" now, they'll definitely see it after Q4 passes and there's no significant exploration content/depth of gameplay added.

If it's just another meh "Year of Combat..." addition, I'd lay money on the fact this game will have about half the amount of active players... IF that.

In short, Frontier- in case you haven't noticed, there's a tremendous amount of your playerbase that's sick of the combat-focus of this game.

Woot. Atmospheric planets.

Now we can fly down to a surface where the sky is blue instead of black and the surface is dotted with green things.

Am I missing something? :D

Don’t see the point if we can’t get out and pull up a few seedlings for research, TBH.

At the very least surface prospecting and alternative srv types that give us different ways of interacting with things.

I hope that once they get the basics in for exploration in the Q4 update that it will be easier to add these things as time goes by.

I don't expect another big exploration update, but at each update they could add other stuff that can be discovered.

Yeah iam getting reaaly excited by lightning in space while flying through some smoke/dust.
Ugh.
Oh and yeah scanner drones wich will insert another line of info into the system map.
Great.
Sigh.

Frontier didn't need the gnosis non-event to tell them how eager explorers are for some content and events. If they'd paid attention they'd see for months now thousands of players have already been signing up to take part in the Distant Word 2 expedition (i'm one of them :D). I think they must be aware by now about dw2 and how exploration gets more people involved than combat or trading events ever will. They must be blind if they can't see how popular exploration is so q4 will be a defining moment for a lot of players imo. Surely they won't neglect explorers AGAIN?

The better question will there be any exploration content in Q4 [big grin]

Yes they already showed some new stuff. I hope there's more.

That's oversimplification of new features. I'm excited for deeper mining and more stuff to discover.

Besides the probe launching concept... what was shown that was exploration-specific?

I mean, "graphics enhancements" are something everyone enjoy- regardless of chosen activity.

Whereis the figure of 11k players on the Gnosis coming from?

I saw there was apparent 'traffic' of 11k.. Lot's of players had more than one ship, lots of players would have been exploring about.

I don't believe for a minute there were 11k players on one ship.
