Windows 10 directx 12?

I have windows 7.. and i love it. I cannot stand windows 8 and my experiance with windows 10 is limmited to none.

I have a feeling i wont like windows 10. If i had my way i would still be using xp or even windows 95 lol but time passes buy and flashy gimmics and wow factor sensational ideas are all the rage so what can i do but cling like a.. barnicle.. to the old way untill i am forced kicking and screaming to accept the new way.

Now with that said, i have 2 days to ''upgrade'' for free. From windows 7. The only thing that makes me even consider such a thing is DIRECT X12.

Will directx12 be a big improvement? I have an i7 870, 16gig of 1333 ram and a gtx 1070 im on the old p55 chipset. I might upgrade my mobo and cpu at some point soon but and i will one day be getting VR.

Will it be worth it?

I have win7 on my desktop, and win10 on my laptop. There's no big difference at first glance. I would upgrade my desktop too were it not for some audio/music hardware that needs very specific drivers. With win7 losing official support, its bound to become a leaky mess security wise over time. DX12 is too early to tell, doubt anyone can say with any conviction what its impact is. Looks promising all the same: http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/directx-12-what-is-it-and-why-it-matters-to-pc-gamers-1318636

I'll let the experts pipe in buy I have been using W10 for months and it works just fine.
As for DX12 I play games (like ED of course) but only a select genre. I am not sure if any big titles are using DX12 currently. Think it's a "in the future" kind of thing.

Hummm... i think i will cling like a barnicle and just pay for win 10 if and when it becomes aplicable to elite.

Upgrade, there is very little reason not to.
I'm using an older machine myself, socket 1366 950, and everything is running perfectly on this still windows 10 has given little to no trouble, so there's no real reason not to.
There will be released DX12 games over time, and games might be updated to it, though many will also go the vulkan way, which should work with windows 7 just fine, but yeah, no reason to be afraid of the upgrade.

Have you seen the start menue lol and then theres cortana.. just typing it makes me throw up in my mouth, honestly who decided that name was ok! The whole thing smaks of blackrimmed glases and 1950s haircuts and people who say reem and bae 'shudders'.. there is plenty of reason to be afraid lol i miss windows 95 :(

I moved from Win7 to Win10. After getting used to the differences between the two I wouldn't go back.

I now have Win10 on all my computing devices (even an old Samsung notebook}.

Get it while its free.

As for DX12, this is still very new as far as developers are concerned. As it is only available on Win10, developers may wait until Win10 has a bigger market share. It is much leaner and efficient than DX11.

On the flip side of the coin there is Vulcan. This is an open source replacement for OpenGL Also very new so not used in many games at present. It is OS agnostic, therefore it is likely to be supported by a large number of developers, especially indy.

Which is the better of the two? Only time will tell.

I hope that helps. 😊

I have both windows 7 and 10 and i can tell you that windows 7 is very stable, has more eye candy and is the king in overall compatibility. Since you like them there is no reason to upgrade unless there is a specific program that will perform better (i strongly doubt it). If you want to try them make an image of your drive and then do the upgrade. If you dont like them, then roll back. Another thing to have in mind is that a clean install is highly recommended. I repair and reformat computers all day long and i can tell you that upgrading will mess up more or less your pc. And never mind what you hear about support ending. Windows 7 will serve us for at least 5 more years.

I decided to try Win10 a few days ago from Win7. I do not like it but I will put it on one of my PCs because of the Xbox one streaming. Im hoping that if I can stream it to the PC I might be able to use my keyboard and mouse for fps shooters. lol

I didn't reinstall windows for 4 years now. I'm an IT and i know how to handle OS, so it would work fine.

I've migrated my Win7 to new hardware 3 years ago(core2duo to core i5 3rd gen), then i've upgraded to win10 last October.
It's tweaked and all common tweaks you can find in google.
It works as it was 4 years ago, only one difference - OS now on SSD and loads in ~10 seconds.

There is a great title, Quantum Break that needs win10 and DX12 support now, but i didn't play it cause i don't like 3rd person shooters anymore.
I assume that there will be more great dx12 titles next year.

So, upgrade it now, you'll have at least month to restore your Win7, cause it'll be stored in Windows.Old folder on your C:\ drive.

Oh, and don't forget that great MMO titles like WoW and EVE Online were once DX8 and now they are DX11.

Cheers.

My impression is that Direct X 12 and Vulcan (the Open GL next gen.) will give large performance gains in the future but it requires more effort from the games developers to obtain these benefits. Also that they are optimal when combined with multiple core processors. They both could potentially offer significant performance gains.

I've had Windows 10 for some time. I did wind up turning off Cortana and the other 'find' stuff, and all of the silly notifications. But it works just fine, a little faster than Windows 7. Some stuff moved around in the menus, but it's all about the same.

I have both windows 7 & 10 installed as dual boot.
(More precisely, I did, until my windows 7 HDD died).
Eventually, pre-hdd death, I stopped using windows 7 as it offered nothing, except a bit more stability(cos it's older), over windows 10.

Windows 10 is good. Not perfect. Not terrible. Not Vista. Just Good.
Has some bugs here and there, but it's generally reliable.
It also boots much faster than 7, and makes better use of modern hardware(which I don't have).

Windows 10 also gave my ancient laptop a new lease of life!
