Windows update

Been away from gaming for a month due to work. My PC is running sweet in VR, no issues all all with ED. would rather things stay that way. Is there anything to worry about with this new Win10 update?

Thanks

No Issues here, in fact its improved things for me - Ive lost the frame stuuter I started to get after the last update

Ok thanks everyone. I'll hold off till after the bank holiday just in case things go wrong, good to hear most of you are having no issues.

cheers

Got so fillipn tired of my system crashing, jumping and running like a dog whilst in ed and VR, that yesterday morning i wiped it all off and reinstalled Win 10, used latest 1803 image, used latest Green team drivers, took 8 hours to redo everything (Biggest thing that took me time was strangly enough Voice Attack, it just would not see my Voice Pack, so went back an edition and works fine).

I must say with all the latest stuff on my VR is double whipped cream smooth and FAST, i can go back to my original 1.25 SS and 2.0 HMD and the rest on fast/ultra and still get no jumps or freezes. Brilliant.

If you have a spare DAY, and you are having issue from too much crud slowing your ED down, just Wipe it!!

1.25 as and 2.0 hmd? Must be hitting asw a lot with that

I am not an 'Avid' FPS watcher and not one who gets all shirty if it drops below 90FPS. I play the game, and if the game jumps too much or lags or stutters then i drop these settings, but i can honestly say after a complete rebuild, ridding my gaming PC of all the years of junk and crud that i downloaded to tweak this, and monitor that, that my Rift experience is better than ever. I introduced RIFT 14 months ago after a lot of the crud had already been downloaded, so never had this buttery smooth experince i am now having.

I have now NOTHING but the bare essentials loaded onto my high end gaming rig, to play the game in VR. I only have one add on to the gane ED Engineer and of course the 'I can;t do without this programme 'Dr Kaii Profile Editor' So this VR experince i am having now has for me NEVER BEEN BETTER.

BTW My rig is:

Overclocked Coffee lake i7 8700k, Nvidia 1080Ti Extreme (Not Overclocked), 32Gb DDR4, Samsung EVO 960 M.2 500Gb Drive (Foe OS and Elite) , twin Gb Samsung 960 SSD's, Bridged twin network ports, Rift VR, Custom watercooled full loop inc GPU, latest Rift and Green Team drivers, all put together by my fair hands.....

Yup.
I have experienced this a few times.

Both patching elite and windows update seems to self destruct a lot.
This is nothing new.

Had a job once in a brick and mortar pc service shop, you know cleaning viruses and repairing windows etc.
Quickest solution wipe everything, re-install.
This was during the windows xp days btw.

Anyhoo.
almost on a daily basis I would install Windows on a machine and sometimes during the patching process it would just go wonky.
Starting over again fixed it.

I'm seeing this again with win 10 and "feature updates" they can sometimes just go in wrong and best option is to reinstall.
Luckily the windows media creation tool keeps an updated ISO so making usb before installing saves you a lot of post install patching.

Same with ED patching seems to cause problems, that leads to hitching and occasional freezes, particularly noticeable in Vr and unrelated to average fps or ASW.

Ah ok fair enough yeh nice rig I have similar setup although my 2600 is oced to 4.7 and 1080ti +115 core +450 mem and I run ultra and 1.0ss and 2.0 hmd . I do this because I still get 90 FPS on planet surfaces and in a quiet Rez even!
For me 90 FPS is prepared as there are no artifacts induced or warping like with asw in certain scenarios and that when asw is active the photon to monition latency ( time it takes the headset to display after you more your head) goes up 15-20 ms which removes some of the "presence" felt for me

Mines the same, keeps rolling back. Any progress yet?
Yes, there were some other patches included which may have included a fix for the problem as described. The 1803 then updated successfully and no BSOD occurred on reboot.
It took over an hour to download and install on my very fast machine. On boot up it took another ~10 minutes with 3 restarts to complete - get to a login.
I also had to go through all the privacy settings, and the other settings too, again, as one does with Windows 10 and reinstate some of them that had been reset.
It put new stuff on my taskbar which I removed.
With Windows 10 I feel inclined to do a 'combat logout' just to prevent all the telemetry, AKA spying, being extracted from MY computer. All in the name of 'keeping YOU safe online'.
But I play Elite Dangerous which requires me to be online.

PC auto updated last night, completely screwed up my sound system and bass transducer... Awesome.

Haven't even tried VR yet.

That's a VERY nice setup. I too had issues with stuttering and tracking issues and the ONLY thing that solved it was a Windows 10 Refresh along with ED+Horizons. My Rig is budget but it runs VR buttery smooth with VR Medium setting (using the essential Dr Kaii Profile Editor). I've got it locked to ASW 45fps, HMD 1.25

This is all running on an i7-6700k, GTX 970 (no overclocking), 16gb RAM, SSD, All Air Cooled, 2x 1k Monitors, Hotas

This.

And it seems in my experience the more you do to postpone and delay these updates the more problems you will have after wards and along the way.

Like peeing yourself in winter in fear of the cold.

Keep your library folders on a second drive and a refresh, even a complete reformat can be done in a matter of minutes not days.

if anything quite the opposite. I am not sure if it is the windows update OR if it is the most recent nvidia drivers which finally allowed me to move from the ones last november....... but i am pretty sure performance has improved for me.

edit.... oh... so it did break stuff for you... that is a bummer. it went ok for me.
