Patch Notes Update Wings Update 1.2.06 Incoming

Is it just me that's irritated by the way EVERY SINGLE patch notification thread has a bunch of "yeah but you didn't fix THIS, did you? Hah!" posts?

Chances are the fix for "that" is either more complex or lower priority than you think - for example, your pet bug might affect only 0.1% of players, and the one they just fixed was affecting 2%, say.

Granted, it's annoying when you suffer from a so-far unfixed bug - but I assume they are all going to be fixed eventually. At least FD ARE fixing bugs. I play on other games where updates are few and far between and bugs have been present for months or even years, and where there's no real evidence that the devs listen to anything the user base says. E:D has gone from launch a few months ago through 2 version updates and each time there are regular bugfixes, also things like the re-pricing of the vulture and FdL which obviously reflected a quick action from feedback. All in all, FD are doing a pretty good job.

edit: See there's a forum bug - typing E colon D as shorthand for Elite: Dangerous creates a grinning smiley :)

Indeed. I couldn't agree more.

On top of that there are many reasons why a genuinely lower priority might make it into a patch than a genuinely higher priority one.

For example a developer might not take the "next highest bug" off the list and start working on it if they are not familiar with that area of the code, and but spot a lower priority one they know they can fix in no time. Meanwhile the developer who does know that area may have higher priority bugs to work on themselves.

A developer may fix a relatively minor bug as they come across it, while investigating a complex one that will take time to work out what's wrong or fix.

A bug may not be fixed in a patch if FD know they are shortly going to rework an area of code scheduled for a later patch.

A bug fix may depend on other fixes - which may themselves not be ready for a particular patch.

There may be technical risks associated with releasing a bug fix - FD may wish to test this against a stable build (e.g. a more major release than a minor patch branch that has other fixes being applied to it continuously).

On top of all that - software development is (in my opinion as a software developer of over 20 years) not that mature an engineering domain. We don't *really* know what the best approach is - there are many conflicting opinions among well respected and successful software engineers. In this respect it's more like, say - economics, than mechanical engineering.

FD are doing very well in my opinion. The fixes are coming fast and continuously.

(By the way - the E:D "feature" pleases me - I hope this *doesn't* get fixed).

I do have sympathy for those that experience a bug that badly impacts them - I have little trouble myself, but my brother's machine refuses to play the game for more than a few minutes before crashing - making Wings very difficult for both of us. It's very frustrating.

None of the above is meant to indicate that people shouldn't ask if a bug is being worked on - or even to post their frustration - but hopefully it gives you the idea that just because you can't see an improvement in an area doesn't mean no body in FD cares, or isn't actively working on it now.

When typing a post, you can select 'Go advanced' and tick the box that says 'Disable smilies in text' and it will stay as 'E:D'. It used to happen to me so much that I changed my profile pic as a reminder.

Also, in my Adder, there's a clipping bug so that the thick yellow target circle will be drawn on the upper half part of the horizontal window frame near the top of the cockpit.

Edit: not orbits.
And i just lost sound for the first time, at garrett station, just as station security started firing on something.

- Automated the start and end of faction states of war and election

Is 'election' some new state for factions? I know "War" has never really triggered off without intervention, but I've not heard of "Election" yet.

Still no sign of fixing the bug where you blow up an anaconda's power core but you don't get the bounty for it cuz the credit goes to the feds.

Ah - THAT explains why that happened to me last week - was wondering. And it was the first time I ever tried targeting an NPC enemy subsystem... thought I had done something wrong perhaps and just went back to stripping hulls!

New to the community (less than a week) I saw on one forum post where this CMDR had exploration data he couldnt sell and the next patch you guys fixed it. I just wanna say how impressed I am to be a part of a community/dev that actually cares about its players. Nice going Frontier.

Hi everyone,

Client Changes:

- Stability fixes for wing invites in cases where invites get through but only exist for a second

Thanks guys!

Ed

This still exists. And come some 1 clarify for me, can you only invite friends who are in the same area as you? As no matter what I can not invite my friends if we are in seperate star sustem.

good to see they've fixed the exploration data bug. I tried selling mine (only had like 3 which I picked up on the way to Jamieson station) and it was red so I couldn't sell.
