If you are doing a trade run, use the Cartographer and look at nearby systems, each system mostly will have several small docks or shipyards where you can buy goods. Then return for a quick buck.

be careful early on trying assassination missions they tend to hide the intended target in a vast system with no clues as to where to go.

You will have more fun flying a smaller ship that you can afford to upgrade to A or B rating for the most important equipment instead of flying the biggest ship you can afford with lowly E or D outfits.

When you get to a new hotel room, find a big drawer, and put all those: cushions; throws; end of bed flags, strips; adverts; do not smoke signs; eat here tonight boards; love your pillow notices; menus; great deal boards; great deal menus; understand our washing policy, and such, in that drawer.

Move the kettle, sugar, mugs, adverts for better coffee, into another drawer or shelf that is somewhere more convenient to you.

Now we have cleared some space.

Now remove all towels from the bathroom - because, if you are going to smoke in there - they will betray you. Shove these hundreds of towels on top of something neatly.

Now you have a desk to work at, and you can puff away in the bathroom. Run the shower for a few minutes, and you should be undetectable.

Hummm one bit of advice.....

Best advice i can offer is to take a deep breath, then take your time reading through this whole thread. Not every single post is helpful but many of them are. Listening to people who offer advice doesnt mean you have to take it but gives you a chance to make your own mind up.

Do NOT, pick a fight with someone bigger than you. (To the cobra who interdicted my FDL for a 6k bounty, I hope you learned this from our skirmish. [He lived, don't worry.])

When upgrading to a new ship if you don't intend to keep it always sell all the equipment just keeping the barebones. You will generally find you get a better deal.

Exercise some restraint (play fair)

If someone much smaller than you gives up half or all of their cargo after you've threatened them, don't just blow them away.

There was a YouTube link showing how classy it was to let live, but I can't find it now.

"Don't Panic" and always bring your towel

“A towel, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”

"Watch out for noob-hammers", one just got my DBE with full cargo-hold of rares.
