Newcomer / Intro Words of Wisdom (1 per account)

If you get bored of E : D, take several month off, play some other games and come back a couple of updates later. You may find your passion is rekindled (mine was).

If you are travelling to fast in SC and get the slow down warning, throttle down to 0 or to optimal speed, pitch up and down in a tight U shape and you will lose momentum and come back to a safe traveling speed without overshooting your destination

Upgrade your life support module if you want some extra time getting to a safe location when your canopy is damaged. Sometimes the standard 5 minutes is just not enough and you end up cutting it very close. Overshooting the station in super cruise can cause unwanted delays in this scenario, often times resulting in player death just seconds from safety.

Bear in mind that your cargo is not insured, it's easy to loose between 1 and almost 7 mil credits on goods alone if you are flying a trader class ship and get interdicted and destroyed.
If you are light on credits, it could be a safer bet to take smaller loads, reducing your exposure to risk till you have built up a buffer of credits to fall back on in the event of annihilation.
Never eat into your insurance fund and risk loosing your ship. If you get destroyed and loose your insurance fund that way, take a free sidewinder and store your trader ship, then grind enough credits to cover your insurance before resuming.

Always greet your fellow Commanders with cheerful confidence.

You would be surprised at how positively this actually effects the way other Commanders interact with you.

You are not your ship. You might be working on getting your ship spec'd out how you want it, but remember that it's a tool. Don't be afraid to sell your ship in favor of one that fills an immediate need if you know you can put it all back together again when you are done. Eagles, Cobras, Adders, and Vipers grow on trees. If you can't afford the insurance on your ship, swap to a Sidewinder until you can.
