Approach the game as if it is a proper and real role that you undertake in life, much like the other roles that you play, such as a work related or family related role.
BE the pilot. THINK like the pilot. ACT like the pilot. And get Voice Attack.
Great thread, much good advice, thank you all [up]
My tips are;
1) Ensure you have at least 5x the credits as your insurance cost, just to be safe. I was once killed 3 times in a row.
2) Mining can be very lucrative, but keep your eyes on your scanner looking out for pirates.
3) Get to know the different ships and which ones are more threatening.
4) The game is much more fun if you are in a wing with a friend.
I can't believe the XBox controller has the same button for boost as it does for landing gear! [wacky]
When attempting a long range mission , be sure to pack a change of clothing and some food, sandwiches are good ,as are nuts and crisps, and don't forget plenty of drinking water. Also check before you leave the station that you have actually accepted the mission , its a bit embarrassing to fly 2000 ly without your passenger.
If you also take lots of aggro when you enter a Combat Zone, deploy a heat sink and activate silent running, and leave the bubble of fighting, so you can reenter it with fewer targets on you.

No direction but a faith in her decision
No direction but to never fight her flow
No direction but to trust the final destination
