Would you burn an internal module for an SLF AI pilot?

Why would somebody want to use a slot to house an "AI autopilot" rather than just, y'know, hire & fire a rental SLF jockey when they need one?

Let's face it, the only way this'd be useful is if the A-rated AI was the equivalent of an Elite SLF jockey and that'd mean people could bypass the time, effort and (significant) expense required to train and retain an Elite NPC.
There's no way FDev are going to do that so, at best the AI's are only ever going to be the equivalent of an off-the-shelf NPC (up to Expert) which'd mean it wouldn't be worth fitting the AI module in preference to hiring/firing a rental NPC.

As I see it, the upsides are around holographic customization, tweaking behaviors to your playstyle and making money for FDEV.

If AI are spooky spooky, make them "shackled" AI like Edi, or just COVASy

I was under the impression that AI was outlawed in the context of Elite lore.

The examples of automation in Elite are purposely self contained and basic.

I mean, the "Docking Computer", while artificial, is not held up as an example of intelligence.

Is COVAS AI?

The AI module for SLFs sounds good, but you should have to learn RISC-V assembly language and code your own AI in a simulated CPU environment to use the module.

Our SLFs are essentially fancy drones that do not actually house organic pilots.

The organic pilots we hire are gimps we lock in the basement and let out once in a while. We have no control on their appearance, voice sets or combat style.

Would you burn a class 1, 2 or 3 size internal module for a computer module that houses an AI capable of flying your SLF?

This could be a real money maker for FDEV in the same way a COVAS or bobbles might be. Comprehensive voice sets, AI settings for aggression level, even customizable holographic avatar that sits on a bridge. If FDEV wants to continue to charge salary, fine, make it "maintenance costs".

I'd drop all the way up to a class 3 for these features in a heartbeat, and pay for a COVAS like voice set.

The imaner76 guide to Ship Launched Fighters.
Y = get an NPC pilot
N = sack that thing.

Are you new with your first fighter bay slot? Y
Are you not quite sure if you will survive the fight but are sure you can deploy it before death? Y
Are you above master in combat and want to be Elite some day, sooner than later? N *that thing will steal rank and... MONEY!
Are you mining and feel naked/lonely? Y
Are you exploring the galaxy? N *but you may want to take the bay so you can fly it. Exploration is like marriage. Same thing all the time even if loved is the same thing. You get to fly a fighter once in a while!
Are you Elite in combat? N *are you mad? that's a hull/module reinforcement slot.

Glad I could help.

I feel like the way you describe it makes it pay to win and I am under the impression fdev has already stated their feelings on that

No.

AI are not to be trusted, just check out all the ships destroyed by malicious docking computers or crashed when recalled to your SRV over the years.

I am still not convinced that they are killed I think they have done a runner and changed their names to escape from paying the bar bill they have been running up.
With what they charge for their services they shouldn't have any troubles paying their bar bills. The greedy moneygrubbers probably bathe in Lavian brandy!
