would you pay a subscription for ED?

I would pay £5 a month to keep it going for years.

How many players are there currently on all platforms? What would be a good projection by end of year on all platforms?
Lets say FD began to charge a 5 monthly subscription for all platforms, and half of that count left the game. I would imagine they would still be making close to a million a month at a 5 fee (200000 subscriptions)

Without regular income from existing customers, fdev has no reason to care for them.

All fdev is incentivized to do at the moment is to brring elite dangerous to one platform after other. xbox, ps3, iphone, android, windows mobile, wii, kinect, ps4.. etc etc. Being a listed company means, they have to show ever increasing profits every. Servers just cost money, new customers are the only real income for the game.

Their marketing seems to match this approach.
Their neglect of fdev store with paint jobs etc shows this as well. It simply doesn't bring in enough recurring income.
Their usual pattern of releasing broken updates and fix them slowly on the fly also shows this.
Their current style of communication with player base also show this. Single exception is Sarah and her communication about AI related news, the rest is abysmal.

This is not the first time this topic has been brought up (i believe even a mod made a poll on this during PB), the horse is dead, leave it alone. The answer is a overwhelming "No."

I expect that that would lead to not insignificant refund claims.

It could probably be argued to be a form of bait and switch.

refunds claims i expect can be worth it if you are moving to a more profitable model.
and there is possible some dirty tricks game companies can do to circumvent lawsuits too.
take age of Conan for example, they just closed it down and renamed it and said hey we got a new game for you now- Age of Conan: unchained

again note that im just playing the devils advocate here and that im just nerding like i usually do.
i am very much against a sub model unless FD deem it to be very necessary for the continuation of the Elite development.

just give me more optical stuff a gold and a silver skin for every ship nice decals .. i have spent 300$ on other games just for optical stuff.

If it meant that a client <-> server architecture would exist for core systems AND more toys with depth for the sandbox, unequivocally YES.

But as it is now? No way. Multiplayer/networking is abysmal and the game is too much of a husk for me, the entire "large as an ocean, depth of a puddle" issue.

1-I kickstarted for ELITE (125 GBP)
2-Was promised single player
3-Got forced online mode DRM instead
4-Got tacked on P2P multiplayer
5-Got broken co-op (wings)
6-Got abysmal multiplayer instancing

And you ask me if I would pay a monthly fee?

I would rather french kiss the company president of EA.

In view of recent developments and the long standing lack of developments, my short answer would be:

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL .... HA

Cheers Cmdr's

Couldn't do a poll as I'm on my phone, but there's the question, I personally would if meant to secure longevity of the game, ensuring bigger better updates, allowing the game to expand into what could be the game we want it to be, ensures costs for server maintenance etc, I would quiet happily pay a fiver a month for this, what do you reckon?

Before 1.3, sure, I'd be up for that. In its current state? Never. I'm currently paying nothing a month and still don't want to play it.

Spot on mate.

At one time (and I've said it at the time) I would have happily paid £10pm to play the game.
Right now that's changed, there's no way I'd do it.

If FD "Grandfathered" all who purchased the game as a non-sub .... then sure!

Otherwise, Bring back Offline mode. ( DOH... sorry had to go there !! )

No. I don't care how awesome a game is. I avoid subscription models like the plague, as well as anything pay-to-win or 'micro-transaction' on so-called 'free' games on mobile phones. I HATE the trend in games over the last few year that the purchase price isn't enough. It flippin' well should be. Chuck me a decent expansion in 12 - 18 months for £30 quid instead and that'll do me fine.

On a side note, I've always hated app stores showing so called free games. I think anything with in-app purchases should be in their own section (especially where in-app purchases are eventually required). Especially when you're shopping around for child/toddler specific apps, but that's another rant altogether.

In the state it is in ? Not a chance. I'm not unwilling to pay a monthly fee, but I want to get the content that justifies it. So far the game isn't good enough to warrant a monthly fee.
