would you pay a subscription for ED?

I played EVE for years, although one of the best games I've played, the inability to allow a single pilot to do anything worth while without a second sub account or be apart if a large corp ( jump 6 lys comes to mind ) killed it for me. Elite is starting off great for a new MMO. Although not having a sub worries me as far as long term life of the game, FD seems to have a great plan for the game.

Elite is the best space game I've played to date with more features to come. Future is bright.

Elite should be force players to be played in open world.
If you limit players choices....you will limit your player base....simples.
I would quite happily pay £10 to £25 for expansions but I would never ever pay for a subscription game, even if it was one of my all time favorites like Elite.
As for long term finances of FD, I would have no problems with having advertising in-game to make some extra cash, the advertising boards outside the stations and inside in the lower bowls of the stations where the ''outfitters'' is a good idea to keep the revenue up.
Just thinking.....I bet you can still get a Coco-Cola in the year 3300 so why not soft drink ads or ads for ''Nissan Star-ships'' or ''Mercedes Luxury liners''.....?

Doesn't it usually go the other way? An mmo starts off with a subscription and then becomes free. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before.

EvE is such a niche game that it fills it's role perfectly already.

However, ED as it exists right now should take a page or two from EvE just to increase the player interaction and agency. We have a persistent universe but can't influence it in any meaningful or lasting manner. This needs to change, players need to see their efforts affect the universe around them more. We don't need the incredible meta of EvE to allow for that, but we need SOMETHING.

already this happen...check pp map..and check the fliping of sys before pp come and distract the ppl ;)

you should apply for a moderator title, im sure you would be great in that role.

it might be that only us who played eve understands where the op is coming from, but that does not make it into a invalid topic.
I played EvE. Thats not what I was poking a stick at, but rather the sudden left turn this thread made towards another Open vs Solo debacle.

And I disagree with you. I would make a horrible moderator.

ah ok, sorry then, some people on this forum loves to poke sticks at eve players and that makes me naturally raise my defense.
lets try and turn the thread on track again then.
my personally opinion about the sub model is that it can be great for a game to keep going whit its development even whit a smaller user base. it has kept eve "online" since 2003 and its still going strong.
but i also think that its a great model to ensure that the user base stays small, and i think that FD is trying to aim BIG.
they want ED to be a worthy successor and let it become another classic, and if they wan't that then a sub model is not the first thing they should reach for.

Heya

Its tricky. Specially with EvE roaring the Space world for so long. Lately I came across EVE Valkyrie and and long term devs plan to merge it with EVE Online. If that is to happen. Eve will become the ULTIMATE SUPER POWA OF SPACE :O. Anyway.

The thing about Elite is that it feels very much Early Access... Here are my simple few reasons for that:

Mechanics:

There is market - but no way to research nearby markets from within my station and so on. Pain in the ass to find anything
There is black market - but I can only sell? Havent seen an option to buy anything yet.
I only have 4 slots of stuff to sell(basing on my viper ship for now)? I mean really?! This is the reason why we need bases and homes. So we can stash our battle loot from pirates we kill/other players(which we dont get by the way ! :( ) and then sell. I mean whats the point of market if we dont really have space to store it or need to sell anything? Unless you are mining which I dont see point... :( I mean its not like you can mine, and then craft a ship with CUSTOM special tributes that is unique in every way...
Insurance is too easy. Should give us at least few insirance grades 50% 75% 95% - eve has it... its more challenging this way.

Visuals:

The space is black. I mean seriously u guys made space black. I know is realistic but its . Push your environment artists further please. Create some gases, clusters of starts and other volumetric / 2d painted backgrounds so I can at least look at great ships. I mean I spend today another 10 HOURs in this game (I decided to give it another try! ) and if it was not for T/target UI. I would not even know that there was a ship in front of me. Please do brighten up the backgrounds and make them more visual. Look for example.. Eve Valkyrie... Yea I think I will be referring a lot to eve :(

Anyway regarding my original 3 posts. The questsions have been answered. Thank you all for your opinions and comments. May the em.. stars be with you...

Regards

Dariusz

I, too played eve for a long, long, time. I don't anymore.

Elite is not a true MMO, It is an online enabled Simulator. Eventually the Devs are planning on adding new content and gameplay types, such as planetary landings, and the ability to walk around your ships and stations. That is just gravy! The core of this game is you and your ship, with possibly a few good friends out in the universe.

I think by any definition it's an MMO. While you are limited to what, 32 theoretical players in the same instance, that instance has potential to shuffle amongst the thousands of connected players as you move system to system etc.. Every game limits your instance in some way from the total population. Just because Elite does it differently doesn't change it's game type.

The eve fan boys should probably cool it. Nobody wants another eve, well nobody i care about. About the only thing elite and eve have in common any more than any space combat/trade simulator game has since the release of Elite 1 is that it's multiplayer and has forums full of players who are never satisfied.

This game is still in it's infancy. It will probably evolve into something that behaves _Much_ differently a year from now. The constant requesting that things be like they are in such and such game is annoying. Elite will be different, FD has a long term vision. Hopefully they ignore the drone of noise in here so they can realize it (bug reporting aside).

With the eve fan-folk (gottaBPC!) I wholeheartedly agree. I think If they want Eve, they should go play Eve, and leave us here! :p

Ender, I think we are both saying pretty much the same thing, although I believe you are much more eloquent about it. Right On, Commander!
