wow just wow !

I love it.
I consider myself an average combat pilot at best. Have been around since the original beta 2 but never had much time to play so what I have atm is a Vulture, Master rank and about 40 mil in cash (saving for a FAS).
Played a lot the past 2 weeks and spent time at HRes and compromised nav beacons. It was too easy. Way way way too easy. Had a friend over the other day (still 1.4). Doesn't play sims. Never played ED. Took him to a high intensity RES. He loved it cause he could shoot down everything with no one ever so much as taking down his shields. Too easy by far.

Now since 2.0 I do think that AI has become somewhat better (not much though), but in combination with the higher dps loadouts you do feel the difference. And it's great. Took the Vulture to a compromised nav yesterday and had the most fun in months. Taking on a group of Vipers now actually is something you want to consider first, not blindly start shooting away at the first one.
You have to play smarter now, choose your battles more carefully, but I really fail to see how this could be considered "broken" and in need of fixing. Please don't.

I guess to the really good pilots the change doesn't amount to much, hence all the posts how it's not gotten any harder at all. But for me it's become more of a challenge now, and that's just what I'm looking for. I had to adapt, learn not to pick every fight, realise that an Anaconda with Vulture escorts is too much for me now and focus on smaller ships instead. Yes they pay lower bounties but they also blow up much quicker. I still cashed in 2 mill in maybe 30 minutes yesterday but had way more fun doing it than last weekend in 1.4 when I probably made a little more, but got bored really quickly.
I fought down an Elite FAS yesterday, and it took over 10 minutes of carefully avoiding his fire as he could blow my shields away in no time. Was one of the most gratifying and fun moments in any of my PVE fights to finally see him blow up in the end.

NPCS needed a buff. Elite NPC was so no more of threat than a master ranked one all it meant was a few more credits for the kill. if they have been buffed it will make combat more interesting.

One thing I have seen a couple of times (but only when flying in a wing), is that sometimes not all members of an NPC wing are flagged as being in the wing, so when you attack the loner, his other four mates take umbrage. It certainly adds to the spice of life, but I guess it's not to everyone's liking.

I think there are a couple of things at work here.

The npc buffs are good. I'm a newbie, been playing just over a week, but the challenge is still good. I have to work a bit for a kill on anything bigger than an Adder, but I'm not usually in serious danger unless I do something stupid.

The fact that, every now and then, I'm pushed to my limits unexpectedly, even forced to break off and run a few times now, really adds to the immersive quasi-realistic feel.

However, looking around other threads suggests that some people may be suffering from bugs, such as player shields evaporating against even basic pulse fire at an incredible speed.

So maybe people struggling should look for possible bugs, as it really shouldn't be that much harder than before.

Seems sensible. If I was a pirate and I saw a vulture turn up on my hunting grounds I would probably want myself and my mates to get rid of it asap before it started taking us down one at a time.

However, I finish work today until january and have a vulture myself so will give this a go tomorrow (unless I spend the whole day landing on planets!)

Honestly, I do not get it. Is tougher now? Yes, a bit. Unplayable? Hell, no! Quite opposite. Do you really enjoy mindless mowing stupidly stupid NPCs? So maybe you play a wrong game?
Anyway, I enjoy current changes. I am playing since May and stupidity of NPCs was really more and more annoying. Combat is my favorite part of this game and was getting really frustrated by no challenge in this department. Now I needed to adopt and it revitalized the game for me. Went to HazRES yesterday and runned away with 7% of the hull and broken canopy on my "invincible" maxed out battle conda. I casually attacked wing of 5 without checking what was in the wing. That was conda with FGSs.
Lessens learned:
- check what is in the wing. Now wings are not always big fish with small fishes. Very often it is 5 big baddies happy to toast you.
- do not ignore small fishes - they will bite you with rails in no time. Kill them first or if they are big wing wait util engaged in combat with other NPC.
- do not relay on SCB. They are not important anymore and any sense of security you may get from having big stack of SCB is false in this moment. You cannot stack them and even firing one takes more time due to a need of using heat sink. So plan using SCB ahead and not as last resort.
- NPCs are more agile and a bit smarter now, using few new tactics - boosting a lot, ramming etc.
- Choose right tool for a job. I do not get why people still consider Python as a king of a jungle. It is not, it never was. It is slow multipurpose ship with a lot of modules. Great for stacking SCBs and tanking but:a. it does not make her a combat ship, b. It is not a valid tactic anymore. I played all combat capable ships in this game and rebought many of them now. Python is only one I do not miss at all. Buy FDL instead and you are good for any fight.
- Observe and adopt or die.
- Plan ahead, use tactics, use faoff, reverse flying etc. Casual mowing is a bit tougher now.

After my wake up call with my Conda I have bought a new FDL and now happy like a puppy. Agility, speed, enough of punch, no place for more then one SCB. Simply and lot of fun! Still taking my battle conda from time to time to combat but I enjoy FDL much more.

o7.

P.S.
Plase forgive me my English - obviously I am not a native speaker.

In a CZ...

Watch for blue-line fire in the distance, from one NPC to another. Check to see if it's coming from an enemy ship. If it is, prioritise and kill it. If not, protect it.

If you're not engaged and are choosing a new target, don't just choose the closest. Cycle through a few, check the subsystems panel, and choose one with heavy weapons to exterminate.

And if you hear the sound of a railgun knocking on your shield door, put 4 pips to SYS immediately. God help you if you sit there with 4 to WEP and 2 to ENG while something's targetting you with an expensive set of fixed weapons! Shields will totally evaporate if not propped up by those SYS pips.

To the original poster of this thread.

There have been changes to the way some of the NPC's work, dont ask me what though, but some do act a bit weird, had some small pirates that have taken me by surprise and I have had to run, had some big ships like pythons and clippers that seem to freeze and just take a battering, even had some elite ships that do not return fire !

I dont know if this would help you, but, I have made a private group and have found a friend in the game to play with as a team/wing, we use skype to voice chat during game play, no typing, I have more experience in the game than my friend and I am helping him learn, if you want to join us you are more than welcome, obviously the rewards are split but I am happy to help you or anyone who wants to join in with us, just send me a PM. We are currently working in the Kremainn system. My current combat rank is Deadly and I fly a Python.

I don't think the OP is complaining about single NPC pirate skills.

He clearly states that every wanted ship in the RES opens up on him, that is an entirely different issue and sounds like a bug to me.

Someone else stated that NPC in wings are not always showing as being in a wing, that is also a bug.

The 'learn to fly' messages aren't helpful, neither are the "works ok for me" messages.

OP if it really is as you state I would raise a ticket - maybe go back in to a RES (be ready to run) and record the session or note down what happened in details if possible so the devs can have as much info as possible.

Cheers

I got my first wake up call last night. Cheekily took on an elite mk3 in my not so elite mk3... :):):):):):) had a railgun (i think at least, shields went down in one hit of someting I have not heard before). Exciting wake up call none the less! I consider myself to be a relative modest combat pilot but these changes are realyl going to help me get that much better. It's not called Elite Dangerous for nothing!

Yes I had that happen to me during the beta. Went to a combat zone in a Fully "A" rated Federal Corvette with full hull reinforcement fitted in every slot except the shields, to try it out. Every ship in there was flying in formation not firing on each other for several minutes. I figured that was weird, so decided to fire on one of them.....every single ship turned red and opened fire on me. Every single one. Was very impressed how the corvette handled this massive attack. Managed to take down a couple of ships and still managed to get away with 25% hull. Maybe that bug carried over from the beta.

Yeah im only getting this problem when NPC's have more than 1 railgun. i really dont care if an NPC has 100000 railguns on his ship. but at least give him power draw and heat damage and ammo, and not super-human accuracy.

IS it me or is the game unplayable now? I cant do anything in my vulture now. I run from every fight <what> is going on? I am also getting every ship attack on spot now in resource zones? used to scan and leave when I had no cargo now I get attack by Every pirate once engaged with one? anyone know what going on here? and please trolls leave the l2p crap at home. there something wrong with npc now
thank you

Wow! that's terrible man! I will stop playing too just in case you're right!

:)

L2P comments don't help, but "works ok for me" comments do, because they confirm that what he is experiencing is not universal and therefore probably a bug rather than a new and intended Elite: Dark Souls mode.

if the problem is all the pirates in the res attack then check your Rep with that faction, the same thing happened to me, i bounty hunted so much that the faction started shooting me on sight.

when it happened to me i didn't hold my breath till Frontier did as i asked,... i just went to another system

NPCs needed the skill boost. I'm sure some people (farmers) love to zone out and watch as NPCs belly roll or sit stationary in space or smash into asteroids but I'm not one if them.

I don't think they've gone far enough and NPCs are still not dangerous enough.

Well speaking for myself, running a well documented AMD "solution".. it's certainly not the smooth game play I was used to. Wouldn't say unplayable, but close. Hopefully they'll work out a fix for the stu-stu-stutter rap soon.

Horizons has a 20fps drop compared to normal game (40-45 vs 60)

and supercruise still has AMD bug... drops to 40, 30, 15 fps after time...
