Newcomer / Intro YEEEHAW!

Hi all

This is my first thread.

First things first: I wish to thank the developers, from the bottom of my heart, for their attention to astronomical detail. I really appreciate what you have done!

I'm an Oculus user and this "game" is probably the most immersive VR experience I've had so far. I'm also an amateur astronomer, and being able to fly up "close" to a neutron star has been on my bucket list for many years.

Also getting to old for fighting, I love the way the ED Universe works and that you can choose to be exactly what you like, while still having to face the consequences of your choices. That makes this sandbox very "close to reel life", in combination with the politics, background stories, laws, culture, etc. I started out (a couple of weeks ago) by hauling passengers in a Dolphin and then switched to longer adventure trips because they paid better, and I was greedy to get my hands on a better ship. Ended up with a max'ed out ASPX, still having even more fancy toys on my wish list. The adventure trips triggered my hunger for exploration, and I decided to go on a long trip into nowhere, but got the space noia half way towards my goal, and had to go back to good old safe Sol. The soundscape in ED is as good as the visuals, and the soundtrack makes you feel that you're in a movie.

Yesterday I bought a small DBX and set it up getting a max jump range over 41ly. Then I set out towards NGC 7822. I will not spoil anything, but just say that anyone should make that trip at least once during their lifetime. It's so BEAUTIFUL!

The DBX is an excellent little explorer, and like the ASPX I love the cockpit view, which is perfect for VR. I'm still longing for the looks of a Mamba, but that will probably end up parked in a hangar somewhere, and only be used for the occasional Sunday strolling around. You do not need the fancy ships to have fun in ED.

The depth of ED is mindblowing. Once you start feeling slightly bored about something a new experience makes your jaw hit the floor. There are so many things I haven't tried yet...

Once again, thanks for an awesome job, and an awesome experience!

Stay safe out there

Welcome to the forum, glad you're enjoying the game.

ED in VR is amazing to say the least. :D

Welcome! \o/

1/. Best game ever.[yesnod]
2/. Y'all need to stop talking about VR.:(

The sound track - yes an under appreciated gem! - I bought the CDs ripped them to mp3 on my mobile and spent a year listening to them on my drive to work almost every day.

Really effective to keep you calm on the drive. (of course not the Combat & Extras CD, but the Exploration and Frameshift & Starports CDs)

Welcome to the game, and the forums! ED is a huge and wonderful game, you're in for a long and exciting ride.

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

Good to hear you're having such a good time in the game. Fly safe.

Welcome! and I totally agree, once you see a neutron star or the artificial lights of an Earth-like planet from the dark side and a star in the distance being slowly eclipsed by the planet... there is no turning back, we'll come back to this game forever.

........ the artificial lights of an Earth-like planet from the dark side ........

I always circle earth-likes in the hope of seeing night-time lights but of course have never done so. I mean out beyond the bubble, not inhabited systems.

P.S. Welcome Morten

P.S. Welcome Morten

That would be awesome, being 25,000 ly from the bubble, new brand system, honk with the FSS, fell the joy of finding a highly valuable Earth-like go there to surface-map it and then, out of nowhere LIGHTS! If that ever happens, the commander that does it is going to be the luckiest commander ever. The tinfoil hats looking for Raxxla will evacuate bricks.

Welcome from me, too.

And extra bonus points for seeking out NGC 7822 on purpose - usually, people only know what NGC 7822 is after they asked the question "What is that?", seeing that strange line in the sky.

As for fighting: no, you're not. Check out the Fighter Club if you manage to be online during GMT evenings.

Welcome to the game. Nice to see many of the recent newcomers appreciating the unprecedented galactic sim achievement of ED. There's really plenty more depth than those cursory remarks and naysaying of reviews past.

I've driven with the CD music on too! I agree, it's really a great game music score, maybe even one of the best ever composed in the spacesim genre. I'd wish someday Frontier would contract the composer to write more supercruise tracks which currently are only the seven in the "frameshift suite". (The X franchise games' seta-cruising music suite had expanded to over 30 tracks or so) There could be more supercruise tracks written based on themes of more of the other constellations..

Thank you all [noob]

Here is a black hole from out here. They are normally hard to see, but there was a small black spot in the background nebula, and aligning the camera, I could amplify it using the gravitational lensing of the black hole. This game is far better than any other game I've tried:

It would be easier to recognize if you call it The Pillars of Creation or at least Eagle Nebula.

Fight(er) Club :D I've actually been thinking about getting a bit better at defending myself and my now beloved Diamond Back. What an fine little ship. Before I go fighting (back), I need some more practice though. I'm almost at the point where the controls and the physics of the ship is becoming second nature now. Might also need to refit some hardpoints and a shield generator...

Yesterday, while flying back towards civilization to cash in the data, I couldn't help thinking how much the experience of the adventure game had developed since Adventureland on the VIC-20.

I'm normally not much of a gamer, but there has been a few pinnacles on the way. When I got Wolfenstein 3D, I sat down and played it to the end, without leaving the computer, ending up with pretty sore shoulders. Then there was Duke Nukem, where you could "shoot at anything". F-22 Raptor was great fun when you connected two PCs using a RS 232 cable. Then you could dogfight against a friend. Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed got me my first racing wheel. I mean, it was completely like driving a real car, if you added a tiny bit of imagination

ED is the pinnacle of the pinnacles so far. And I don't have to use my imagination to fill in the blanks anymore.

Sorry but you are a bit mixed-up. The Eagle Nebula is NGC 6611 or better known as Messier 16 (M16) - it is in the constellation Serpens whereas NGC 7822 is to be seen in the constellation Cepheus. You are probably confusing the "Elephant's Trunk Nebula" (in Cephus) with the "Pillars of Creation" due to the unfortunate use of the term "Elephant's Trunks" to describe certain types of astronomical formations.
