Newcomer / Intro YEEEHAW!

Sorry but you are a bit mixed-up. The Eagle Nebula is NGC 6611 or better known as Messier 16 (M16) - it is in the constellation Serpens whereas NGC 7822 is to be seen in the constellation Cepheus. You are probably confusing the "Elephant's Trunk Nebula" (in Cephus) with the "Pillars of Creation" due to the unfortunate use of the term "Elephant's Trunks" to describe certain types of astronomical formations.

Correct you are.

I'm able to navigate the night sky seen through a telescope from Earth, but finding my way around out there in ED is a totally different story.

OT: Thrustmaster pedals are in the mail. Can't wait to see if my legs move in the VR cockpit. The hands on the HOTAS moving in sync with your "real" movements are just one of those small details that add up [where is it]

 oh you are completely right, I mixed them up bad. Thanks for the correction.

There was an option somewhere to "Show Constellations" - I don't know if it is still there or what. I think I tried turning it on yonks ago but couldn't see anything added to the galaxy map and have never bothered since.

I've been thinking about going back to Sol, looking at the sky from Earth, to see if it (hopefully) resembles what I know from astronomy. When you stand here on Earth and look at Orion, I always dream about just taking of, and going in a straight line to Betelgeuse. I've been trying to image its disc, since it is the only star big and close enough. That's difficult! Now I can just go there and have a look at it in VR. Sweet! :)

Right now I'm fine tuning my Mamba for "exploring" together with the engineer with the strange voice. Stripped down to the skeleton with a modded FSD and a 5A fuel scoop, skimming the corona fits the title of this thread. It's like a giant roller coaster. Full throttle, aim for the spot where your brows turn into smoke while scanning the system, aim for the next star using the radar, wait til the scooped star goes from red to yellow, enable FSD, and... Bang!. It can get pretty zen-like after a few hundred jumps. Hypnotic.

Does anybody know if someone has taken a Mamba to Sag A* ? I have room for an extra fuel tank, but i eats me jump range, unless I keep the tank half empty, and that's kind of same-same. I can get a steady jump range of 28 ly. Is that enough?

Cruise safe :)

Thank you all [noob]

Here is a black hole from out here. They are normally hard to see, but there was a small black spot in the background nebula, and aligning the camera, I could amplify it using the gravitational lensing of the black hole. This game is far better than any other game I've tried:

Welcome Commander. Just remember not to drink the Kool Aid and you'll be just fine----

*is witnessing what appears to be an exotic segment of the universe high on crack*

nvm.

Welcome to the best game in the world (galaxy).

You may be disappointed to find that your virtual legs don't move even if you have real life pedals. When you move the pedals your in game Cmdr just twists the joystick.
Personally I would rather see pedal movement, but it is a very minor complaint.
Having said that, having used pedals for years I wouldn't play without them now. Flying is just much more intuitive (especially if you've played flight sims) and easier.

YES!!!! I'm approaching 3 years into the game and JUST started playing in VR. Picked up a Vive for Christmas and its changed the whole game for me. It's amazing!

Yep. Much has been said and written about VR, but it's really hard to comprehend until you try it. It's not even enough to have a demo of VR in a store. You need to wear the headset for some time before the true immersion sets in.

I know some of the people at my University tries to figure out the mechanism behind this. It seems that once your brain gets divergent inputs from your senses, like from your sense of balance, your eyesight and your hearing, it get's confused (who wouldn't ?) and then it locks out the senses that doesn't fit the brains overall perception of place, time etc. The eyesight overrules the other senses a lot, and the 3D of VR combined with the head movement tricks the brain so much, that after a while (15-30 min) it just let's go of whatever doesn't fit. Then you are pretty much "there".

A headset is not very comfy, but in spacesimulators and for simracing, it could resemble wearing a helmet. Personally I use Oculus, but Facebook sux. Next headset will be something else. 4K would be a nice upgrade to next gen VR, but I've noticed the longing for higher resolution and faster rendering since doing my earliest "3D graphics" on a C64. We are getting there.

ED in VR is a must. I'm not telling people to sell their kidneys, but if I personally had to choose, I would pick VR any day. (Not really, but close).

I can live with the fact that my legs don't follow the the pedals, but I strongly expect it to be fixed in the next update ;) The pedals has a learning curve, and I locked the Hotas Yaw, but still twist the stick, and then go "ah, use the feet". It'll get second nature like everything else. Next investment will be a large subwoofer to replace the swivel, legs and wheels of my gamer chair. I can't believe that no one has made a rotation lockable gaslift. That might not be a giant market, but at least there is no competition.

Welcome CMDR WeComeInPeace!

As an explorer, you might like to take advantage of ARC's escort service for homecoming explorers. If you have no cargo on board, NPCs will normally not attack you, still it has been seen to happen occasionally. Some daredevil explorers fly in open mode, in which case we strongly suggest some security. There are human players who might blow you up for no reason but the lols.

The proceedings are, we meet you at the edge of inhabited space, wing up with you, and safely see you home until your data is sold. If you wish (this is by no means a must!) you may in return sell your data at one of our systems to help out our BGS work.

By the way, we are also the guys who run the Fighter Club ;). It is mostly a pure fun activity, however we might be able to show you a trick or two, or help you with your ship loadout.

Generally speaking, we are a bunch of mostly well seasoned guys representing a nice couple of years of E: D experience, and always happy to help out new commanders. Feel free to visit us on Discord (link in signature).

Fly safe, CMDR!

Thanks mate! Excellent idea. So far I've only been playing in Solo, but I still get intercepted by pirates. So far I just escape them, but they are annoying to the point where I've considered mounting a huge hardpoint on my Mamba and give them a proper fight. On the other hand, I'm not doing too well in the Combat Training, so maybe I'm just getting too old for the necessary reflexes. Also using the Mamba for exploring only "works" if you slim it a lot.

That said i love the Mamba. For someone who has serious philosophical issues with the term "aesthetics" I hate to say it, but the Mamba is just strikingly beautiful. Secondly it just goes like it's been shot straight out of a canon. Doing travel the fastest possible way might not be the Mamba' strongest side, but I think a have learned a few tricks to make it jump decently, and even though we are trying to minimize the amount of jumps from A to B, the trip is what the whole experience is all about for me anyways. As long as I don't run out of gasoline I'm just fine with the jumping. Yesterday I did a small test and found that I, without any problems, could travel 1200ly in less than an hour, while having so much fun that the tears of joy inside my Oculus made it difficult to see clearly. On the other hand it solves the dry eyes syndrome.

Btw. I have some friends sharing an old MZ motorcycle called the "Eisenschwein" :)

Some of the training, especially the Advanced Combat, is based on the old idea that training should be tougher than the real thing. In the case of the Advanced Combat many have never mastered it and have still gone on to Elite status in combat in the game. So don't assume your combat skills are necessarily that bad.

... so maybe I'm just getting too old for the necessary reflexes.
I don't think so. We (the ARC) represent many if not all shades of grey, and believe me we are doing quite well at combat
So, don't be shy, give it a try! :)
