You Know You're A Real Explorer When...

as you said, that is real fast, and at this point, it's not exploring, it's marathon-style racing...

Just because a CMDR goes out into the black at breakneck speed does not mean that they have to return at that same speed. About 96% of the credits I've earned can be traced either directly or indirectly to the A* challenge - and almost all of that DIDN'T come from the trip there. I would race to Sadge, take a selfie or two, go down to the neutron star fields for awhile, then make it back to inhabited space anywhere from a few weeks to a few months later, some 100 million credits richer.

Some tackle the A* Challenge just to race, or for recognition, or to test oneself. That said, the A* Challenge is incentive to go out into the black. What they do once they get there is up to that individual commander. Every CMDR faces a choice upon completion as to how to get home - hurry back, self-destruct, or explore and take the long way home. I know one CMDR who raced out to A* back in May - and is still out in the black, taking time to scan interesting systems. In short, it's not just 'marathon-style racing'. For some, it is the start of an exploration mission.

...when the first and automatic thing you do is honk the Space Horn after jumping into a system - even if that system is in the inhabited bubble and is already explored/known and your ship already has every system body in its database ;)

Exploring a destination requires travel. What's more exciting?

  1. [*=1]Exploring your local region to find a good foreign restaurant.
[*=1]Traveling to a foreign land to eat like a native?
While I enjoy both, I find that option 2 is my answer for the "more exciting" question; and that requires spending time in travel mode. It's all about prioritizing and optimizing your time.

  • You can explore while you travel and have a steady, low-key experience. (And that's fine.)
  • You can split your time between travel and exploration and have a high-impact experience at your chosen destination.

When you heart rate doubles because you see another ship on the radar.

When you look at the slot of a space station and think how the hell do I fit through that.

When you start calling your friends, relatives, kids, pet dog, cat, fish names like.....GRB 090423, ULAS J1120, Canopus, Altair, Regulus, Deneb and so on and so forth..

When you're sat in traffic on the M25 and you think:
'Now, see? This is why I go exploring'.

It then takes a few seconds for you to think 'wait, what?'

When you realize that traveling several tens of kLy in outer space with close binary encounters, neutron stars or TT fool scoopings is still many times less dangerous than the 200 Ly through civilized space on your return :)
