Your done a great job ED VR programmers, but!

G'day all,
I am using the Oculus Rift (OR) CV1(consumer version 1).
I must say that I am impressed with the latest offering of the V.R. programme for us users of V.R, the programmers have imho done a great, no have done a fantastic job.

I must say that I have not experienced god rays, the ocular separation has not produced a marked barn door and the clarity and focus of the latest headset CV1 is second to none.

The immersive experience is incredabul, from realising how big the Anaconda is, from being able to get out of ones seat and walk around the bridge, to being able to appreciate the scale and grandeur of the planets. Flying and travel are now a pleasure, but..

E.D VR developers;
have you tried to use the Galaxy and Systems map?

The fact is that one has great difficulty;
in getting the cursor to land on the correct planet to set a course and great difficulty in setting the destination on the systems map. Taking the headset off and trying to do so is no better as the cursor still has the same problem of locking onto it's target.

The fact is it's totally frustrating in it's difficulty;
for example, I was dropped out of frame-shift drive by being too near a sun, you should try to set up a new destination while wearing the O.R. It took me so long that the NPC's appeared and were having a ball at my expense while I dithered and farted about trying to get the cursor to lock onto anything so I could get away

Please ED VR programmers,
seeing you have done such a great job of bringing our experience up to this stage of immersive enjoyment, would you not try the Galaxy and System map yourself to get a handle on the problem and then could you PLEASE spend a bit of time in making it work properly for us VR users?

I am fortunate that I have two P.C.'s and have ED on both. The other day, because of this mapping problem, I travelled to the Alien ruins on one PC, and when I got there switched over to the other for the Oculus experience.

This mapping problem has been around for a while now and I don't believe I am alone in lodging this cause for concern with you. VR will only get bigger and you will have a increasing player base using VR, players who will rave about one of the best immersive game-plays in today's market, but will NOT UNDERSTAND why you don't attend to the mapping problem.

Kindest regards

The problem is you're trying to use the mouse. Don't use the mouse.

What controller do you have? I started with a logitech extreme 3d, but upgraded to an X-55 for the extra buttons and hat switches which make things much easier in VR. Only time I need the keyboard is the system search field and to press esc when I quit the game. I never use the mouse.

For the galaxy map I have the stick mapped to pan camera, twist to rotate camera and one hat switch for tilt and zoom. To navigate the menus etc I use the same controls as I do on the side panels, which is a hat switch for left/right/up/down, a button to switch tabs and fire button to select. If you don't have a joystick/hotas with enough controls you could use an xbox controller or other gamepad for menu and galaxy map navigation.

Only part that's a bit fiddly is typing. I wish there was an option to pop up an on screen keyboard for the system search field.

Here's a video about using the xbox controller for it

I still navigate in the galaxy and system maps with the mouse. It still works fine - for gross or large-scale navigation.

When you need to plot an actual system, you just have to zoom in enough to get the little blue stalks that tie the stars to their 'blue shadow' on the grid plane visible. Which means almost all the way in (I use the mouse wheel; nice and fast).

I do have pan left/right and forward/back on my HOTAS, so I can get the blue selection circle to nail the star shadow, and that will usually pop up the little selection window with the 'Route-To' button.

One annoying thing is that there's no warning "Under Attack!" when you're in the system or galaxy map... I nearly lost my Annie to a gunship... popped out of the map to find myself on 60% hull.

Firstly, Spork and Red Raven,
thankyou for the hints and methods you are using to navigate the Galaxy and System maps, I will try and adopt some of the hints you both have provided.

ArachAu,
Crikey mate you must be brilliant as it would seem that you are having no problems at all navigating the Galaxy and System maps in VR, care to share how your overcoming these minor problems.

I would not call my thread a "whinge" perhaps it would be fairer to call it constructive criticism. Every facet of this game has problems and many of them have been fixed after having attention drawn to them.

Firstly;
The point of my thread is to illustrate what I am finding difficult to do in VR and to enquire if others are having the same problem. In the same breath I hope that the ED developers read the forum and if there is enough constructive criticism of a problem that they will set aside some time to see if the problems confronting many of us can be solved.

Secondly;
By telling other forum members where I am having difficulty, I hope (as has been done here) that some one will provide me with a workable solution for the time being.

In the past every time I express a problem I have been amazed and grateful to the lister who make up this forum for providing me with a workable solution, as was done when I was having great difficulty setting up my rift.

yours aye

The whole thing is, VR generally is not doing well when using mouse and kbd. Next to the vr glasses you now really need a decent controller. I have an X52-pro and got no major issues navigating the maps (not that there wasnt room for improvements, but I only need to have my hands on kbd/mouse when searching a system or labeling a bookmark). My button setup is similar to the one explained above. Works well.

@Gaffa - are you using a Hotas? I have the X-52 with pretty much stock bindings, and once I discovered that the right thumb button is the one you use the move the plane vertically, in conjunction with the thruster hat on the left stick, I pretty much can do everything except the system typing. Bookmarks for your home system, or handy res/cz also helps. For missions I use the 'Show Galaxy Map' option to auto-locate the map. Ok, it's not as quick as 2D+mouse, particularly when in the system view, but for 99% of the time I can get by without kb.

Luckily the CV-1 has that gap below the nose which just about let's you see a kb on your lap. But yes - it would be great to have a virtual kb option to toggle. That, plus an accelerator toggle/hold for navigating the cursor in-system.

@Gaffa
As Spork and Wood67 have said, trying to use the same input method for the galaxy map and system map that you use on a monitor in VR is doing things the hard way IMO.
If you have a joystick or HOTAS setup, you are better off mapping the map controls to that.
I have an X55 with the pan controls mapped to a hat switch, rotate mapped to the joystick yaw, the up/down and zoom controls mapped to throttle toggle buttons and the menu's mapped to another hat switch.
It does take a little while to get used to the different controls, but I can happily zoom around the map in VR just as well as I did before on the monitor.

I agree, don't use the mouse. Use your controller. The hardest thing is navigating in the three dimensions. Select planets lower (or higher) until you are aligned with the system you want to select. Once you get used to it it's not a bad way to navigate the map.
