Yes, absolutely true, wireframe is the one. My vote, for emotional reasons.

I really wondered how close my imagination during playing the wireframe Elite was to the later ones. What I mean is, sure the frames were just filled, but it felt like I never played anything else! Weird, hugh?

well well , I would say Frontier.And on amiga.Why? Great flying control, real fun, funny bugs (the negative gems value route)..Elite had another plus.. freaking imagination needed! and from it, would come the distant spaces, fights with pirates, more than one ship during fights...But Frontier, well, it got all my time.
Even tried to hex-translate it in italian, with messy results

FFE for me, but thats JJFFE really, as it fixed just about everything.
If it were just from the original releases, then I would pick uk release of Frontier Elite2 with the wormholes

It's always got to be FE2 for me - it always felt like it was 'right' - it wasn't reaching for what wasn't quite possible. It was clever without losing ground to the inability for technology to support the imagination.

Thought I would resurrect this old poll of mine since we have had a healthy influx of new members joining the forum and yes there isn't an Elite Dangerous option (yet). So, over to you long time and new "Elite" fans, which was your favourite? :smilie:

Frontier for me. If I could pick Pioneer I'd go for that because it really wants to add more depth to the game and is perhaps an example of a Special Edition that would/could/should have been released years ago.

I voted for FFE,
but Oolite would come a very close second for me (sorry DB !)
Why ? well Oolite kept interest in Elite (albeit a new version) going for 25 years and counting.
Plus it has the ability to add mods, something I'm sure DB & IB would have envisioned for Elite if it were possible in 1984.
For me Oolite is the game Elite should have been.

It's Oolite. It was not possible for David and Ian to do this in 1984 so if we are speaking only REAL ELite versions then I would say ELITE for me.

I voted 'Later Elite Versions'. I love original Beeb Elite and I played the Amiga version a fair amount as well but the one I keep coming back to time and time again is ArcElite.

For Me none of them. Because I did not have played any of them. Not interrested in old games. No retro gamer. Look only into the future and play what fresh out now.
So if Elite D... Would be a decent game that would be my favorite even if it has some flaws.

It's Oolite. It was not possible for David and Ian to do this in 1984 so if we are speaking only REAL ELite versions then I would say ELITE for me.

From what I've played so far, I like Oolite - but I was a bit disappointed to find that they haven't included the Solar System in it for some reason. The combat in Oolite is tons better than Frontier - I really wish it had Track IR support!

Some of the mods make it look beautiful, but there are also some problems:

With the extra star density mods for example, it's really hard to find where the space station is so you can fly towards it. This would be a non-issue if there was a way to have text overlays on planets/stations as you can in Frontier - is there a way to do that in Oolite?
