Or years even! :D But belated thanks for your votes gunbladelad & nOmArch

It was only a few months dormant when I voted, lol. I do agree that the announcement of Elite IV was a good time to revive the topic though - especially with all the fresh interest the forum's getting as a result. It also means you'll get a wider variety of results than you would off just us "old sweats".

I voted for FE2.. It was a tough choice but ultimately it is the version of Elite that I have spent most hours playing. I played the c64 and Amiga versions of Elite extensively though, gaining "Elite" status in both :)

I still have the Amiga Format/CU Amiga magzines at home with all the previews of Frontier: Elite 2 and I remember calling the local computer games shop every couple of weeks to see if the game had been released. After months and months of waiting, one Saturday morning my Dad came home from work (he was on a nightshift) with a brand new boxed copy of Frontier: Elite 2 for me which he had picked up on the way home :)

Suffice to say the whole weekend was spent exploring the new universe. I even went to the newsagent and bought some plastic protective book sleeves for the manual and novellas inside.

I still have my Amiga and that copy of FE2 - I actually booted it up a few months ago and was very glad that the original disks are still readable.

(I still have the c64 and Amiga boxed versions of Elite too, one of which David has very kindly signed for me :) Oh, and the original Frontier Elite 2 t-shirt that you could send off for!

Now thats what you call a first post :D

Not that I'm jealous of the signed copy in any way......

Welcome to the forum Simon.:D

What an amazing post Simon.

and now you see David on a daily basis and work with him. What an honour.

It was very kind of David to sign your copies. I hear he is very kind with fans.

I spent the most time on Frontier. It was flawed, but it was essentially a logical extension for the time of what we had with Elite, and quite mindblowing in some ways.

I did play the 48k spectrum and 32k BBC versions though (at home and at school respectively).... and I do have very fond memories of Elite on the Atari ST - seeing 'solid' ships for the first time!

I voted for Frontier because that was my first Elite game and it blew me away. I honestly can't remember which I played more though Frontier or First Encounters. But I remember sitting at an ice planet, Ross starport I think it was, watching the gas planet rise over the horizon in Frontier and that has stayed with me forever.

Hi Kipper & nats
Thank you both for your votes!
The speccy version of Elite was my first contact with the series! ;) It played so smoothly too

Anyways, yes nats that image of the gas giant rising over the horizon of Merlin was unforgettable.

I wouldn't count out the others just yet Spacegamer. Not with all the new folks joining the forum, but your correct ,it does seem to be FE2 that's taking a clear lead.

It was Elite on Amiga for me.
I played Elite original wireframe one on a cousins BBC model B. And Elite on my own Spectrum and CBM 64. But the best version of the standard Elite for me was on my Amiga. Filled 3D gfx! Awesome.

 TJ, whatever could you mean? :D;)

I think the poll would be more informative if all Elite-likes and all Frontier-likes were merged.

That might be a good idea DraQ but it would require admin access to do it. Maybe one of the mods could tweak it?

Oh, and thanks for the votes everyone, looks like Frontier is romping away from the pack now with wireframe and FFE neck and neck. Maybe I should have got a job on a race course

I went for the original because at the time there was nothing else like it.

I would've been 10 in 1984! I just remember playing endlessly for hours.

I upgraded to an Amiga and bought the game again. That was a great conversion, but there was something about those wireframe graphics!

I didn't play Frontier as much as Elite, as I was getting older and gaming in general took a bit of a back seat.

In addition I wasn't really a great fan of the Newtonian physics as I found combat wasn't fun. I know it wasn't all about the combat but I was a dirty pirate on Elite and missed those exciting skirmishes!

There are quite a few "wireframe" fans on here so you are not alone Darth Revan, and (as it has always been with this poll) "Wireframe" is matching FFE vote for vote :)

And...@Draq
I can now edit the poll, but as many have already voted, I decided to leave it as is.
