Hardware & Technical Your Game System Spec

I'm working on getting a surround monitor system set up. A row of three, with one on top 22" 1680/1050 monitors running off a (for now) GTX580, and in the future I'll be sorting out two more GTX580's for SLI.

Brian :)

Mine has blue lights too, they're really nice aren't they. The case on mine is grey though, but the lights are blue. Actually it only has one blue light, but I might get another :D

Oooh very tasteful and understated.

Mine even has a nice sliding-out cup holder !

Now that's just showing off. I need to upgrade, can you get them with a blue light also?

You might be better off selling the GTX580 while you can still get something for it, and going for a GTX670/680. They can run 3 monitors in Surround + 1 accessory display on a single card, plus you've also got the option of adding a second card for performance later on. The 580 can't do that unfortunately :(

I'm considering getting a ThinkPad Helix in mars to replace the computer I have now (a ThinkPad T61)

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/06/lenovo-thinkpad-helix-official/

I wonder if the Core i7 version vill have enough power for making E:D playeble on it. The Helix will feature the ivy bridge versions and the standard Intel HD4000 graphics... So that tech is almost a year old already. But I won't care about high graphic settings and things like that... as long as the game makes at least 25fps at lowest graphics settings I'm happy. Most games I play is on Amiga. And there you won't get more than 25fps anywhere... so I'm quite used to that frame rate. (I hardly see any difference at higher frame rates anyway... Above 50fps is totally wasted on me) And graphics is i.m.o. the least important feature of a game.

Amiga 500+ with 1.5 megs of RAM and a 4 GIG SCSI hard drive :p

Choose your weapon! ;)

Too late already ordered the Triplehead2go from ebay, :( Still, I can sell that and my GTX580 at any time...

My current system

CPU: Intel Core i7 3930K OC to 4.5GHz
Memory: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LP
Mainboard: Asus Sabertooth X79
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 680
Storage: 128gb SSD for OS
512gb SSD for games
4 x 1tb sata in raid 0 for general use
4tb sata for backup
Monitor: Dell U2711 27" 2560 x 1440

I have a problem where if there is an empty slot that something can be plugged into it bugs me.:) If the case has 5 hard drive bays then it would be rude not to fill them :) That's why I have an old GTS 250 in my case as a dedicated PhysX card even thou I don't play any game that use it. But there was a gap that had to be filled.

I think I've got a year to build a new one.. There's a long list of what mine won't play like:
Need for speed most wanted
LOTRO
World of Tanks
Black Ops

Because I have:
Compaq cq50
3gb ram
2ghz something processor
1tb drive
standard graphics and other stuff

Heck mine won't even run win8 because it won't do the resolution!

At the moment its a funny Amd based rig. Phenom II 1090 @ 4Ghz, 16Gb ram, 4 60Gb SSDs in Raid 0 and 4 1Tb HDDs in Raid 5 hanging of a LSI 9240 controller. Graphics handled by an AMD 6970 onto a 24" 1920x1200 screen. Psu is Be quiet 650 and the whole lot is cooled by 2 rads, one is 360mm, the othe 240mm, dual DDC Ultra pumps and 11 120mm fans. All the water blocks are by EK. Case is a fullsized Lian-Li A70F. Keyboard, mouse, CH Products Hotas and a TrackIR.
And its near enough silent :)

Nada, my computer is so old junky and weak it couldn't power a horse and buggy. I plan to get a new one before then, this is my work laptop.

For those of you thinking about upgrading may i suggest a company that has second to none after sales service and build your own PC options and they have pretty good prices.

over the past 15 years of PC gaming the last 3 PC have all been from here.
they all have a free two year warranty and free delivery and pickup

http://www.powerc.com/

what ever you do Dont buy from Currys PCWorld because they will sell you a overpriced brick.

Amen bro, I have a powerpc machine!

Glad someone has sence to use Powerc.

When I last used PowerC I custom built mine using their options, then after i gave them a call and got them to change the MB and a few other things,
they are very flexable so much so that you can contact them with your own specification and they will build it.

he wrote powerc... Not PowerPC. I guess powerc is some kind of computer parts reseller. PowerPC is a CPU architecture.

But I also have two PowerPC devices. I don't use either of the. One is a gen1 12" PowerBook G4... From the time I still used OSx privately .... And the second one is a cyberstorm-PPC board that just sits in my drawer. I already has CS060mkII in my A4k. So I don't see the reason to start messing around in it just to put in a PPC that I'll never use anyway.

Do game developers use current top specifications of machines to build games or do they anticipate what will be available at release?

If the later, how do they make a game to use hardware that isn't available yet?

I would have thought that those of you with current top spec machines will have no trouble with the game on release, even with graphics, etc. set to top settings.

JFK - I think sometimes developers get access to new hardware ahead of the general public so they can make use of them. Frontier have always said they will make the game scalable so it weill play on a variety of specs. Best advice to anyone thinking of upgrading for this game is to wait until nearer the release date as technology moves quickly and prices usually come down.

I will be waiting a bit more before upgrading my current computer, perhaps late 2013 or early 2014. I have had the current one few years now and it is still working as a charm, not really having a reason to upgrade, been playing few games without problems. There will always be coming new processors, graphics cards etc. every few months so waiting for eternity for the "next" is not a very good option either. Latest upgrade was graphics card and SSD drives that I will be transferring to new "spec".

I think the need to upgrade was one of the things that turned a lot of people away from PC's and onto consoles. Consoles stay the same for 10 years + but in that time PC's have changed hugely.
