Hardware & Technical Your Game System Spec

My new build will be

I'm building new machine this summer in readiness for ED

ASUS P8Z77-V LX2 Motherboard
Intel i5 or maybe i7
32 GB DDR3 (as fast as I can afford - probably 2133MHz
New Graphics card - not sure yet but approx £400 worth - any suggestions?
new HDMI Monitor to replace my old banger - again probably spend more than i need to.

This is my first new build since my last one in 2006 so It will be a keeper for the next 5-6 years.

Junglebiscuit, that looks like a nice system with one very important exception...

Please PLEASE buy a quality PSU, I implore you. A cheap no-brand PSU rarely delivers the promised performance and is vastly more likely to fail. When a PSU fails there is a strong chance of it causing significant damage to the rest of your hardware.

Since you've shelled out for good quality components elsewhere in the system PLEASE consider investing similarly in your power supply.

Look at products from Enermax, BeQuiet, Seasonic, OCZ, Zalman, Akasa, XFX just to name a few.

You'll pay quite a lot more than the ~£30 that the EZcool costs (I would expect ~£90 upwards) but it's a critical system component that is often overlooked!

Thanks for the tip - I shall look into other options, was looking at a Corsair one previously, perhaps thats the way to go!

Currently the AMD 7970 based cards are the fastest single GPU cards you can get and are around your price range. nVidia GTX680 are almost as quick generally, and perform better with certain titles. 7970 tends to fair better at very high resolutions due to its wider memory bus.

Why so much RAM?

GFX cards

I presume that Elite: Dangerous will use DirectX, yes? Thing is, if it were to use OpenGL, then I think nVidia cards definitely have the edge on AMD. Not that I'm an expert, of course.

i read somewhere earlier that the engine the game runs on uses both - don't ask me where though.

Since they making a Mac version you can be quite sure that they not only uses DirectX. But as AndyB points out. They probably use some kind of 3D engine where they can chose which 3D framework they want to use... as you can do in Ogre for example. Or they might even have their own 3D framework... even if I think that is quite unlikely.

My current system is really getting old now, definetely hope for better by the time this game goes live. Cant remember exact specs on all of it as it was built quite some time ago and the graphics card added last..

2500k
8 gb
Agility 3 ssd
Gtx 560

Pretty standard rig. If ED is limited to 32 per instance it will probably run fine on mobile gpus. Judging from the promo videos a lot of the tech will be shader 2 and graphical detail scaling will be very easy - textures, shadows and particles will all be toggleable no doubt.

machine specs now and in future

current PC specs will be upgraded for ED:

imac 27"
CPU : 3.2ghz i5
MEMORY : 12gb ddr3
GRAPHICS : 2gb top mac ATI card
DRIVES : 128gb M4 boot ssd (user upgraded - pain) + 1TB stock HD

Current Hack and Oc'ed 2nd PC
CPU i7 920 3.8ghz running stable at 3.8ghz NH-d14 cooler
MBOARD : gigabyte EX58-UD3R
DRIVES : 128gb M4 boot ssd + many drives
MEMORY: 4gb (needs tripling!)
GRAPHICS: 9800gtx+ 1gb (getting a 2gb GTX660)
PSU: ANTEC HCG 750w - solid PSU
CASE : Fractal Define R3 (a joy)

ED spec of PC by time of release
Will upgrade PC to a minimum 4.5ghz quad core something with higher transistor count or cores / more actual perfomance than haswell hopefully before ED release or try and source a 2500k running at 5ghz
2gb gtx660 or better graphics by the time ED releases.
and 16gb of ram by then.

I am looking at the Amd 8 core cpu. But the Cache on the Intel 6 core chips look good also. Graphics not sure. Note I need a high end cpu Because I Max it out on a few games I Play . Games like Star Ruler. Not a graphics intense game But CPU intense game it could bring any system to a slowdown running the cpu at 100%.

Small updates to mine...

SSD :D

GFX Geforce 460Ti dual 700mhz with 1gig 1ghz ddr5 ram, OC'd to 840mhz and 1200mhz :p
