Picked up my baby pilbara rock monitor today 😍
Ive been dreaming of keeping this species for years, and now its finally time!
And Raising him from such a young age (~2 months) will be especially fun, seeing him grow aswell as bonding with him, i just cant wait.
The third picture is what he will eventually look like.
Currently still thinking of a name. I thought of Waru which means fire in the aborininal language, but im open for Suggestions πŸ˜„

Yes!!! Was hoping to see a new Post here and then it's one about such a cool Animal. Please continue posting about it. I wonder how tame he will get, considering how intelligent Monitor Lizards are and that you are raising it from such a young Age

Thanks :). Yeah even tho i only had him for 2 days the intelligence is really noticable, especially since this is my first monitor. I mean reptiles in general are not stupid, but monitors are just on a different level. They way he looks at me, you can just tell there is something going on behind those eyes.
The other thing is the speed, holy crap is this guy fast. My geckos and skink can be quick when they want, but this little lizard is basicly flying.

As far as i know from the research ive done, pilbara rock monitors are usually a little more skittish but can become very tame, kinda also depends on the individual. Which is a little different to the really common pet monitors like ackies who are almost always rather friendly.
But honestly, if he never becomes puppy dog tame im fine with that, If i can take him out when i need to without getting bit im happy. Im not really handling my lizards all that much if any. So with a lizard this active and beautiful im more than happy to just watch him

πŸ€” which Species does that Abbreviation stand for?🦎
Also would love to See a Picture of the Terrarium πŸ˜ƒ
Ackie just stands for ackie monitors or varanus acanthurus. A roughly bearded dragon sized species that is the most common pet monitor, probably also the best choice for most people.

The terrarium really isnt anything to write home about, quite the opposite actually its kind of an eyesore πŸ˜‚. Just a temporary set up to get some size on him. Gonna build a big one with a custom background over the winter.

πŸ₯³ today I was able to finally properly handfeed my female Cockatiel again through the Cage Bars. Really hope she'll become tamer again. Also managed to get close enough to take some nice Pictures which she wouldnt've let me do before

Sorry, needed to cut the Pictures a lot because I took them in 64 MP and I'm currently still limited to using my Phone and don't know how I could make them smaller otherwise there. But you aren't really missing much. Want to build something really nice for them though once I'm able to move to a new Home which will hopefully be soon

What I also want to do once I can move and if I can get the Home I want, is to make a Mini Pond on the Balcony with Common Minnows😊🐟🐟🐟

Was also toying with the idea of getting a mini pond.
Do you know Serpa design on YouTube? He made some absolutely beautiful balcony ponds. Highly recommend him

Know his Channel. Didn't know though that he also did some Mini Ponds. Might take a Look later even though I already roughly know what I want it to look like

Also need more Space finally, not only because I have way too little Space myself but also because the Cage is too small (even though they don't really seem to mind) and because I also want to give them more exciting Stuff outside the Cage.
If you're playing with the Thought to get Parrots someday, I recommend to look up The Parrot Teacher on YouTube.
Pretty good Channel.
You should also know that Grassland Parrots like Cockatiels and Budgies are usually way less loud than the ones from Rainforests. Most Cockatoos are extremely loud though anyways.
Which Species would you like to get someday? For me it was just by Coincidence because I was asked if I can take them because the previous Owner couldn't keep them anymore.
You can also send me a private Message if you want to know more about keeping Birds. There are some extremely important Differences to keeping Mammals that you should definitely already know before

By the Way, what I just thought about again: what strange Habits do your Pets have?
My female Cockatiel can only enter the Cage by climbing over the left Side towards the Entrance and if something blocks her Way she won't try to find another Way and I'll need to help her by removing the ObstacleπŸ™ƒ

@Marvinb by the Way, how's it going with the Monitor Lizard?😊
I'd also like to keep a Reptile someday.
A Lizard would be cool but my absolute Dream Reptile that I really want to keep since a long Time already, would be a Fly River Turtle. But I guess you should have a own House first before getting one because the Tank needs to be so huge and it's probably barely possible to move a Tank of that Size to another Home.
Another Animal I would really love to have but which I would need to have a Garden for, would be Tasmanian Pademelons (weird Funfact about those: despite the Fact that some People keep those as Pets, there doesn't seems to be a single EAZA Zoo that keeps them)

Its doing fantastic, settling in quite nice and not shy at all.
Yeah fly river turtles are amazing. But not sure if i would recommend them as a starter reptile πŸ˜„.
Yeah the tank is gonna be probably custom build aswell, pretty hard to get those of the shelf.
Also the turtle itself, from what ive seen they are pretty rare and pretty expensive πŸ˜‚

Played with the Thought of getting something like a Green Anole as my first Reptile. But I would also absolutely love to get a Green Iguana but from what I've read, they don't really seem to be a good Starter Reptile.

Honestly? Green iguanas arent good pet reptiles at all πŸ˜„
They are huge, and most of them are not the friendliest fellas around to say the least. Pretty territorial once they mature.
Also super expensive to keep, like they need an gigantic enclosure which is pretty expensive to heat and light properly, and the amount of fresh veggies they eat can also add.
If youre really into the big iguanas, definetly chose a rhinoceros iguana. If youre fine with something smaller you might wanna take a look at fidji iguanas, although they are illegal to keep in a couple places, the Us for example

Didn't know you can keep those as PetsπŸ˜ƒ
Are they more peaceful than the Green Iguana? Maybe even relatively suitable for a Beginner?
Have a lot of Time though to decide anyways because first I need to see how my financial Situation will develop. Keeping Reptiles isn't the cheapest Thing in the World after all.

Might be possible to keep them were I live because in Germany (at least the Part of it where I live) there don't seem to be that many Species you can't keep. Would need to look into that if I should decide that I want to keep this Species

There are hundreds of reptile species that you can keep. There is more to tbe reptile hobby than bearded dragons and co πŸ˜„.
Might have to look a bit for the rarer stuff, but you can find most things with a little patience.

Yeah they are alot more chill for the most part.
Suitable for a beginner? Well depends, there isnt anything super difficult about them and from what ive seen they are pretty robust.
You just need alot of space and budget for them

Well depends. If you keep a gecko or smaller snake the running cost really arent to bad, a bit up front for the set up but after that is fine
It gets a little more pricy once you get to the stuff that needs a lot of heat and special lighting like bearded dragons, monitors and uromastyx for example.
Well and than you get to the really big stuff like giant Monitor and giant constrictors, like good luck buying a frozen piglet every couple weeks πŸ˜„

Im also german and germany is usually pretty good when it comes to exotic pets. Would be surprised if your actually restricted in what you can keep where u are

Thanks for the Informations. Probably extremely likely that my first Reptile will be some relatively small Lizard. I assume Species from Rainforests need less expensive Basking Lights than ones from Desserts and Savannas?
