Your Pets

What exactly do you use to make the backgrounds? And how? I'd love to be able to do that...
Its actually not that hard. I made the rough shapes from styrofoam and covered them in a layer of tile grout (tile glue? no idea how that stuff is called in english) so it gets a rough texture for the cement to stick to. Then i cover it with said cement and let it dry a bit. When the cement is like 50% hardend i bash it with a rock, piece of bark or similar to get a rocky texture and leave it to dry further. At about 90% you can use and old knife for example to draw and chip in the cracks and fissures. When its done curing you can paint it however you want

I had no idea a reptile could look so adorable. The terrarium also looks great!
Well then prepare yourself for this handsome devil

Today i finished setting up the new home for my knobtail geckos Currant and Apricote, and introduced the new inhabitants.
I made nicely integrated little wet/nestboxes for them to hide and dig in, aswell as for the female to lay their eggs in. Really hoping they settle in nicely :)

😍 so adorable.

If there wouldn't be already such a Overabundance of Cockatiels in Pet Shelters I would allow them to breed at least once and keep one or two of the Eggs. Another Cockatiel Keeper suggested not to do it for that Reason. Never had Offspring of any Pet so far. Maybe when I get my Mini Pond 🥰
You definitely need to show Pictures of the Babys when they've hatched🥰
Great Work on the Terrarium by the Way. It looks great

😃 ok, sounds like a pretty nice Method.
I think I couldn't get it to look that natural though

Yeah i know that feeling. Would like to get my leopard gecko a girlfriend, but there are so many leopard geckos out there that breeding them is kinda pointless and imo a little questionable since i doubt i would find a good home for all of the offspring.

🤔 does someone have Suggestions for Fish that fit into a Mini Pond on a Balcony?
If possible ones that can live outdoors for the whole Year (in Germany). Seems like it might be that a Swarm of Common Minnows needs way more Space than whatever was written on the Website where I originally looked the Information up.
If the Info regarding the Space that I saw a few Minutes ago, should be wrong, it would be great though because I was already really excited for the Minnows.
Can't tell yet how big the Mini Pond could be because I didn't move yet, but if someone knows a Fish that doesn't need much Space, I would be glad to read some Suggestions

Ive seen similar things done with guppys, although you would have to take them indoors over winter.
Bringing the thing in is probably something you have to do anyways, not sure any fish could overwinter in such a small container

From what I've read, it should be at least 1m deep for that, so I need to see if something suitable with that Height is available. Otherwise I'll definitely need to put the Fish into a Aquarium during Winter

Yeah i guess it depends on the size. I was imagining like a big "bucket" or similar which could freeze solid on very cold days

Wouldn't freeze solid. At least not during Winters that are like the last few.
The Place where I've helped with the Horses for some Time had those big black Plastic Containers (I think 60 or 90 l) for the Water for the Horses and there was always only thin Ice on Top of it. I'll most likely wait until Spring though anyways to put Fish into the Pond once I can start with it, so I can also test it first how thick the Ice would get in whatever I would use to create the Pond

🤔 Just had another Thought. Parts of New Zealand and Tasmania have a similar Climate. Maybe some Fish from there that would be suitable and are available in the Pet Trade?
🤔 even though now that I think about it not very likely due to Export Regulations but other Animals where also exported from there in the Past, so maybe there is something 😊

Yeah australia has put a ban on any export of their native wildlife (Its why most aussie reptile are so rare and pricy :( ) so you can only get what has been exportet before the ban

Yep. I believe something similar is happening with fire-bellied toads. I tried looking for some last November, and everybody told me that they aren't getting them anymore, which is how I ended up with this guy:

Bruce the Pacman Frog
I feed him 1 or 2 times a week. Nice, fatty mealworms, since they last longer and I can feed him less than normal crickets. I've had him for a little less than a year, maybe 10 months now? He's a surprisingly popular attraction here at the house, as everybody that comes wants to see him on action (meaning, they want me to feed him). Fortunately, since I feed him Saturday or Sunday, which is when people visit, I don't mess up his feeding schedule

Wow, He's gotten big. Pretty nice😊

Does someone know a Database with Space Requirements for Fish? For some Reason I can't find one that shows the Requirements and I don't want to search a Eternity for each Species that I want to look up
Edit: What? 2000l for Moderlieschen? That can't be right. You could keep a Arapaima in there

I'm confused. How can it be that there are so many Aquarium Fish that don't need that much Space but if you search for Outdoor Fish, all of them need at least 1000l according to the Information I found? There must be at least one small Coldwater Fish that is suitable

😃 found a Fish that might work for a Mini-Pond. Somehow I didn't think about Medaka and it also wasn't mentioned on any List I found. Need only 54-60l and it'll probably be a bit bigger anyways. Need to research the Breeds though because it seems like not all of them can be kept outside for the whole Year

Might also want to consider native fish. I think that would also be pretty cool
Im thinking of sticklebacks and european minnows

That's exactly what I wanted at first but unless they are talking Trash on this Site, it won't work.
First Choice was the Common Minnow, second Choice would've been the Moderlieschen

Hmm seems weird that such small fish would require that much space. But i dont really know anything about what goes into making ponds so im not really qualified to comment on that tbh :D

I was also absolutely confused because I'm pretty sure that some other Website mentioned way smaller Requirements for the Common Minnow. For some Reason it is way too hard to find Space Requirements for Fish. But I'm happy that it should definitely work with the Medaka. Just need to properly isolate the Pond from the Cold and should also get some kind of Lid for it that lets Light through. Keeping Medaka outside during Winter with proper Isolation seems to be the best Way to do it anyways because they can easily die if the Temperature changes too quickly
