Your Top 10 Animals of 2024!!!

As 2024 comes to an end, let's reflect on the year and boy...this was the most year...

I kid, but 2024 for Planet Zoo has certainly been an eventful one.
From the long awaited release to console - which has sparked renewed interest in the game, just check out Reddit and YouTube for proof of that, to the feelings of impending doom as both packs were expected to be the last, the absolutely shocking news that support will indeed continue till at least next year, the heartbreaking loss of the community team, social media unevenness, the rise of Frontier Unlocked, the release of Planet Coaster 2, it's been a lot.

But let's focus to why we're here in the first place, the animals! What were your Top 10 of the year and why? Overall thoughts of the two packs? Any stand-outs? Hopes for 2025 - look, I'm American, I can't exactly say I'm looking forward to next year at all, but a DLC could help...

And now let's get to it!

10. Alpine Goat - Not my top choice of breed, but a goat of any sort is probably the most essential petting zoo animal. Love the walk, the look, the sound design, a very solid job! My one gripe is that I really wish the color morphs weren't just restricted to melanistic, piebald, leucistic, etc. and were more naturally occurring like with the red fox, lar gibbon, and so more picks higher on here.

9. Pallas' Cat - I had absolute apathy towards to this fuzzball for years, but they have completely won me over. Despite Frontier's famous feline fever, I did feel the Pallas cat is worthy if not necessary addition. I just think they're neat!

8. Hill Radnor Sheep - Continuing Barnyard's infamous pattern of obscure breed choices, the sheep is another odd one, but tbh it doesn't matter all to me. When I think of a sheep, this what I think of. It's a sheep. And it's a really, really good one. Much has been said about the dip in quality of model work this year, but the sheep is absolutely an exception. It looks, sounds, and moves great. A very, very strong animal.

7. Alpaca - The alpaca represents a lot to me of why the Barnyard Pack works overall. Yes, we got SIX ungulates in one pack. But to me, there's a fundamental difference of the most iconic, recognizable animals on the planet - literally animals babies learn about - than say, the 14th African antelope. The Barnyard animals are iconic enough from popular culture alone to earn their place in the game imo. And the alpaca absolutely fills that criteria. Not to mention, FINALLY some South American representation. And where the goat fell short of the naturally occurring color morphs, the alpaca works it to the nines. Excellent execution on the fur as well.

6. American Standard Donkey - I have a lot of bias here because donkeys are my favorite farm mammals (they make WAFFLES!) and I know there are issues with the donkey - despite the patch, some of the morphs still don't have the cross on the back (can't believe they didn't properly fix it), and of course the sound, although I do feel like I have heard them heehawing in game? They absolute do when they fight and in the launch trailer. Has anyone else heard them hee haw at all while playing? Genuinely asking here.
But I can't help it, I love donkeys. And I was pretty devastated when the Somali wild ass was added because I assumed they had no shot of getting in. So happy to be wrong. And another hot topic, I think donkeys are a better pick than horses for a petting zoo. Gonna lose some folks with this one, but I stand by it. Now get me some parfait!

5. Spectacled Bear - I've mentioned it before here, but I voiced and puppeteered Paddington in the US tour of his play in 2022 to 2023, so of course I'm happy to be IN the game! A great model, a Zoo Tycoon legacy addition, again - FINALLY South America, an extremely welcomed addition to the game. Not to much to say. Who doesn't love bears?

4. Coquerel's Sifaka - I'm just gonna say it: I think this is the most overly criticized animal of the year. I'm a tour guide at the Bronx Zoo and we are one of the few facilities that houses them. Yes, the climbing pattern is wrong. But for me, their terrestrial, hopping locomotion is by far their most iconic feature, and so long as that was done right, I consider it a success. And despite the initial concerns, Frontier delivered there. And at least for me, when climbing, they are constantly jumping from branch to branch, platform to platform, as they do in real life - much more than any other climbing animal in-game.
I also think the lack of a South American monkey really caused an uproar against the guys which I don't think is fair. Not to mention, look, support is going till next year, I would be DUMBFOUNDED if we don't get at least one LATAM monkey next year.
I know I'm biased especially since they were in my original Top 25 wishlist all the way back in 2021, but I'm just very, very happy to have them in the game.

3. Markhor - My most desired ungulate since getting into the game three years ago. Another Bronx staple, one of the true last remaining Zoo Tycoon OG legacy animals (in both 1 and 2!!!), thought the takin swiped their spot last year, I NEEDED THEM. And they're great! Can't describe the feeling I got when I first saw them climb up the mountain enrichment. Something I never thought I'd see 🥹🥹

2. African Spurred Tortoise - THIS is what I'm talking about! Leaps and bounds the best looking animal of the year. It's on par with the likes of the armadillo and porcupine in terms of flawless execution and photorealism. I love their breathing sounds too, reminds me of Tony Soprano OH! A very long overdue addition to habitat reptiles. I will say though they might too good... as the sulcata here demonstrates how CRITICAL the Aldabra and Galapagos need to be upscaled. Like good grief, that resize is needed asap

1. Sussex Chicken - Sorry for being so predictable, the bird guy likes birds, what? But as heartbroken as I am my beloved ducks have yet to join the flock, I just love these chickens. They're honestly not far from the tortoise as the best looking animals of the year for me.
Actually it's a bit more than that...it's embarrassing to admit, the chicken is my favorite animal in the game.
That's not a joke, that's not a bit, not recency bias. I just love them so much. I have spent HOURS watching them strut, peck, crow, and a doodle doo.
And once they silently added red rooster color morph? FORGET IT. It was over.
All I could ever ask is we get a few more morphs - gold, solid brown, bright red, but even as is - they're still incredible.

What about YOU??

10. Highland Cow. The most adorable of cattle.
9. Baboon. It was a long time coming and I'm glad Frontier went with the one found in Asia a bit too.
8. American Standard Donkey. I'm glad we have donkeys in game. And I think this is one of the better models of 2024. Even if it sounds wrong its pretty to look at.
7. Markhor. Majestic, good to have an alternative to the Takin for hoofstock of the region!
6. Sussex Chicken. An icon of the farm!
5. Alpaca. I like the fact that we have a smaller fluffier relative of the Llama.
4. African Leopard. I know its controversial but I longed for a typical Tropical Leopard as opposed to the fluffy Amur.
3. Kirk's Dik Dik. A cute little oddball! I love them!
2. Pallas' Cat. One of the most unique, majestic wild cats. I'm glad to have it and the Sand Cat because they are similar yet from different climates. I also enjoy the fact that the Pallas' has a color variant!
1. Hill Radnor Sheep. I didn't expect domestic sheep to make it because I thought goats would take the spot. I love sheep because they are beautiful, playful, and because of my favorite Bible Verse John 10:27-28. So, at the end of the day, I am grateful barnyard was an animal pack!

10. Coquerel's Sifaka
9. Markhor
8. Spectacled Bear
7. Hamadryas Baboon
6. Tamworth Pig
5. African Leopard
4. Hill Radnor Sheep
3. Sussex Chicken
2. Highland Cattle
1. African Spurred Tortoise

10. Coquerel’s Sifaka - I haven’t actually used these guys in game yet, so it isn’t my place to judge on their flaws. If I had used them and liked them, they’d probably be ranked at #6 or #7. It was nice to get more than one primate in a pack and these guys were a solid enough oddball that I’ve loved seeing a few times IRL.

9. Hill Radnor Sheep - Far from the greatest pick ever both in breed and species - especially in a pack with another caprine and five other ungulates - but it’s got a great model and unlike some of the other breed choices, I’m relatively okay with the obscurity here since it looks enough like the generic sheep found in zoos.

8. Highland Cow - Cute, iconic, and not overly rare overseas. it’s got a fair share of issues in execution but it’s a decent pick as a breed. I don’t have much to say about it, it’s just kinda okay.

7. Alpaca - It’s pretty much just a better llama to me. It’s a nice animal and is ridiculously common worldwide. As much as I love it though it doesn’t fill any niche that the llama didn’t already and thus would have been far from my first pick for a farm pack. This was one of the few domestic animal niches already filled in game and they decided to retread it instead of giving us something truly new?

6. American Standard Donkey - I’ve only played with them once so far but it’s a nice change of pace from how British the Barnyard pack is (and it’s a breed choice that’s actually common in zoos, and worldwide no less). The sound issue sucks but it doesn’t completely ruin the animal for me like it does for some others.

Honestly, there’s a bit of a gap between these last five and everything else. Maybe I’ve just grown more cynical, but this year’s packs just weren’t for me I guess. Regardless I’m just happy to be getting any new animals after all this time.

5. Spectacled Bear - While I can completely understand why others might be upset at our 8th bear, I’m just happy to have another member in the often avoided void that is non-tropical South America. Probably the best looking of the game’s bears, and a personal favorite species of mine. This goober has grown on me a lot.

4. Kirks Dik-Dik - I’ve said many times before that a tiny ungulate was one of the few niches left for the group I could get excited over, and I’m glad it’s finally got a representative! While it’s probably my least favorite of the options over a muntjac or pudu, it’s still a great animal to have and it looks wonderful. After this, an Indian antelope and maybe still a muntjac would make non-domestic ungulates complete for me.

3. African Spurred Tortoise - This is one of only two non-mammals this year (yikes…), but at least it was a solid enough choice. It's our first mainland tortoise, with loads of mixed species potential, and by far the best model of the year (and maybe among the best in the game). I wish Frontier did more habitat reptiles because they always look incredible.

2. Hamadryas Baboon - THE MONKEY CURSE IS BROKEN! REJOICE! Seriously though, I adore these guys. It is so nice to have a more unique animal to build rocky exhibits for outside of the usual carnivorans and caprines. Sure, the model isn’t perfect, but I don’t even care that much, I’m just happy to have a damn baboon finally. It wasn’t an animal I was super excited for initially, but now that it’s here it’s one of my favorites in the entire game. Oh, and did I mention it’s a monkey?

1. Sussex Chicken - Such a staple animal in farm areas and finally another galliforme (though it’s still ridiculous we never got another wild one after the peafowl when they’re such basic zoo animals). They have super cute animations and are some of my favorite animals to build for with their cute little coops. Admittedly, it was probably the only animal in Barnyard I didn’t have issues with, and it was the only bird of the entire year somehow, so its high placement would’ve been inevitable, but even if that wasn’t the case it still would’ve been pretty high up for me. I love chickens IRL and while it’s not quite my favorite ever in a game with kiwi, elephants, seals, and maned wolves, it undoubtedly cracks the top 10 overall for me. Now if only it had a brown color morph.

Oh boy... I guess with the options avaible is just the Zookeeper's animal pack plus the african leopard, chicken and alpaca and that's it lol

If i have put them in some order of priority then i guess it would something like this

1. Kirk's dik-dik
2. Sussex chicken
3. Spectacled bear
4. Alpaca
5. Palla's cat
6. Hill radnor's sheep
7. Sifaka
8. Markhor
9. African spurred tortoise
10. African leopard

10. Highland Cattle - One of the few domestic animals that I actually had on my wishlist. I am glad to have them in game, as they are much more interesting than a generic cow.

9. Alpine Goat - not a breed I would choose for a goat, but it looks generic enough. Goats are probably the most common species in petting zoos, so they are incredibly useful for the game.

8. Coquerel's Sifaka - Some minus points for the regular lemur climbing animations, but otherwise the animal itself is very interesting.

7. Markhor - It is great that Asia got a typical wild goat and these guys are great representatives.

6. Hill Radnor Sheep - it is generic looking typical sheep and that is enough for me. The model is amazing, I want to hug the warm wool everytime I see them. 😂

5. Alpaca - I am surprised how much I like these, because we already had the Llama, but these Alpacas have cozy looking wool and I love to mix them with the sheeps as a guardians against predators. I used that concept more than once in my zoos, so that is why the high ranking.

4. Hamadryas Baboon - a new monkey was a long overdue, and this one being specialized for rocky environments makes building for them really unique.

3. Kirk’s Dik-Dik - i would have preffered muntjac for a small ungulate, but I cannot be mad at them, they are adorable and a great filler yet unique species for African sections.

2. African Spurred Tortoise - this is such a zoo stample for me, the most common big tortoise in zoos around me. I wanted them for a long time, so happy to see them and the model is top notch.

1. Spectacled Bear - Just another bear for alot of people, but I love them. South America finally got its only bear. The model is also great.

10. Pallas's cat
9. Markhor
8. Alpine goat
7. American standard donkey
6. Hamadryas baboon
5. Hill Radnor sheep
4. Alpaca
3. Sussex chicken
2. Spectacled bear
1. African spurred tortoise

  1. Spectacled Bear: I really want more South American animals in the game. I like this bear.
  2. Pallas's Cat: They are adorable! Now I just want the serval and ocelot for my cat collection.
  3. Markhor: I'm glad my favorite goat was finally added. The fur looks nice.
  4. African Spurred Tortoise: It's beautiful, and I've been waiting for a new tortoise.
  5. Alpine Goat: Domestic goats are a basic petting zoo animal.
  6. American Standard Donkey: I wish the noises were a bit more accurate, but I love the model and color morphs. I see them in zoos often.
  7. Hamadryas Baboon: Finally! This is one of the last things I need from Africa.
  8. Highland Cow: I love the animal and color morphs. It would be top 3 if the model was bigger.
  9. Sussex Chicken: They did a nice job with the chicken though I would have preferred a gold or reddish brown one.
  10. Coqueral's Sifaka: I wholeheartedly agree that this model gets too much criticism. The ground animations look nice and were honestly more than I expected. I don't understand why people were expecting the jumping. It doesn't seem feasible with the current mechanics. My biggest issue is that it should have been a New World monkey, but it's not terrible. Hopefully, we'll see some in 2025.

Just gonna do a top 5, because i really dont know how to rank the rest. Super weird one because we only got two packs, and anything else than my top 4 im kinda just luke warm on at best.

5. Alpaca: Kinda surprised its this high, but the model is amazing
4. Dik-dik: despite being pretty burned out on hoofstock, this one is very distinct from everything else and therefore goes here
3. Chicken: Bird.
2. Tortoise: wasnt really high on my wishlist but damn this thing looks amazing.
1. Baboon: waited for a new monkey for literally 4 years. Glad we finally got another one and this is by leaps and bounds my favorite animal of the year. Hopefully we dont have to wait the same time again to get another monke.

Neither of the packs really appealed to me all that much, and we're left with a total of 15 animals for the year.

The very clear Winner:

1. Spectacled Bear - most wanted specific mammal since we got the Wolverine (the New World Monkey situation is more dire, but deciding on a specific species, none of the choices outweighed the Spectacled Bear specifically.

2. Markhor
3. Sussex Chicken (things are definitely in the less exciting stage here, but it's bird, soooo)
4. HIghland Cattle
5. Alpine Goat
6. Hamadryas Baboon just so now all primate attention can be focused on New World primates.
7. Pallas Cat
8. Alpaca, I guess. Things definitely start getting into the "meh" category here.
9. African Spurred Tortoise
10. American Standard Donkey - a fourth equid is good, and seems like enough for me, though I'd rather it have been the Shetland Pony.

Oh...for fun and completion's sake. and these take a dramatic nosedive.

11. African Leopard - it was free and still I can't rate it higher than this.
12. The Hill Radnor Sheep - at least it's not an antelope.
13. Dik - Dik - ya'll have heard me go on enough about not needing more African Antelopes for several years now...so...
14. Sifaka - should've been a New World Primate. I know I shouldn't just hold that over its head, but I do.
15. The whatever Pig - absolutely unnecessary. 5 pig-type animals we got, with 3 from last year, filled the pig-related roster perfectly. There was no need for this walking bacon sandwich. I still haven't used it and probably never will.

I dont think that anyone really has a problem with the model, or the animations that are there as that all looks great. Its really just whats not there that gets critizied (and very rightfully so imo).

I think choosing top 10 out of 15 new animals in total is maybe a bit much. I prefer to do top 5 instead. 🙂

5. Donkey - would be higher if not for the sounds, I just love all equids
4. Alpaca - cute, so fluffy, I can't help but love them
3. Spectacled Bear - the cutest bear
2. Pallas Cat - tiny grumpy cat 😺
1. African Spurred tortoise - perfectly made model, so realistic, such an improvement over the base game tortoises. They look great and use barrows. I enjoy them a lot 😊

Honorable mention: Markhor, they are lovely 🩵

We only got two packs, one very good pack, and one I didn’t even wanted to buy as it only makes me crave for hamburgers and chicken nuggets. The free gift I wished I could skip, worst gift ever.

Markhor, Spectacled Bear, Pallas Cat, Dik-Dik and the Sifaka are all amazing.

Tortoise, Chicken and Baboon are okish

The rest? Delete forever, especially the donkey, goat, pig and leopard, ugh

Ok so here is my list
  1. Sulcata Tortoise: it was hard but this guy just looks so good and is incredibly useful, how could I not rate it higher, easily one of my favorite animals in the game
  2. Hamadryas Baboon: would have been first but it's fur is a bit stiff, with that said it looks so good and it broke the monkey curse, it is also extremely useful.
  3. Andean Bear: very useful, cute, and unique, so glad to get it.
  4. Kirk's Dik-Dik: very cute and useful filler animal, I mean how could you not love it.
  5. Sussex Chicken: the only bird we got this year and is very welcomed, should have got a Guinea Fowl or duck but this is nice.
  6. Markhor: the face is a bit funky but it's fur looks great and it is a very cool goat
  7. Hill Randor Sheep: should've been the Jacob's Sheep but it still looks absolutely great, and is good for a filler species
  8. Alpine Goat: would be higher if it was a African Pygmy Goat or Nigerian Pygmy Goat like god intended but it's a very useful and well made animal as it is
  9. Sifaka: I hate to put it so low but it's just to immersion breaking, if it actually acted like a Sifaka in the trees it could ha effectively made the top 3 but it's ground animations look great and the model is alright so it ranks here even though I can't comfortably use it
  10. Pallas Cat: while the model isn't great it could be worse, and even though it's missing a iconic animation I still like it, but it does makes me love the sand cat more

I also just want to do a top 5

1. Coquerel's sifaka
2. Pallas's cat
3. Hamadryas baboon
4. African spurred tortoise
5. Sussex chicken

So we all agree that the pig was a waste of a slot in the roster. Good.
I wouldn't call it a waste per se as domestic pigs are very essential for such a pack imo, but the choice of breed was weird and a guinea pig, rabbit or duck would have given us something more different and special. Maybe the pig would get more positive feedback if it was a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig or a mini pig?

1. Coquerel's Sifaka
2. Hamadryas Baboon
3. African Spurred Tortoise
4. American Black Bear ripoff
5. Sussex Chicken
6. Markhor
7. Kirk's Dik Dik
8. Pallas Cat
9. Alpaca
10. American Standard Donkey
