Your zoo visits

Ok y'all, here we go. It's gonna be in sections.

First, the sea lions...

When you walk into the zoo, they're the 1st you see:

There is a seating area, maybe for shows or keeper talks? But I don't know.

When you go inside, you meet the Galapagos tortoises:

One of them was actually swimming/floating in the water (Frontier, please add this). There was also a bunny just relaxing in the enclosure without a care in the world🤣

P.s. ignore the tortoise poo😅🤣

After the tortoises, you walk inside to the interior part of the sea lions:

It's a really cool walkthrough tunnel to see the underwater sections of the sea lions. We have some photos of the whole tunnel, but I won't post because it has some people's faces in it, so...

After the sea lions, you go to the super cool aquarium:

Next up, the crown jewels: Humboldt penguins, representing the Galapagos penguins. Not too many pics because of the crowds, but it was cool to see the keepers feeding them...

Some of them (penguins) were tossing fish in the water for the others that were swimming...

Oh, and before I forget, in between the tortoises and the interior sea lion tunnel were the iguanas:

The blue Cayman iguana represents the Galapagos species

Had there been less people, I could've gotten more and better pics, but oh well. At least I could show y'all, and I hope y'all liked this virtual, kinda lame, tour

Must say, both the sea lion coastal setting and tortoise exhibit look very naturalistic and very close to what you actually see in Galapagos. Well done Houston zoo!

I really want to. Visited when I was a teen and they were innovating the african area. One of the best zoos I've been.

Only problrem was it was extremely hot
Yes, that's the problem with Texas. It's Australian outback in spring, Sahara in summer, African savannah in fall, and winter doesn't exist

And, was your visit before or after the gorillas and RRHs were added?

Just in time to see the gorillas. I was really amazed by the gorilla habitat. As far as I remember there were no RRHs there.

Yeah, they tend to hide in the little cave/opening. They don't do much, though.

Next year the new and improved bird area, behind the South America Pantanal savannah aviary, will open. Not entirely sure what's gonna be there (birds, duh, but I mean species)

Visited zoo Zlín today and got to see some cool animals including Kiwis and Giant Otters, here are some pictures:

Humboldt Penguin enclosure. It was quite cold in the morning so they were all just sunbathing.
IMG_5392.jpeg

Ground Hornbill, really entertaining birds. They were very active, playing with each other and trying to steal grass reed from each other. There were 2 adults and I assume 2 of their offspring.
IMG_5407.jpeg

Shared enclosure with Rock Hyrax, African Spurred Tortoise and Vulturine Guineafowl, they also had a nice outdoor section.

IMG_5419.jpeg

Malayan Tapir indoor section.
IMG_5455.jpeg

Japanese Garden section. Really beautiful and relaxing place, they also had cranes, but there were so many people that I do not have any good pictures.

And finally the Kiwi. Was lucky it was awake!

Will continue in next post.

Start of the Central and South American section, with some theming:

IMG_5522.jpeg

Southern Tamandua enclosure, I wish we would have these in PZ!
IMG_5517.jpeg

Walk-through Macaw enclosure:
IMG_5529.jpeg

Jaguar Enclosure, very beautiful. It is their latest renovated enclosure, also with some underwater view if the cats feel like swimming (unfortunately both of them were sleeping):

SA tapirs.
IMG_5545.jpeg

Aviary with Spoonbills and Ibises.
IMG_5548.jpeg

And Giant Otters enclosure, unfortunately cannot post a video, but they were very playful (and loud!)

Isn't a great part of the tortoise habitat too steep for them to walk?? At least it looked to me like they can only use about 50% of the grassy area. Typical traversable area problems in Planet Zoo!

Woah, you really lucky!! 😲🙌 An awake kiwi and in day light! I've been in Berlin Zoo twice and I could never see them because the light in their aviary is almost zero, like a night with no moon, darker than any night house I have ever been.
